A brief video where i am leaning how to use Garmin GFC500 autopilot system using vertical navigation and automated holding patterns. Plane is a 1976 Cardinal RG.
This is far and away, the best video that I have seen that simply shows how multiple devices are used in conjunction. It originally caught my attention because it's done in a "newer" Cardinal. My first flight after returning from Vietnam in early 1968 was in a 68 Cardinal with 14 hours on the Tach. All of my private pilot training had been done in Cherokees so flying the Cardinal was practically no change, except better. My first owned airplane was a 1969 Cardinal (which is still flying in the UK) that had the 180 hp engine so I truly never knew that the Cardinal had been considered under powered when it had the 150 hp. As much as I liked the A36 Bonanza that I had later, the Cardinal remained my first love. With the avionics package shown here, even if it just sat in my hangar, I could die a happy man.
Wow, amazing kind words, appreciate it very much. Every time i fly the plane (now with my IFR, I am super spoiled) but i hand fly half my approaches to stay sharp but the autopilot makes me look bad!
Regular size iPad and the Ram Yoke mount system. When i went with G3X i no longer have old, analog gauges on the lower portion of the panel so iPad blocks nothing.
I recently bought a 1975 C-177RG (GTN-650, 2 G-5's and S tec-30). What size I Pad are you using? After almost 30 years I am back in aviation and things have changed a bit! Everyone says the small I Pad but after using paper charts all my previous flying it just seems too dang small! After going to Oshkosh and pricing autopilot upgrades (even the Genesis 3100 where I can use the same servos) I think I'll just stick with my S-Tec 30 2 axis, at least for now. It's a normal size iPad, because i don't have any engine guages below the yoke anymore, it doesn't block anything and is much easier to read and work with as my maps etc. It does not interfere with anything and i prefer the size than the mini. Before my G3X, i had to peak around it to see the engine temps, not ideal.

I rented for 18 years before finally buying my own plane, went from 15 hours a year to 115 a year! Looked at 172, DA40, SR20, Grumman Tiger, Archer but so happy i decided to be patient and find the right cardinal RG. Decided RG due to fuel injection, 1000 pound useful load and i cruise all the time at 135 Knots lean of peak and 8.5 gph. Just last week i went rich of peak and was doing 151 knots level flight, 4500 feet so it's a great cross country platform. If you haven't checked it out, goto cardinalflyers.com and there are tons of articles about the Cardinal. Two huge 4 foot door that open 90 degrees makes it super easy to get in and out, never have to move my seat.

Video was labeled and intended just a demonstration of the vertical navigation and automated holding procedures of the Garmin AP. I have since completed my IFR and hand flew my entire check ride. Examiners do however expect you to be proficient in both, running your automation AND being able to do it manually.
Nice I’m not a pilot but if I was I would have that system looks very easy. I would love to fly but I’m a big guy at 390 lbs and I don’t know if I would fit in them training planes.
Most 172's will easily hold 450 pounds front seat and maybe closer to 500, as long as you find a smaller size instructor you should be able to make it work. The 172 Cabin is about 41" wide, the Cardinal is 48" wide inside and 4 foot long doors so much easier and more comfortable to get in but not many flight schools would have a Cardinal. Don't give up hope, call a few flight schools in your area and see what they can accommodate. Try it! you will love it.

I have a 1975 177RGII and it has a Garmin 480 with an SL30 and a STEC 55X. I purchased a G3X Touch, 650xi, G5, GDL 52r with the associated install kits. I can add the G500 with all servos and accessories and switches for $9500. Do you feel that would be really worth the time and added effort to add the G500 features? I like the interface but the 55x works for both gpss, VNAV, and so I’d just be getting the added integration. I’m really tempted but it will mean a couple weeks of downtime while I remove and install servos and adjust tension, calibrate.
Seeing as you have a functional autopilot it's less critical to have all garmin. I sure like the interface, overspeed, underspend, flight envelope protection, Level button and the smoothness of the Garmin. It works top notch like all Garmin gear. I also added electric trim and yaw so it's been an amazing experience flying it. You have a nice setup so unless you feel your missing something, i might not spend the cash just to change brands.
Hello Jorge, neat to get some comments from all the way out in Argentina. I plan on making some more demo videos testing the autopilot, smart glide, flight envelope protection etc. Glad you liked the video
