Cessna's load-hauling 206-series Stationair has always been a working-pilot's airplane. With an increase in useful load, Garmin's G1000 NXi integrated avionics, leather seating and a cowling design that helps manage engine heat, the 2018 T206H HD is the flagship product in Textron Aviation's single-engine Cessna piston lineup.
For this flight trial video, Aviation Consumer Editor Larry Anglisano took a close look at the airplane with Textron Aviation's Steve Kent.
Read a full report in the August 2018 issue of sister publication Aviation Consumer magazine.

Neil - As a young 81, I have figured out that some of the inflated prices are caused by the 'need for speed', which is usually people with inflated egos... 😏

I'm gonna say this. Steve Kent is a sharp man. I would hope that someone of his caliber works at Textron Aviation - he builds confidence in the brand! After listening to him my perception of quality, performance and safety shot up.

For those of you complaining about costs, you need to consider what this plane can do. Look at the twin engine Beach Baron or the Piper Seneca. They boat cost way more but carry much less. The Baron with full fuel can barely carry 2 people and some light baggage. The 206 is a work horse with a maximum useful load of 1800 lbs. With full fuel it can still carry 4 ppl and bags. At 165 knots. Sure the twins go a bit faster but they can’t carry all your stuff and friends. If I had the money the 206 would be on a very short list for me.

Fun fact about the Windham Airport in Willimantic, Connecticut: It was originally owned by the Town of Windham, but was sold in the 1970s to the State of Connecticut for $1 in order to keep the airport running after the town ran into some financial difficulties and couldn’t afford to continue operating the airport.

This guy is obviously a salesman to the bone, but this _does_ seem like an impressively versatile and well thought out little airplane. Just how easily configurable they made it -- especially with the seats and doors -- and the fact that they took into consideration not only the _size_ of standard items like pallets and oil drums, but also the ease of loading/unloading them. This level of forethought in engineering shouldn't feel impressive to me (especially in a modern machine with a modern price tag), but it does. I've seen nothing in my last 5 Chevys or Fords that has led me to believe the engineers put even 10% of the consideration of user experience that the people who engineered this airplane have.

It's a real big plane. I sat in one at a Cessna sales demo at an FBO I flew into a while back. If you're used to a 172 (as I am) the 206 feels huge. It's especially surreal because the proportions are all basically the same, so it's like someone took a 172 and just enlarged it by 2x.

I'm glad I got the opportunity to get checked out in a 206 years ago and now I'm back flying the might powerful TS IO -520 300 . I love how the aircraft performance is from takeoff to climb cruise power during my flight and it would be great if Cessna would design more cowling luvers for CHT but overall I manage it by my cowl flaps and power settings below 400 degrees at times and especially during my descent to prevent shock cooling from 10,000 feet or below to pattern altitude and if anyone has a 2018 Turbo 206 that needs to be delivered or justified for flight operations to carry passengers or freight then let me know so I can utilize the aircraft for you or your company

Just don’t count on opening those cargo doors after an emergency off-field crash landing with the flaps down. The 180-185 or Beaver provide safer bush operation. It’s done, but don’t even think about beach landings. The nose wheel gets in the way and a prop strike can be lethal.

So in an emergency the back seat passengers can't open the forward rear door to prevent jamming on landing? Or if they do the pilot cannot use the flaps? Will the forward rear door open fully after the flaps are deployed?
@kylevk
@kylevk 5 лет назад
Brandon Murray There is a cutout in the flaps on the right side of the aircraft. The front door can be opened far enough to unlatch and fully open the rear door.

@@kylevk ok, that makes sense, but the front back door can't be opened prior to landing or the flaps don't work. Correct?

Unless one of the lawn darts hanging out the door snags his reserve handle (or his throwaway gets snagged). Had a static line student deploy *INSIDE* the cabin once. The jumpmaster dived on it real quick. I like the C205 because it had the escape door up front with me. To get out of a 206 you needed to be at 4,500 and then you would get a 4 or 5 second canopy ride. That happened to a pilot at the same DZ that I flew from. They gave him a first jump certificate and then grounded him for opening too low. :) True, it happened but the cert and grounding were a joke. He never flew singles as a jump pilot again. He would only fly the old Bongo after that incident.

