Best version I've found. Many versions seem to show an inappropriate urge to rush through the piece as fast as possible - but this tempo allows Siepi to show off in the most Don Giovanni way 👌

Most of the renditions of this aria sound like what it is: a very difficult piece to sing, but Siepi makes it sound like it's easy... Amazing performance.

He's got it! He's having fun! If you don't seem to be having fun as you sing this, you're not a great Don Giovanni. Interesting voice. He sounds less like a regular baritone than like a bass with excellent range.

Ken Howes He was an Italian bass, his name is Cesare Siepi, he was born in Milan in 1923 and died in Atlanta on 5th of July of 2010, he spent almost all his life in the US, in fact, he married a Metropolitan Ballerina Louellen Sibley in 1962, with whom he had two children, Luisa and Marco. Hope it helps you to know better my favorite singer...

+Ken Howes absolutely true, the singing has to be fun and natural, it would be soooooo hard to sing it, so it really takes a Great opera singer.

Ken Howes He was an extremely celebrated bass-baritone, who identified & was identified w this role in particular. In my opinion, there was perhaps only Ezio Pinza to rival him in the least.

You can’t beat him, simply the best. Nowadays at the Met it’s like voice is second fiddle to personality. Makes me think I’m at a college production .

Furtwängler chose a slow tempo for the whole opera and this helps here a lot. Very often you listen to singers who have to sing the aria in about 1:20 minutes or so.

Sencillamente genial. Otros compiten por cantarla más rápido, como si fuera un concurso de carreras, pero Siepi con su prodigiosa voz lo hacía a un tempo perfecto, con gran dominio y expresividad.. que pena que ya no esté entre nosotros.

Huh? So how come he packed Bassi. Bassi sang the main roles in most of the Mozart operas, including the Marriage of Figaro and the Magic Flute. Mozart changed the music for him, and the role of Don Giovanni was written for him. Would Mozart have written a role specially for Siepi?

It was easy for him because he had low larynx all the time.. it's so much easier to sing when you larynx don't move up. He just had one free feeling when he sung. He was not doing the colors of voice artificially with high larynx like Rodney Gilfry for example.

Difficult to get used to hearing this done at a speed of crotchet = 208. No wonder he finds it easy ambling along at this speed. Mozart does ask for presto and by the end this performance is closer to andante. Most singers these days go for around 264 and this is my preferred speed. It's not all to do with older vs current performance practice though. Ezio Pinza did it at 280!
