I once (foolishly) made the statement, "If a 150/152 is all I can fly, I'd rather not fly." That glaring bit of ignorance came from the thought that I knew how to fly it. I assumed that if I hadn't crashed it, I knew how to fly. LOL Years later and a handfull of CFI ratings had me spending a good deal of time in the airplane. I came to appreciate what a great little airplane it is.

I did crash a152 in 1987 in uptown indianapolis. Scary, but I successfully landed in a tree then it(and I) fell to the ground.

I made the mistake ofsaying that anything under 100 horsepower wasn't worth flying. The owner of an 8-A Silvaire heard me say that. After a loop, several rolls, and a couple of spins, I was cured of my prejudice. It had 85hp. A 160 hp Texas Taildragger will 'learn ya' sumpin' as well. I'll take a 65hp Champ or Cub over a 150/152 just because of legroom in back while teaching. Still, I can cram myself into the mini Skyhawk... and love it.

150's/152's will always hold a special place in my heart. 36yrs ago we did full stalls and spins in them. 300 mile X-countries were required with no gps, Foreflight or Garmin pilot and the lil plane did it. Slips, crabs and dirtying up the plane for landings...it took it. You don't get into a 150/152, you put it on. Best DAMN trainers ever!!!

As a long time CFI whose instructed in numerous SEL and MEL airplanes I can unequivocally state that the Cessna 150/152 series of airplanes are THE BEST civilian training airplanes ever produced. Predictable yet with enough traits to ensure the plot trainee can experience and learn how to handle “unique” flight characteristics that can, and DO, bite the pilot. Outstanding bird. Wish they were in the LSA category.

I remember being in high school and wishing I could afford to fly. Every now and then we would pass by the small airport about an hour away from our house. I made money in my summer job, but the distance and cost to do something that was pretty much entertainment (at the time I would've had to go into a lot of debt to get my licenses to fly commercially and the area didn't have much demand for instructors) it wasn't practical. It would've been a dream to be able to have the opportunity she was born into.

The 150/152 is not just for training. It is good for aerial work, especially when you need to just be in the air somewhere, particularly if you are looking at the ground a lot. We owned one that had been used for pipeline inspections, had a billion hours (seriously, like 10,000), all professionally flown with 100 hr inspections, no hard student landings, no touch and gos, all two hour low level cross country work videotaping the ground flying 90 kts, nice airplane. I have a 150-150 that we modified to pull gliders, but I use it for aerial photography, and I do make an occassional cross country in it when I need to and it is just me. It has two seats, but it works better as a one-person aircraft for cross country.

My first experience with flying was in the 1960s at a small grass airport. I bummed rides in J-3s, J-4s, Aeronca Champs, and Cessna 140s. None of them had radios and most of them had 65 hp engines. No electric starters either. It truly was "seat of the pants" flying. I loved it. A 'whiskey compass', a needle and ball turn and bank indicator, airspeed, altimeter, and tach were the only instruments.

The Cessna 152 is an excellent trainer, that filled the transition from the WW2 trainers both British and US and the rest of the world. The most valuable asset it has, is its an excellent trainer for spinning. The C152 is a very positive and aggressive spinning aircraft. Spin training on a C152 teaches the pilot so much about high speed stall recover, VNE and spatial awareness. I know the FAA don't approve the C152 and PA28 etc., for spinning training but in the rest of the world in many countries use the C152 for spin training. It can show you so much to realize what a mess you can get into with VFR/IFR weather and hi speed stalling a think that the C152 does very well. The above training knowledge is vital for every pilot, especially if you are plaining to learn IFR flight and get an instrument rating. Retired CPL
