@@Boodieman72 35R/17L is/was out of service for heavy construction work. It never fails, you take one of two runways out of service on purpose, and the other one closes itself.

I know some planes must have the full length but in cases like this where it seemed like it was kinds close, would an aircraft be required to take off exactly at the intersection or could they taxi up the runway and turn around before the disabled aircraft if it gives them the required length?

If i'm in need of a medevac flight, I would probably be a screamer too. Not even the pain either, but the medical bills.

I was wondering the same thing. I have wondered for years if a plane could drive over top of its chocks if it really wanted to. I don't think so but I'm not really sure

Easy to check: EDC has no 35L, so that's that.

Haven't seen a B-29, were they not retired in the early 1960s?, or were you thinking of the B-52 StratoFortress?

It was the former Bergstrom Air Force base. The runways were one of the main reasons why the airport ended up there because 35L was built for all types of military planes. They only needed to refurbish both runways because they were in good condition already. Also the closure of base was other reason. My dad was stationed there while he was in Air Force. Remember going to air shows and seeing the USAF Thunderbirds.

@@toddmcdonald8881 not really related to anything in particular but is kinda funny. Just got back from Germany and my ex (now) and I were going to Randolph for some reason but we decided to stop at Bergstrom, by the time I figured it out we had already driven onto the base. We found a guard shack that kinda off to the side with a civilian type security guard in it. The BX was one of the last buildings to close and the guard said it happened about a week earlier. Talk about kinda shock....

It was for the B-52, which also needs an extra wide runway for the outrigger gear. My understanding is that the runway had to be painted to make it a standard width to avoid causing depth perception issues with visual approaches.

The Audio is provided by ATCLive so, unfortunately for this case no. The receiver recording the Audio is blocked from receiving the signal from that end of the runway.

I know someone in Austin has been working on a better antenna that would reach the runways, not sure how thats going.....

The tape is amateur aviation enthusiasts with frequency scanners. Location of their equipment can make it impossible to get good audio, where the tower is actually hearing the aircraft clearly. its unlikely for the official tape to be released, because a blown tire is just something that happens sometimes and while it caused a runway to be shutdown, nobody was hurt and the aircraft probably had no other damage. Just a tire that blew for one reason or another. Then they have to spend a while cleaning the runway after the airplane is towed off.

More has to do with their radio. Signal not strong enough to pick up from wherever this receiver was positioned.

When clearing aircraft for intersection takeoff, the measured remaining distance must be issued, By back tracking, on the rwy, he would have 7,211+?? feet remaining. It must be a known measured distance.

The receiver doing the recording is not at the airport. It's a recording done by a private citizen and their LOS to the disabled airplane was blocked.

Doubtful that a Citation would have had to use excessive braking landing on that long a runway, or that a long taxi in that light an aircraft would generate heat enough to blow fuse plugs.

Over here when our new runway opened up the planes kept blowing tires because of heat buildup.

@@XtremeBaset AUS does not need another runway. That would be a waste of money and resources, and the growth of the city doesn’t support it. It’s more efficient to divert traffic to other airports if a situation such as this arises. And no, a runway under construction can not be opened for an emergency, due to the nature of the construction and the equipment that may be on it.
