Everyone reading this please send a message to CGC at www.cgccomics.com/contact/ and tell them that warped inner wells and bending of your comics is unacceptable. Ask how they are addressing the issue and to please make a public statement about it soon. We can't sit around and expect CGC to do anything, we need to have our voices heard. Your help is appreciated!
Well, I sent my message to CGC about the issue. I highly doubt they are going to do anything for their customers. We can only hope that they do something internally to address preventing this problem in the future. Even then, I'm not holding my breath on that one.
I sent my message as well. I think if this is not addressed, I'm pretty sure this is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Since it is their product that is causing the damage.
I just got 11 books in from CGC that me and a friend sent in, ours are warped and the books have ticks on the spines that were never there. I think they are either man handling them or the inner well is to long and being pushed into the case and its warping the book,
I am holding a poll on my channel right now and 74% of people are saying they have warped CGC books so far. My guess is that it's higher than that for people who submitted recently.
I still can't believe this is even a thing. Feels like a nightmare and has to be hurting a lot of buyers/sellers not to mention the books we keep in the collection. Imagine how many books out there are in the population that are bent, and the owners might not even realize it
With all the issues that CGC has/had, it amazes me that more people don't switch to CBCS. Instead we just have videos on CGC problems. Don't see CBCS videos with problems...
The reason you don't see videos with CBCS problems is because nobody is using them. There's a chance CBCS might be going out of business sooner or later. Their top graders are leaving and one is joining PSA to head their team. Once PSA starts grading comics next year they could push CGC aside and become #1 very fast. If CBCS goes out of business their slabs will lose almost all market value. The plastic PSA uses on their slabs is top notch better than CGC or CBCS, doesn't crack and chip as easy, they are making there comic slabs thicker and more malleable so if they drop they won't break so easy. A CGC slab feels like a piece of fragile glass compared to a PSA slab.
@@beachrain8617 Good thing I don't trade grading companies, just graded comics. CGC, CBCS, PSA, doesn't matter to me, only interested in the grade of the book, and all those listed companies are accredited graders. This industry needs competition to get these guys producing better results. At least we're getting choices if one decides to screw the pooch (like CGC at the moment).
Absolutely agree with your concerns over this issue. Completely Unacceptable! Until CGC fixes this issue of bending comics after grading process I won’t be sending any submissions,… Period!
CBCS methods for slabbing and overall quality of slabs are far superior to CGC. It's a shame CGC is recognized as the gold standard for grading companies. Bry's comics just did a video highlighting a Transformers #1 graded a CGC 9.9 and it's Clearly a 9.4.. at best!
Yea, already tried to get one of my books repressed and graded from the wolvie 50th signing. They give me the “within tolerance” BS. They’re literally trying to bury their heads in the sand on this.
There is no real evidence for this...I know people say this and think this but I've seen no evidence to support this. Every CBCS book I've sold I price at CGC prices and they sell at those prices. There are also examples where CBCS has sold for more than CGC....just like there are examples where CGC has sold for more than CBCS....point being...there is no evidence of cgc consistantly selling for more....its just not true despite what people might think.
@@dailycomicsfix I'm going off of comparisons I've seen online, such as the videos from Automatic Comics here on RU-vid where he compares auction sale prices of CGC and CBCS books.(ex: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NA4-oo73N18.html). His analysis says that CBCS books tend to go for 15 - 20% less than CGC, at least in the auctions he watches. I've tried to do my own analysis off of eBay sales data, but there are so few CBCS books sold that it's very hard to do.
In the current environment with all of CGC's problems, would you willingly pay full FMV for a CGC book?. With their grading inconsistencies and now bowed books I wouldn't touch a CGC book, even if it was at a discount. I'll buy CBCS books with no hesitation.
Glad this issue is getting more attention. There is currently a thread on CGC forum with more photos and discussion of this issue. This is the damage I was referring to in one of your other videos. I had damage to 5 of 7 books sent graded 7/01/24. The damage to my books are more noticeable with 2 having shaken comic syndrome and others with finger bends. I sent 3 in for ME. 1 of the 3 got fixed the other 2 where rejected. After talking to CGC they escalated the issue and they are paying for me to send those 2 back to press/regrade.
@ImproveCollectingComics Update on my end. Got 2 books back from CGC that where refused. They said these where not touched and returned. It looks like they did reholder as they are less curved as before. I went ahead and used the credit they gave me to send them back for press/regrade as I am still seeing finger bends on one and the other has a cracked slab.
There's no denying that on older slabs there will likely be some deflection and bending whether they've lived horizontally or vertically. But this new issue is inexcusable. I went back and forth with CGC for seven months over a book that took four resubmissions to return fully corrected. I was always polite to CGC customer service because they're painfully limited in how they can respond, but I was firm and I did and up escalating my issue. Initially they feined accountability so I wrote to the Sarasota BBB after which they handled my issue that included a full refund plus a nice grading credit. Nothing you can do after a few weeks of receiving books but for new problem books not all hope is lost. That said, pick the battles and the books that are really worth fighting for. They're likely to be inundated with a lot of issues that will overwhelm them and stall everything again. Plus if they get a deluge they might, as I have heard falsely rumored, not make this new CGC-caused "defects" part of standard grading.
Bravo for you on calling this out. CGC might have been good at one time but after all of the controversy they have had. CGC has proven they do not care unless you are a large auction site. My son had a Spider-man 252 graded 9.6 by CGC last year he has now renamed it the pregnant one. (Same one as you had shown) he Was very disappointed and refuses to send anymore of his collection of comics to CGC for grading. He is waiting to hear feed back on how PSA will do. He has used CBCS but their customer service needs work. As you have shown in past videos of books returned from grading. It is subjective. You have said a book should get no higher than a 9.4 and has comeback to you a 9.8. As long as people buying slabed books only notice the grade this problem will never go away People pay for the grade not the presentation.
Do NOT get your hopes up for PSA. Their service has been in a steep decline over the past 5 years. We are talking damaged cards getting 10's. 5's being sent in for a regrade getting 9+. Authenticating fakes. Authenticating Resealed product. Wrong card in the wrong slab and the list goes on and on. Please do your due dilligence before sending to PSA for your personal collection. If you want to make a quick buck flipping comics, PSA is probably fine as people are lemmings, lol.

