CFA Piling 3/9 - When to use CFA Continous Flight Auger Piling Method
Hello Piling Friends,
In this video, we’ll be covering When to use CFA Piling?
As a rule of thumb, the CFA Technology is suitable when the hole is collapsible. As mentioned in our previous video “What is CFA Piling”, with this technology there is not an open hole at any time during the construction process.
In terms of Soil Geology, the CFA Piling Method can be used for:
-All types of clays.
-Medium to very dense sands and gravels.
-Very week and fractured rock.
-And foundations below the ground water table.
Then, depending on the designed structures, CFA Piling is recommended for:
-All types of structures with low to medium vertical loads.
The bored diameter and depth should also be considered when choosing CFA. Usually most popular CFA diameters are from 300 mm to 900mm. It can go in some rare cases up to 1.2 meters’ diameters. As for depth, it’s recommended up to 25 meters. Although lately, more manufacturers are trying to reach greater depths. For instance, this 50 meters Waltman rig showcased last year at Bauma in Munich.
It’s worth mentioning the deepest CFA ever performed was achieved in 2013 by an American company. They managed to drill to 56 meters, however it was achieved by adding 5 meters’ auger sections. Needless to say, it wasn’t very fast.
