I remember how outraged people were over the dress, and I kind of agree. The film makers spent way too much money on a dress that a cosplayer would have made better and closer to the animated version.
If I remember correctly the dress she wore wasn’t the original dress a lot of money was spent on, it was made last minute due to Emma Watson refusing to wear corsets claiming they are torture devices
@@myStitch11this is true. This was after she filled Little Women also and she made the same restriction for that movie too, so they had to change her outfits
Belle's dress is the most sad dress. I get emma was like "no corsets, need movement" but cmon, cinderella's dress was so perfect and they sprinted in that too
Except that women for ~200 years were doing far more physically-exhaustive work in stays and corsets so even then "no corsets, need movement" doesn't even make sense. Properly made corsets (even though the movie was in the 1700s and she'd be wearing stays, the precursor to corsets, instead) should NOT be uncomfortable at all. She literally ruined the costuming entirely because she wanted to publicly make a statement by not wearing any support-wear under the dress; which really shows.
They let her make too many decisions that helped ruin the film and I really don’t understand why, it’s not like they needed her for her beautiful voice and top-notch acting skills 🤭
@@tomemeornottomeme1864From what I remember about a behind the movie clip is that a designer said they wanted her to wear a proper fitted one not a shape changing one so she would be comfortable and able to support the weight without any pain. But she took it the wrong way and went to the media all “look how they are trying to treat me”. I wear a corset and it is so comfortable I can breath and my back is supported. There is a little change in movements like how I bend down because of how the boning acts but nothing crazy. Just moved in wood pellets with it on with no problem.

@@sandravacca5464Because she refused to wear the proper supportive garments. A dress made more similarly to the original would likely be made of velvet with a few petticoats over a hoop, and would need a corset or stays to hold the shape of the dress and evenly distribute the weight of it. However, because she absolutely REFUSED to wear any kind of proper supportive garment, they couldn't. They were so worried about making sure Emma Watson was in the movie so they could throw her name around for marketing that they let her get away with pretty much anything.
@@sandravacca5464 it's basically because she believes that those kinds of structural garments (specifically corsets) were "anti-femminist" because of misconceptions that they have harmful effects on women's bodies, and that women were "forced" to wear them when that's largely a myth made by victorian men, as corsets are more similar to bras and like a less intense waist trainers. (and most corsests were tailor made for the person to match their body for the best support for the other clothes not just to make them look skinny)
At the very least they could've put some pattern on top of the fabric to make it look more detailed. Imagine some gold like glitter on top of that yellow in baroque wallpaper patterns in key places. Instantly better. Fixed? No, absolutely not. But it wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb compared to literally all her surroundings.
This is just hearsay, so don't quote me on it, but I think I heard that Belle's gown was supposed to be golden, but it ended up looking yellow due to the limitations of the hand-drawn shading and sheen. So I guess they didn't even bother to go back and ask about the artistic vision of the original film so they could improve upon it without the constraints of hand animation?
@@matthewmitchell3457also clearly didn’t want to invest in getting a legitimate dress that would probably have no issue being designed and made for Disney. Were they truly unable to? Or was it just pure laziness.
but also, historically speaking, Belle's dress should've been way more voluminous than that. It was set in the Rococo era, which had huge ballgowns, so I was pretty sad to see the way smaller dress in the movie
Ok But To Make This Clear, We Aren't Blaming The Actress For This Like She Didn't Make The Dress?? And She Did Say No To Corsets, But That Was Her Prefrenece? The Director Didn't Have To Go Through With Her Opinion And Could've Said That "No, It's Needed Because Of The Time Period".
@SketchYYLegenD She literally has a large hand in the decisions relating to the dress. She specifically said she didnt want to wear a corset or wanted the dress to be long or voluminous. They even considered having her design the whole dress when she complained even though they had one of the greatest designers in the world design every ither outfit. Its not totally her fault, since they gave her free reign iver those decisions, but she still has some of the blame
@SketchYYLegenD I was saying how even though it there is ultimately more fault at the director, she still shouldn't have spoken up about it anyway. It's not her film, and the creative decisions should be left to people whose job is to actually make those decisions. I feel like we would've gotten a better dress and design if she didn't mention anything in the first place
Dude, I'm just trying to figure out why they made the CGI for Halle look so bad. The hell is going on with the scale bra? Why is everything so desaturated? Reminds me of the nightmare sequence from Fiddler on the Roof! The ocean is colorful, not faded!