This issue would lead to any slabbed comics by CGC since they made changes to the case would not sell at their inferred grade aka $$$. If that happens even less people will use CGC for the time being? I wanted to send comics in for grading but now I'm "scared straight" and waiting. To change my mind they would have to come out with an explanation/ apology and solution. They don't appear to be concerned with the competition? They need to realize even giant companies can quickly end up in the trash by the Public based on issues like this. Remember Blockbuster? Wrong decisions can be lethal. I hope they figure it out to everyone's satisfaction.
Yes, it’s not as isolated as we would like or hoped it to be! One submission in May of this year all books showed the bowing that you described! With one book 9.8 permanently damage as you can see the waviness that you described that can be pressed out but has pulled at the staples to permanently the staple holes bigger! I sent it back but have stop submitting! I’m in the same camp how much should we deemed acceptable or give cgc a pass as it falls within their tolerance levels! This is my main beef after all this and what cgc is missing the point! These are collectibles and in the case of my damage book something I’ve held, loved and cared for the last forty years!! Where is the quality control does it even exist! Do they treat our books with kids gloves! I personally would be willing to pay more to know these issues would be addressed but the assemble line process doesn’t work for collectibles or me!! I went off on the tangent you said you wouldn’t but I’ve reached my breaking point!
It's very possible that 100% of regular thickness comics have been damaged over the past few months. If that is the case, then something like that could destroy their entire company. I am not sure how many books they slab a month, but it's gotta be a ton.. I doubt they could handle that type of loss, paying out months of refunds and then having to reholder all those books

THANK YOU (why more youtubers aren't calling this out and calling it what it is--comic book grading doublespeak when CGC says bowing is "normal--is probably obvious, so again, THANK YOU). Yes, it's bad. I simply swipe left on any CGC slab with a 43 or later cert number and have not yet sent in any books since learning about this which, unfortunately was after I sent in 15 vintage books in July. Anecdotally, it may be that vintage or at least Golden Age books are largely spared (or is that wishful projection on my part?). The CGC Forum chat on this is about 45 pages long! The whole affair is stunning.
Unfortunately l believe they ruined my recent conservation on an X-Men #1 from 1963. The inner well was too small for the book causing it to buckle inside. Very unfortunate. CGC did not want to take accountability.

