I saw this and I was like, "didn’t you already do two cerebus videos?" And then I realized it was the first 25 issues. This is such a good video, it makes me want to read Cerebus. Up to a certain point.

Congrats on your target sharp take of the early issues of Cerebus. I was an early fan and promoter of Dave's work back when the first 25 issue were new. Your ability to inform and entertain has only gotten better over the "gulp" years you've doing this. Who knew it would last this long. Thankfully, it has and we are all the richer for it. Stay strong, don't falter. Everything your doing is right.

Every new Cerebus essay you drop is a gift, man. You're the most eloquent person talking about comics on youtube and that will be recognized in due time. Got back into Cerebus after watching your first video and made it all the way up to Going Home before needing a break to maintain my sanity. I believe it is mostly a beautiful comic even if Dave has an ugly mind. You're the best as far as discussing its craftsmanship and not just the problematic stuff.

Your original Cerebus video introduced me to the series and it is now my favorite comic. One interesting detail in these early issues is Cerebus’s own celibacy/disinterest in women. The punch line of both Red Sophia and Jaka is cerebus’s own disinterest in them. This joke seems to be subverting the the expectation that a hero be a womanizer or have a love interest. By the time you get to Jaka’s reappearance in High society Cerebus has begun having feelings for her again and by his marriage to red Sophia Cerebus’s sexual proclivities become a running gag (Sophia yelling his fetishes from the roof tops, Cerebus’s hermaphroditism, his implied homosexual urges in minds and guys, and even down to his inability to stop chasing women in the latter days damning him.)
@lucassiccardi8764
@lucassiccardi8764 2 года назад
I think you're absolutely right in pointing that out. Cerebus' lack of interest in women gives to these early issues the flavour of infancy on another level still. Looking back to the beginnings with the knowledge of what's to come (as when Cerebus remembers or dreams of his younger self later in the series) is heartbreaking. Politics apart, one thing's for sure: Dave Sim, behind all his flaunted cynicism, was deeply romantic (and maybe still is).

Great video. Hope you will continue with these deep dives further into the series. High Society to Jaka’s Story is arguably the greatest run in monthly comic books!! And alongside that is Sim’s leading role in the self publishing phenomenon and creator’s rights. An all-round interesting time in the history of comic books.

Tentatively, I'd like to do High Society and Church & State, which is when the series organically develops into a critical darling. Then Jaka's Story cements that reputation. High Society is probably a future addition but I have to set aside time to re-read it and make notes.

I read Cerebus when I was still learning English, so I skipped any non-dialogue text. Because of this, I was able to read Cerebus just as a comic book, taking all the innovative narrative techniques, twist and turns of the plot at face value. For me, the comic was about how power can corrupt and pervert anyone (both men and women). I later found out about Dave Sim and all that jazz - do you think we can overlook Sim's views and focus on the narrative techniques of Cerebus or is that impossible? Also, where is the Jim Starlin Warlock video? Did you remove it? Great content as always,

As usual, I don’t want that ten minutes to be up! I forget where exactly, but later in the series Sim would revisit parodies such as the Roach, Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger & Keith Richards, even a John Lovits SNL character wasn’t safe. There was at least one scene that seemed to come directly from a Chuck Jones cartoon as well. Would love to see your take on other similar titles of this period. There was not only an explosion of more graphic books, but more black and white experimental books than ever before. Top suggestion would have to be the Puma Blues. Love and Rockets a close second. That is, if you feel like it. Kinda sorta maybe.Or whatever. It’s tough enough belonging to a club that would have me as a member…

I feel that this is an interesting look at the the series as it was before the controversies. Also maybe we should have something to talk about with Cerebus beyond Sim's misogyny. It's good to bring up the offensive views in art, but it gets repetitive after a while that all we can talk about is it's offensive elements. Sim's misogyny has been brought up countless times. Bringing up other elements of the series or what it was before it became Sim's vehicle for his views is a change.

I have lots of questions that I hope you can answer in future videos. I reread these books constantly. Why did Jaka jump in front of Cerebus on the gangplank? I couldn't find any clue or law that the Cirinists would have arrested him on a technicality if he walked in front of her or if they could interpret her being on the boat distracted by autographs as her seperating himself from him due to abuse. That's what I'm assuming they were trying to do, but I flip through all the conversations with them on the boat and his talks with F. Stop Kennedy about where they will disembark, but can't find a concrete line to confirm why they assembled an army there. Maybe my digital copy is missing a page. It's missing pages here and there. Was Artemis really Cirin's (Serna) son? Some of the weird metaphysical revelations declare him a manifestation of an aspect of Cerebus, but I don't think his aardvarkian nature could conflict with another's bloodline and warp that reality.

Sorry to hear you are unemployed. I hope matters improve for you in the very near future. As for me, the slowdown in productivity has been for a few factors. The most notable is I had to get a full time, day job. Obviously, that eats into a lot of the time I have to produce videos. Secondly, my computer is a decade old and it's been having a fair amount of issues recently. When I edit videos it randomly crashes and, well, this is a rather frustrating part of the process. In fact, I had to render this video four times before it was free from glitches. I assure you my dedication and interest have not waned whatsoever. More is definitely forthcoming.

For me, this is a fascinating topic. Obviously...I've done three videos about the series at this point. I like to think that I can separate art from the artist. To me, the greater sin is the back third of the series when it becomes self indulgent, meandering and nonsensical. Characters lose their character and become mouthpieces for an argument he lost years ago but refuses to concede. I’d have been content with more adventures unentangled from his world view. But that could just be my “feminine void” talking.

there's a strange duality in the morals of media consumption. on the one hand people say if you don't like the new interpretation,reboot, sequel or next chapter of something you loved that the new thing isn't something to be mad about and that its fine to have everything out there. at the same time others will see a section of work that's problematic, offensive or just plain disgusting and say that it's not ok to enjoy the previous parts of that work. sooo which is it? is there a sliding scale?

Except no, in the context of the period, they wouldn't. Men being men and having male clout and energy and time to invest in a dumb comicbook war would absolutely have banded together in a nerd horde to shout Sim down and put a stop to any hypothetical misandry before he got a full phonebook of polemic on the shelves. Women, especially in the comics industry at the time (1980s-90s), were not afforded the space and cultural power to decry what Sim chose to publish, so the small contingent who were aware of it were expected to "shut up and take it, bitch"...like almost everything else in society then and now. What you're perceiving as a sudden 'female dominance' in our contemporaneous times is a hegemonic smokescreen set up by megacorps, meant to trick women into a false sense of security and emotionally-manipulate men into hating women to the detriment of all---divide and conquer to control, the oldest trick in the book (and one Cerebus himself would surely appreciate)....just so you know.

@@pendafen7405 I appreciate your perspective I really do but I meant that nowadays in retrospect he would be celebrated by the woke press as a stunning and brave pioneer of the movement. Trust me that’s exactly how it would be and thus exposing the general hypocrisy. Anyway I see your point too. Thanks 🙏

Oh hey, the one part of this ultimately dreadful series that was actually fun to read.