Emma chose to not wear a corset because she "thought" it would squeeze her, but corsets from the time period belle was in actually served a structural purpose. It was the bone for the dress and it gave it the structure! plus it was comfortable.. EDIT: OMG THANK YOU FOR THE 518 LIKES! (Credits to the moderngurlz youtube channel for this)
Hollywood has a bad reputation with corsets. Between not getting them properly fitted, trying to squeeze down skinny actresses who had nothing to squish instead of paddling them out as was done historically, and the ultimate sin of putting on a corset against bare skin instead of over a chemise, I'm not surprised Emma Watson refused to wear one. However because she didn't wear a corset, she couldn't handle the petticoats needed to give the dress the right length and shape.
Exactly like, the corset is what makes heavy skirts ok to wear since it spreads the weight over the hips instead of all at the waist! But no, Hollywood has to mess up corsets so badly that it’s actually justifiable to not want one from them, which then makes it near impossible to handle the skirt they want. If they had just given her a well-fitting corset that was worn correctly and padded instead of being tight-laced, then she could’ve worn a much fuller skirt and they wouldn’t have had to CGI it. Such a simple answer to most of their problems and they still gotta swerve to solve it in the worst way possible smh
Lily James looked so damn beautiful and that Cinderella gown looked like a dream😭they also did her hair and makeup so perfect and she was actually very happy to play the role. She even wore a very tight corset and I remember her saying she didn’t even drink anything for hours before the ball dance scene so as to not ruin the dress. @Amanda Healey I think they just used color correction or grading in post production; which is done on all films. The director might have wanted it to be darker after seeing the finished shots or for additional contrast. Bringing up (or down) the saturation is done all the time in post production.
Corsets weren't supposed to be restrictive or tight, the costume department should have given her one which actually fit. These actresses who complain that the corset is tight get badly fitted corsets, the costume department should give them ones that fit them , they are the villans not corsets
Also no the costume department isn't the villain they're just workers and follow whatever instructions they're given, sometimes having to make full pieces for the very next day
Exactly, as someone who loves historical fashion it really annoys me how people percieve corsets. Tightlacing wasnt common, it was basically the modern equivalent of wearing shapewear/butt pads/etc. Only reserved for very special occasions/usually only used by very rich fashionable women. Back then, women even wore corsets to work in fields. It actually helped support the back like a back brace does now. The whole thing was used more like a bra than shapewear. So when actresses blindly say "corsets are a symbol of the patriarchy" and refuse to wear them on set, thats like refusing to wear a bra. A lot of womens fashion/beauty practices can be traced back to "the patriarchy", but like... emma watson still wore makeup, a dress, heels, had her hair done, etc. So why are corsets the big issue?
@André Coelho then they should have just said that they were going to make a comfortable one. It’s hardly her fault that she didn’t want to be laced up so tightly that she couldn’t breathe, and that they never explained to her that they could (and should, anyway) just make a perfectly wearable and non-torturous corset.
@@kateprice7417 probably because they laced Lily James up so tightly that she couldn’t breathe, so Emma was very clear that she was having none of that? And so instead of making her a decent, properly-fitting corseted dress ig they just didn’t bother explaining to her that that was an option and instead ran with the “no-corset” thing as a publicity stunt
The dress in Cinderella was made of so many different layers with subtle color shifts I think dusted with glitter. The post production was just touch ups and some adjustments in saturation, sparkle, and luminance. It was supposed to be a magical dress.
It's funny because the myth about dangerous corsets literally came from male reporters/writers who didn't realize (or just purposely tried to spread misinformation to shame women) that the hourglass silhouette was made from padding, and not from women tightlacing their corsetry. Of course Watson couldn't wear the petticoat/extra layers, because the corsetry would've provided support to her torso to combat the weight of the fabrics. She tried to support women in history by believing the misinformation spread to shame women and remove the support in their fashions.
