There is a lot to unpack here. It would be great if you could do a tutorial covering ILS basics and how to use the G1000. This is like learning to sprint 100m before I’m walking. ;)

I have a few comments : 1- What is your weather preset? Looks great for practicing CAT-I approaches. 2- That landing was amazing. 3- For those IFR tutorials, it would probably be a good idea to zoom in a little bit on those instruments. It's quite hard to see the green VOR arrows on a screen with a normal ratio. Those widescreens shots looks great, but instruments appear smaller.

Wow, a lot learned again. I have seen quite a few tutorials about ILS approach etc. and I'm learning now about the VOR's. Thank you for yet an other great instructional video Squirrel. Very much Appreciated. I'm a newbie at all this, and you really help with these. One part of the flight that is still puzzling me is: when I am flying at my cruising alt, without using any ATC, when do I start my descent and at what rate? you touch the subject a few times, but it is not clear to me. Once again, thank you for your time in making these videos.

That where the VS (Vertical Speed) indications come in handy. If you need to drop from 14000 feet to 5000, that's a descent of 9000 feet. How far are you from where you need to be there in minutes? 10 minutes? Okay, you need to keep that vertical speed indicator at about 900 feet per minute. How far out that is depends on how fast you're flying etc, but most places without mucking big mountains in the way are pretty forgiving of getting to your approach altitude a little early, so starting with plenty of margin is usually okay.

Then you can load up the 172 and start to get to know the basics of using the autopilot in the G1000. Plenty of videos on both of these things on YT. I wouldn’t start with ILS yet, just get a normal landing down. Talk to ATC and listen to which runway they tell you to land at. The number of the runway aligns with its heading (so runway 27 is at a heading of 270 degrees when approaching it). They’ll also tell you how to approach the runway, so “base”, “downwind” etc. This takes a bit of practice before you get it, so I’d start there. Look up tutorials on airport patterns. One step at a time, so head straight for instrument flying!

Kamilohbk The sensitivity never changes from ENR. You don’t get TERM, APR, LNAV/VNAV, LPV etc sensitivity. So you can be pretty far off centerline without noticing any deflection on your CDI. Getting to the IAF is a mess. It draws some random arc to it and it doesn’t know anything about about procedure turns. And good luck trying to get it to sequence to the next waypoint. Glidepath isn’t right at all. And for all approaches, the missed approach procedure isn’t included

If you utilize the Lead radial on the app chart you can avoid overshooting the LOC, in real world ops we avoid banks in excess of 30° in IMC to keep the establishment onto the localizer smooth, last thing you want is to go out of tolerance on the last turn and go missed after a 15 mile arc procedure.

As I am learning this flight sim I have appreciated all of the proceeding lessons and have learnt a lot. I have been sticking to the Cessna which features heavily in previous lessons and was hoping that the introduction to ILS landings was made in that. Not only has Squirrel jumped up a plane, he has also outlined the HARDEST way to use ILS. Lost me completely. This is the first video here I have not upticked as it seems illogical to both change the usual plane AND describe the hardest way to implement an ILS landing. Great for advanced users, but very off putting for us novices. Sorry mate.

@POolBacK 4 года назад
The previous ILS video in the TBM 930 was a very easy way to do ILS, you should check that one out. To be honest, it's done the same way as the Cessna 152, except in the 152 you have to manually follow the indicators, whereas here you just let the auto-pilot do everything. Also, huge issue, the Cessna 152 doesn't have a DME, so it's kinda hard to follow a procedure when you don't know your distance to the target. The DME is the instrument that gives you a distance on the radio navaids you are connected to, like VOR beacon or LOC (ILS) beacons. With the Cessna 152 in the game, you can roughly follow an ILS descent manually, but you cannot follow the procedure of an approach chart. You will have to upgrade to the 172 for that. Another clarification. He didn't highlight the hardest way to do an ILS landing. He highlighted a harder way to approach to intercept the ILS. ILS landing is always done the same way, but how you get to the ILS is different. To clarify, landing in IFR is done in two steps : 1- Follow a specific route around the airport that guides you to a specific point where you intercept the ILS (or whatever you use to descend), this is called the STAR and is what is shown in those charts documents. 2- Actually perform the final descent (like the ILS). If you just want to practice the ILS descent, you can just roughly fly towards the axis of the airport, with good enough distance and keeping a given altitude (in this example here it's 3000ft I believe ?). Then as you intercept the ILS, you can just follow the indicators of the ILS. You don't need to follow the whole STAR to just practice ILS approach.

@@POolBacK thank you for those useful comments. I have already started using the 172 as Squirrel has used it for a few of the tutorials and found it to be as easy to fly as the 152. What put me off was the three screens in the 208 as I would rather master the 172 before venturing any further up the ladder. I must have missed the ILS video in a TBM 930 so I shall follow your advice and take a look at that. Thanks again,

@@BoxersAreTheBest don't be put off by the 3 screens. The 208 has 3 screens, but the right most screen is a copy of the left most screen. It's only used for co-pilot, just don't pay attention to it. For all intent and purposes, the 208 uses actually only two screen and is almost the same system as the 172, with minimal variation. But yeah, in general, I would recommend focusing on the 172 to do this. Just input the frequency of the ILS as NAV1, make sure to change your PFD to VOR 1. Fly to intercept the axis of the runway at a certain distance. Hold 3000 altitude for now, and as you pick up the signal, align yourself on the LOC (or press the NAV button on the autopilot to do it automatically) and then you can presse the APR button on the autopilot to automatically descend following the glide slope. Really easy.

If you're looking for something that works, has okay scenery, taxi systems that work, and a complete fight school built-in, I highly recommend MS FSX. Learned with it myself from scratch, and kept notes at the beginning, but it's (all) lots of basics and some older stuff, but it's your 'free' building blocks, and a virtual complete flight school at home at your own pace. I look at my (19yr) grandson who's watching me explain 2020 on his Xbox(flying by thumbs on those controllers is a joke, and buttons, sticks, the controls seem backward to me, up is down, left is right, is just crazy to me, but a few I've managed to get switched but not all, which causes other learning problems to re-learn,) and realize he's no way ready to even barely taxi or fly a simple pattern there's so much to know before you can begin. Can't wait to spring for a good yoke. Suggestions? ~late to 2020 in 24.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I think it was even better than the last one because of the way you demonstrated how to use the VOR and ADF in addition to the ILS. I'll need to watch it a few more times though to fully understand it.

Hell yes, nice! I sat center seat in a USAF Learjet that did the approach into LAX like that one smoggy night. Totally looked like that! THANX

One of your best videos!! Learned quite a bit in this short clip! And it's so cool that it was IMC and the runway just appeared exactly where it should!!

Where do you get the charts that fs2020 uses? For example I see your chart is dated 2019, the jeppesen charts I have are 2021 dated. Is fs2020 procedures database up to date? Where I'm from procedures are being changed frequently.

please break down in detail how the approach chart works in relation to the flight. Ive watched a ton of vids on how to read jepp/faa charts but I'd like to see it in action.. if you did a video just like thsi but broke it all down detail by detail that would be awesome.

It all looks so easy, when someone else does it. It all looks like something to lead a news bulletin if I try it.

Thanks. Great tutorial but as others have said it's a lot to unpack. Will need to review the video several more times to take it all in. Thanks for taking the time!