CGC needs to start treating and handling their customer's books as they would their own. Well, if some of the employees at CGC eat buttered popcorn and handle their own comics while chewing bubble gum and applying hair spray at the same time, then no! I've seen your videos where they dropped books and even sent back scuffed and cracked cases. This is totally unacceptable. I have yet to submit my own books to CGC, but I would like to some day. If it's safe. I have purchased multiple CGC, CBCS, and PGX books online though. I'm hesitant to submit my own now.
Yeah, so after watching this video I went and checked mine. All 6 of the comics that I have received back from CGC in the past year have got that "Banana Bend" to them.
I just sighed irl, it looks like nearly 100% of books might have some type of bend. I wonder if it might have something to do with an attempted "fix" of newton rings?
I just received a box of 20. The first 7 I looked at have rippling along the top (which I have seen before) and heavy waviness / gullies along the spine. One now has several alien ticks that weren’t there when submitted. These are 9.8. As usual a, a lot of scuffs and scratches too. Not sure what to do…such a waste of time. (Yes they look higher on the ends when look from the side)

I agree with you Jim, can definitely see it in some of the books, a few worse than others. And yes, could cause the covers to buckle or pucker a little near the spine due to stress. I think you’re correct in pointing it out. CGC needs to do better.
Just looked at my most recent books. Yup, all have slight bowing. One was already a reholder they botched the first time. I have a batch there right now and im definitely nervous. This might be the last straw for me.
Is it actually damaging the books??? When you hold a book raw it bends all the time. Just depends if the bend is damaging the book or not. Storing books raw can create bends as well.
I received 6 books back in mid July that I sent in for signature verification and all 6 of them came back with severely warped inner wells. Four of them had color breaking spine nicks that were not there when I sent them in to CGC. I sent the 6 comics back to CGC for Mechanical Error and I received them back on 8/19/24. All 6 books came back with warped inner wells similar or actually worse than when I got them back the first time. CGC has not fixed the problem, buyer beware.
I was just looking at 9 comics that I prescreened for 9.8 in May. A few of them do indeed show bending beyond "acceptable" and I just noticed that 2 of them have spine ticks (non color-breaking) that were absolutely not there when I submitted them. In the case of one of them, it's so big that there's zero chance the book would have gotten the 9.8 with it. So I'm guessing both might have been caused after/during the encapsulation. Arghh... wtf??? I never inspected them closely when I got them back because I had full faith in CGC.
@@ImproveCollectingComics Yeah. Unfortunately, I wont be sending any more books to CGC until they fix this. The fact that they consider bending as "normal" is absurd. Making a case to hold something flat is not some kind of extreme engineering. In fact it should be like the bare minimum that a CGC slab should accomplish. I really want to send more in because I like to display them graded/slabbed, but I cant stand to think of my favorite and expensive books getting damaged like that. =(
Hey my guy the inner sleeve that the comics are sealed in are mylar are they not. I'm thinking that maybe when they where sealed they where still a little warm so when the inner sleeve cooled it curved. Which means what there Quality control there is none.
It's possible, but I am not sure what the process is.. heating the books is a really bad idea though, if that's part of the process. Books should remain as cool as possible at all times
@ImproveCollectingComics not the book just the inner sealed holder to seal it. Enough to seal not enough to do anything to the book and when it cooled on a stack say of books you get that curve. Not giving them a pass but this isn't the first quality control issue that they have had. Trying to knock out submissions they could have missed a few steps. I say all graders have had quality control issues.
Great informative video, seems like the changes to the seal cause the inner will to eventually bend due to pressure, maybe it needs some air to breath and they created too good of a seal which warps the inner well?
Based on what I see in various RU-vid Channels most who regularly make submissions are shutting down for the time being. That's got to be a huge impact on CGC Revenue that they can't ignore? Would that be an opportunity for PSA to buy them out?
I got credit with them but still probably not sending books in. The comics I want to send are lower grade golden age books with spine split problems, imagine this could completely detach or split a cover! Even in lower grades these golden age comics are worth hundreds if not some thousands
I've said it on this channel more than once, CGC is a SCAM!!! The CBCS holder looks nicer and they definitely grade more consistently. I try to stay away from graded books unless it is a mega blue chip key. You guys have it, I'll keep mine raw.
I don't understand why more people don't use CBCS. Clear, solid cases, no newton rings, no bending of comics, consistent grading... I really don't understand.
I am a new collector I watch these channels to help me get my books get good grades I clean the books as best I can not looking for miracles but I sent books in the cgc and they came back with greater notes fingerprints smudges on the rear I bet if you dust those fingerprints they're not mine lol some other notes on another book where crunching on the bottom what the hell?😮 what the hell is crunching😮 anyway I think I'm just going to keep my books Raw or I'll just send my books to my man doing the videos here he's awesome
This stuff is happening quite often now. I just had a few "rejects" come back from a 9.8 pre-screen. Two had obvious pencil marks on it that weren't there before I sent it. Another had an edge bend that was new while another had a corner bend. It's obvious the grader was rough with the books and my grades suffered