Granted I’m not a skilled actor nor am I educated in fashion. But I wore a corset under my wedding dress (and it was put on me by a professional) and that shit HURT (they even slightly loosened it for me and it was still painful). It was very hard to breathe and even after they took it off my torso felt out of place for hours. Maybe other women have had better experiences but I personally hated it and can understand why someone would decline to wear it.
@@PumpkinMozie Was it fitted to you properly? If it was a random one you bought for the day, it wouldn't work. You would have needed one with your measurements in mind. As well, you shouldn't wear it skin to skin. You would have something underneath it like a stay usually. But the main reason women have issues with corsets, is wearing one that isn't made for YOUR body.
As a person who wears a properly fitted corset, doesn't tight lace, and also has layering underneath it- corsets can be uncomfortable. Especially when you're wearing them and you're doing a lot of physical activity as well. Not only that, but she had to ride a literal horse, and that was a lot of the reason for the design of the dress.
@@PumpkinMozie I agree with the other people was it made to your size? Just as a historical re-enactor my corsets and stays are made specifically for me because they are different to modern ones and they are never tight-laced and it's really just like wearing a bra combined with a vest that extends to your hips in a way, it's never caused me pain.
For Cinderella they made 8 versions of the blue dress for filming different scenes. Some were shorter for running, others were longer and poofier. I think they used like 250 meters of fabric
And all this effort it shows, the final result is impeccable! Belle have one of the most iconic Disney dresses and the live action totally botched cause Emma Watson couldn’t be bothered doing her research about corsets but hey, Belle is a “bookish girl” and she was trying to keep it real to what the character would… by making a totally uninformed decision.

I always assumed that the difference in Cinderella's dress was just due to the color grading the film went through in post rather than CGI. If you look at the BTS of the ballroom sets, they also were far less saturated than in the actual film.
Cinderella had a surprising amount of real stuff they used in the movie, most of the cgi was limited to the transformation and fairy godmother segments and some of the animals although many were real. It’s very impressive the amount of work they put into the movie if you gm watched the behind the scenes
Beauty and the Beast is a perfect example of why actors should just stick to what they do and know best; acting, and not involve themselves in costume design etc. There’s a reason they hire people for that and not let the actors decide lmao
it doesn’t say anywhere that it was her choice to have the dress like that. actors very rarely get a say in what they wear and often have their opinions heard last or not at all. it was likely the costume artists and directors.
@v Emma Watson directly said that she had a direct say in the dress, and that she felt like Belle should have a more functional dress than the one in the movie. That's why they made her dress the way that it was.
@@angelettejones8882 not really she said it should be functional but also still similar as nostalgic as the actual dress. Maybe it was a corner cutting method. Because SURELY there are other techniques to make that dress fuller.
The Gold Gown has been replicated SO MANY TIMES, Broadway, the parks not to mention dozens of cosplayers it wasn't like they had to design it from scratch, It was more about Emma being 'Not like other girls' over cost cutting
The reality is probably a combination. - You can't support super full skirts without a support garment (stays/corset). - they let Watson dictate most things about her costumes without a scrap of research done (otherwise we would have had no wanna-be-combat-boots, lack of stays, visible drawers, lack of sleeves, pockets worn on the outside, etc.) - what you've mentioned about unions in film too. But by doong that they just wasted a lot of money imo. They already showed they were capable of making a glorious non cgi dress woth a big skirt, why not doing it again?
i believe the reason is that Emma didnt want to use a corset. A heavier dress needs a corset to keep the weight well distributed through the body, thats the main reason people wore corsets and stays, to hold the clothes and support the body. But todays perception of corsets is that theyre mainly to look skinnier and therefore an oppresive tool, which made it so Emma and Disney wanted to stay away from them to propel their feminist-Bella vision. A damn shame in my mind, since corsets dont have to be anti feminists and have a pretty long story of being actually hated by men themselves because corsetry was a female dominated industry that allowed independency to women
@@EvaLoVerde yes petticoats and criolines give fullness to skirts, but those are usually attached to the corset, so the weight gets evenly distributed allowing for bigger and heavier skirts, like imagine holding a heavy bag in one of your shoulder vs two, you could hold a big skirt with only your hips or use your back and abs muscles too. Not only that the corset offers support to those same muscles by keeping a right posture and supports breast tissue like a bra.
