Century Regional Detention Facility (CRDF) is located in the City of Lynwood just off the 105 Freeway on Alameda Street. It was designed and constructed as the first "Direct Supervision" jail in Los Angeles County. It was initially opened in 1994 as an all-male facility, housing approximately 1,500 medium to high level inmates. For many years, it also housed Special Program inmates, including, a veteran's dorm, a narcotics offender program and a domestic violence program.
In Fiscal Year 2002/2003 the facility was closed due to budget constraints county-wide. As the budget situation gradually improved, the facility was re-opened in March of 2006, housing female inmates that were transferred from the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.
CRDF is primarily a maximum security facility, and is the primary location for all female inmates in all of Los Angeles County. CRDF houses approximately 2300 inmates. CRDF is unique to its design, personnel, and functions by being the only facility with its own Inmate Reception Center and Release Center. Inmates serving time at CRDF can go through an entire incarceration process from pre-arraignment to release while being housed at the facility. In addition, CRDF is also the only jail facility which provides a full Booking center for male prisoners arrested by Century Sheriff's Station, Compton Sheriff Station, Transit Services Bureau, CHP and other municipal agencies. The facility has its own fully operational medical facilities and staff as well as its own mental health department.
The personnel use a "Direct Supervision" approach to obtain acceptable inmate behavior, while at the same time requiring strict compliance with facility rules and regulations. The direct supervision concept is simple. It requires the deputies to walk among the inmates and stay in direct contact with them at all times. This system allows the inmates to feel more at ease. At the same time, provides a safer and more easily manageable environment for the facility personnel.
