I was fortunate enough to be invited to see the Cessna 408 SkyCourier up close on their demo visit a few days ago. They flew into Nassau to showcase the 408 to Bahamian airlines. Being a 19-seater (and having similar operating costs to a single engine Cessna Caravan), the 408 can replace the fleets of several airlines here. For $9million, it will be interesting to see who bites.

I've been watching videos on this aircraft and it's pretty impressive to say the least. Looking forward to seeing lots of these in service. Definitely good to see advanced small twin turboprop coming into the picture. This is perfect for the market in Bahamas. As usual - great video!

What is interesting about this vehicle is its range and speed. It seems to be a significant improvement over similar models, either by Cessna or others. This is a proper commercial aircraft that acutally makes a difference.

Im a plane guy. Have been for many years. I thought i knew 99% of planes. Never seen this one. I plane spot too. I watch planes all over the world on radar, i have never seen this cessna. Im shocked and totally blown away by this as im an avid plane person. Now i have to check myself again lol.

I have about 600 hours in the Beech 1900D and I don't see what the 408 can do that the 1900D can't already do or do better. It's like the designers at Cessna didn't know that the 1900D or Twin Otter exist already.

The biggest compliment for a manufacture is when people copy your designs. Flagrant copy of twin otter except not as robust, lower power etc.

At some point in the commercial passenger flying regulations airlines are effectively mandated to use twin engined aircraft. I believe that the crossover point is 10 passengers.

I don’t see why Cessna doesn’t simply try an enlarged version of the the 208 Caravan adding a boom tail and another engine behind the cabin like a 337 Skymaster. If they wanted to make it super safe in the event of engine-out situations they could fit both engines with a six-blade contra-rotating propeller. It eliminates torque and leaves the wings clean for A STOL kit, fuel tanks and spoilers.

I was thinking this would be competing with the twin otter, and get in and out of short fields, but 3600 for take off and 3100 for landing, isn’t short field. The King Air 200 can do that.

Given the astounding reliability of current PT-6 engines, this seems to be an airplane answer to a question no-one asked. Yet someone must have asked it. There ain't no way the operating costs will be similar to a 208.

It's a very capable cargo machine for FedEx/UPS feeders. I'm surprised the pax configurations holds as many as it does though I doubt it'll be used that way often

This plane was make for FedEx feeder ops. Their 208s are aging and slow they went and asked Cessna to build them a new one. 210 knots still isn’t great for having two PT6s

Some websites said 5-6mil but when I spoke to the team during the demo, they mentioned around 9. I didnt want to put a specific number since I couldnt find anything from Cessna themselves.

Cessna has done some astonishing things in my lifetime but this is not one of them I fear. I imagine the list price for one of these sets it in the category of the incredibly capable Beech 1900 or something like a Jetstream 32 which defeats the point because that sector is well catered for by existing machines. Let’s see I guess.

Agreed, not groundbreaking. Back in 1968 the Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante already had similar performance figures with slightly less powerful (and more economical) PT6 engines.

Catered by existing machines yes. Few 19 seat machines in production. By the time the last 1900s and twin otters are phased out the used market for these machines will be in demand.

Very nice but the Twin Otter has been at it for over 56 years and it has been on snow, water and tundra. The same story with the Caravan. The DHC 3 Otter has been at it since 1953 or 69 years ! The DHC 3 is outdated but still out does the newer Caravan in so many ways. My question is what does ±9 million SkyCourier really get more for you ? That's a lot of cash just to go a bit faster and only for 3,660 feet of pavement, no water or snow or tundra (not yet). I don't see it.

Nice aircraft, although with a take off roll of nearly 3700 feet it is certainly no STOL aircraft. Huge weight hauling capacity, but it will need some runway.

The cargo version is aimed at the Caravan users who feed the main Federal Express, United Parcel Service, DHL hubs. I suspect that the passenger version is designed to deal with some of the EAS operations and co-branded regional feeder airlines. Both types of operations operate from nice relatively long paved runways.