In 1956 a new car cost on average $2050. A new Cessna 172 in that same year cost about 4 times that at $8700. An average new car in 2018 cost less than $35,000 yet a new Cessna 172 now cost almost 10 times as much. Aircraft shouldn’t cost so much but they charge crazy prices because unless you buy an aircraft kit and build it yourself, they know u don’t have a choice but to pay it.

Cessna missed a golden opportunity. They had a chance to corner the market on the small trainer market when they introduced the 162. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE CESSNA! But, non-pressurized and dated design? Come on Cessna! Same sentiments for the Caravan too! If offering for personal use as an option, should be able to climb above the weather with that kind of passenger capacity/room and pricing! Let's get into today or beyond, have your design engineers sharpen their pencils, and get to work. Cessna can or should be, ultra competitive in all aspects of innovation, design and pricing! YOU CAN DO IT!👍🇺🇸💪 Or Possibly introduce an updated version of the Cessna P-210, with optional power-plants. Option #1 could be a piston that can burn Jet A and option #2 could be a Turbo-prop. Offer a few panel equipment options and AOA. Try to price it accordingly and put together an agressive marketing campaign. Thoughts? (If cannot have any of the above, c an we at least request a more ergonically friendly T-handle, console mounted throttle quadrant, that would of course include a mixture control lever in that same quadrant). Although I am a "High-wing" Pilot, and a fan of Cessna, it would be very tempting if Piper reintroduced an updated version of the 6-place Saratoga, with optional or standard pressurized cabin, a couple of power-plant options (1. Piston that can burn Jet A or 2. Turbo-prop), a few panel equipment options and AOA. Again, thoughts/suggestions would be awesome. Happy/Safe Flying!

Yeah, come on Cessna, the world can’t wait for a 1.3 million dollar C206 replacement!

@@ATLMD88 Point taken. Possible solution: introduce an updated version of the Cessna P-210, with optional power-plants. Option #1 could be a piston that can burn Jet A and option B could be a Turbo-prop. Offer a few panel equipment options and AOA. Try to price it accordingly and put together an agressive marketing campaign. Your thoughts? Thanks!

@@ATLMD88 yeah correct, Cessna work for buyers, not fans or reviewers. Buyers prefer cost rather than supercar design.

The C-207 is a much better x-wind airplane.I feel it would have been a much better choice for your up grade.

Cessna Centurion 1986 model R. It is much better than this Stationair. I can not understand why Cessna stopped making the Cessna 210. This Stationar burns twice as much fuel as a Centurion and flies more slowly.

From a marketing standpoint I'm guessing it's easier to sell a plane that doesn't require maintenance for retractable gear or require the pilot to have the ability to operate retractable gear. Which is why Cirrus doesn't have RG.

$708,000 isn't a bad price, but I wonder about the realism of achieving a 167 kt airspeed with an IO-540 and fixed gear. Seems like magic.
@yamashill
@yamashill 5 лет назад
Actually it’s a TIO-540. The magic is in the T. I have a TU-206G with the TSIO520 and it has no problem doing 163KTAS @17.5k and about 72% power. I agree that sharing max speeds for 100% power is a little irrelevant for a “review”.

True airspeed probably at 20,000 feet with cannulas. The Corvallis has fixed gear and uses the same principle to get up to its record setting speeds.
@saratogapilot6100
@saratogapilot6100 5 лет назад
Thanks. I have a fixed gear Saratoga, of almost the same horsepower as advertised for the 206 HD at sea level, and on a hot day, I don't even get up to cannula altitude, much less the flight levels. Perhaps I should cash in some Bitcoin and get a TBM 850. Love the smell of kerosene.

They've got to get the cruise speed up to at least 190 knots and still not burn through the fuel, It's just too slow the way it is

Regardless of retail amount, would be nice if Cessna or Textron would style the 206 from rear glass forward, like the 177 Cardinal. A more aerodynamic front end should result in better fuel burn, increased speed and look more up to date/"sexy". A more comfortable T-handle throttle lever would be nice too. Also, a JET-A TURBO w/FADEC option and pressurized cabin would be awesome. If possible, strengthen the wing spars and no more wing struts, which is another increase in aerodynamics/speed, better aesthetics and reduced wind noise. Thats all.