A corset is essentially a backbrace that; as @Macarena mentions, distributes the weight of the skirts and underskirts. All while providing bust and back support. Corsets are still used for certain spine problems and are excellent for very large busted women.
Belle's live action dress was an insult to the original animation, wherein the dress was the CENTER PIECE during the ballroom dance. Knowing CGI was added in it, is just straight up embarrassing.
The fact that Emma refused to wear appropriate clothing because she thought it was oppressive to women lol. Supposedly a feminist but still fell for misinformation spread by men of that time.
The only reason they had to do so much cgi to belle was bc Emma Watson refused to wear corsets. You have to have some sort of supportive undergarment in order to be able to wear a huge full skirt and pettycoat
What was her damn problem? I wore a corset for ten hours a day working at a Dicken's Faire for years and it was one of the most comfortable things ever. Get a properly fitted corset and you will never have back pain. If you are doing a period piece you need to dress for the period!
this is why i prefer musical theatre. although it has a limited amount of what we can do live, we actually have to do everything ourselves, so we’re actually acting in the story, not in a set surrounded by cgi
Yes! Thank you! And let me also add, if you're cast in a musical, you damn well better be able to SING, not try to fall back on that autotune nonsense!
@@droth1031That was one of my biggest problems with Beauty and the Beast. Emma sounded like a Vocaloid, and not even a particularly well-tuned one. Compare that to Halle, who played around with the original performance and barely used any. The remake of The Little Mermaid was mid, but the music was leagues better. (Except for Scuttle. I nearly left the theater.)
Emma Watson was just plain ridiculous about costuming, period. Don't take these kind of roles if you don't want to deal with the clothing required of it. She didn't want the full skirt, didn't want the petticoats, complained about corsets, ugh. A properly fitted corset is _comfortable._ It provides support not unlike a compression garment. But yeah let's keep spreading corset slander, em.
@@_-Tomaru-_ okay okay okay, I know what you’re saying and I agree. It isn’t for everyone and they should have choice in the matter. But Emma Watson said in an interview that the reason why she didn’t wear a corset was because she wanted to get across that bell was a more “Feminist” icon, or something along that line, pretty much using feminism as the reason she didn’t wear one.
Gosh I love her being excited she got the part after Harry Potter but she sounds well kinda demanding, ugh the dress was such a disappointment I didn’t kno it was because of her. I’m surprised they let her make such changes but I guess she is the star of the movie
And that's why a corset is important for large dresses like that. Emma refused to wear a corset even though they were made to help a woman with the weight if her dress back then. Hence, the shorter skirt and lack of a petticoat.
People rlly don’t perceive corsets in a positive light. Back then when people wore corsets, the corsets were tailored and fitted to each customer. Nowadays if you buy a corset on like Amazon, it’ll probably be uncomfortable bc it needs to be tailored to YOUR body. And when the corset is made right, then it’s rlly comfortable. @@salteadog33 I doubt that she will ever want children, she has every right to refuse such fate. She’s a career woman, and that’s incredible. But if she wants kids that’s perfectly fine too. It’s not other peoples’ business. Stop making assumptions based of her gender.
@@salteadog33 No, She didn’t want to wear a corset due to its restrictiveness, and she did not want to wear a full gown because she was worried about tripping As I mentioned above, I even put on the full length gown to show her that there was no chance of tripping, but that was still not good enough
@@CrystalChrysanthemum there's a reason why it looks stupid and disgusting. Celebrities have weird preference. I went from disliking Emma (because of the nonsense about corset) and dress to outright hating it and Emma when I learned SHE designed it. She overstepped. She's an actress, not a designer, and the ugly dress is the proof of that.
her not wanting to wear the corset is actually probably the reason they couldn’t use the main dress because one of the main jobs of corsets it to take weight off the hips. those skirts get heavy after all that layering and so corsets were designed to make it easier. something completely necessary for the fucking ballgown and NOT RESTRICTIVE OR ANTI-FEMINIST.
the main thing is she refused to wear a corset. a corset would be essential to distributing the weight of the skirt and protecting her body from all the layers.
