The maximum length of a rolling stock determines its turning radius. For example, trams, have short length vehicles connected to each other to make them negotiate tight turns. The longer coaches of local and express trains cannot negotiate tight turns within the city, which is why mainline curves are of much higher radius of curvature. Metro trains therefore use standard gauge which can negotiate tighter curves compared to broad gauge coaches because there is a space constraint for metro lines since they run within the city and may have to take tighter curve.