You'd think with all the Ls CGC has been taking lately they'd be minding their Ps and Qs but no, they just continue to get more expensive while their quality circles the drain. Maybe they'll miraculously discover a mountain of 10.0s in their submissions to quiet everyone down again.

I think it definitely shows that it has nothing to do with the new security of the cases but something else is going on very recently to make the issue worse. It's like they got in a batch of inner wells that were slightly too big for the cases but instead of sending them back, they just used them. Just a guess
I just got 3-4 back that were bent in the slab creating deep valleys along the spine - they look worse than before they were pressed. Not sure what to do with them.
I think we need to all send them back immediately and demand a press and new slab. Reference this video so we make sure they see it. I think if they suddenly got back 10,000 mechanical errors they'd have to do something, right?

That's the problem here for sure. If we want top dollar for our books, we gotta use them. I wish that would change, because it's starting to feel dirty and like a deal with the devil. I don't like it at all
@@ImproveCollectingComics same here, waiting on a book I submitted for a signing and by my math it should have came back by now. CGC must be correcting the inner well bending, creating a back log for encapsulating. So the question is how long will this last? I really wanted to send another book in for a signing but this last experience is killing it for me, I don't want to see my book come back from a press I paid for and a signature i paid for all bent to shit in a slab some unqualified grader sees fit to call ok. I hoped the QC would be up to standard by now.
I love your channel and all but regardless of CGC's issues, you're really not sending a great message here when all you do is grade with CGC. You've made them a lot of money this year alone. I take major umbrage with RU-vidrs who say this and that but all you see are "CGC reveals", "CGC price guide" and the all too popular top 10 whatever with only CGC sales. You're an indirect influencer. If we saw you subbing with CBCS like let's say Mint Hunter does sometimes, then maybe people will shift their subs with CBCS. CGC could warp, bend, powerbomb your books and you'd still use them. I will never stop watching your channel but if there is a change happening, it needs to start with RU-vidrs who constantly push CGC to the moon.
I appreciate your honest feedback. I have only been back in the hobby for going on three years and am learning a lot as I go. I only recently started considering other graders, have tried CBCS (They are good but not perfect) and am looking forward to trying PSA. I definitely want to get the most value from my books and right now it's still CGC. But I am hoping that changes soon. I want their to be equally good options so having a "big three" might be the impetus these companies need to compete and improve what they are doing. I have a feeling PSA might be the kick in the butt both CGC and CBCS need to improve. But yeah, I am mainly in this to be a cleaner/presser and help people get better at that. My intention wasn't ever to become a full time dealer. My plan is to do that only to learn how, so I can more intelligently give advice to people. I'll try to do more of these types of videos to highlight the weaknesses (and strengths) of companies that people in this hobby do business with. Thanks again, I love these types of comments to help keep things in perspective for me.