@@nospoonfulofmayonnaiseformeRiiiiiiight. Now you say this I remember that! Pffff she's edgy and feminist when it's uncalled for and conformist when she shouldn't be. She irks me the wrong way even though I loved her in the beginning of her carreer. Maybe a bad entourage influencing her?
Emma Watson was the most ENTITLED Disney "princess" EVER. She made everyone bow down to her demands, saying it was "feminism", yet ALL THE OTHER FEMALE CAST HAD TO WEAR CORSETS, PETTICOATS, HEAVIER DRESSES, etc.
Halle Bailey actually wore two corsets. There is the one with Ariel’s undergarments, and the outer one over the dress. Emma Watson is a just pain to work with. It is why she has been essentially blacklisted from Hollywood. No one wants to deal with her diva behavior anymore, because she does not have the talent to back it up.
@@artieche9 why she has no talent. Lol Halle is new to the acting scene more or less so i can give a break on bad acting. I still think she was wrong for the role of Ariel. But apparently she actually wore the proper costumes for the time era in human form. So credit for that. I still hate live actions except Cinderella 2015. Thats the only good one.
Cinderellas original color dress is so amazing! I wish they would leave it like that. A perfect representation of the original silver dress and the blue dress
The "real" Belle dress was that ridiculously heavy contraption in The King And I's dance scene. Yet Deborah Kerr managed to pull it off like a boss. That's real female empowerment to me.
Oh, you are so right! And it wasn't even a waltz, she was hopping and twirling HARD in a very energetic polka! Now I am going to have "Shall We Dance" stuck in my head all night, lol
I respect Emma for not wanting to dance/work in a full ball gown.. but indian actresses, for example Deepika Padukone wore a lehenga ( dress ) that was 30kg and danced Garba, which is one of the most athletic dance form. This was in the movie Ram-Leela for a song “Nagada Sang Dhol”
People often forget that Cinderella didn't have a blue ball gown in the original, it was silver. Also, sleeping beauty had a blue dress originally, not pink. Seems like the way they're dressed in Disney princess advertisements has taken over the way people remember them tho.
The thing is they can’t sell sliver dress or it will look like a wedding dress so they had to make it blue so they had to market Aroura in pink so should wouldn’t get confused with Cinderella
They gave up after Cinderella 🤣 they won't even say how much her gown cost, there are estimates for over 27,000, and the yards of fabric were in the hundreds. The amount of thread in the miles. And there were several versions 👀
@@BreMue you drunk...lion King better, jungle book better and oh look highest grossing one beauty and the beast better 1.2 billion it's a better time than cinderella arguably so is Aladin
If Emma weren’t so insufferable about wearing period-accurate costumes, the cgi team wouldn’t have had to do that much with the dang dress!.. Also, Hollywood - instead of banning corsetry in historical dramas, how about we actually put in the effort to have actresses fitted for a proper corset/pair of stays.
I can understand mermaid tails and colors needing to be CGI'ed, but what happened with Belle's dress was straight up unforgivable. This is why you should cast relatively new/unknown faces in classic roles, instead of big stars.
Everyone complaining about Belles CGI dress Me: Dang those turtles can MOVE, the coordination those people had all crouched down like that, I could never✋✋
You can actually wear fuller and longer dresses even without a corset or stays, the issue here is the costuming itself they tried to make Belle's dress look different to Cinderella's so they tried different silhouettes and different fabrics and it turned out horrible.
I still can't believe Lily James' wait is so small, I mean, we have seen it in other outfits and it is super tiny but with the puff of the dress and her corset it's just insane, even digitally colored that dress was gorgeous
I think she does have a very small waist but this is emphasized by a) they tight-laced her into the corset (unfortunately) b) the huge skirt and puffy bodice make it look smaller proportionately. it's the magic of the victorian era.
I will never forgive Emma Watson for ruining the Belle dress because of her unwillingness to wear a corset or have a proper Belle ballgown. It could have been so different if she had known the true history behind corsets and ballgowns.
Bruh, it’s not just her. They could have worked around her boundary. That’s their job. People just want to find one single person to shift blame to. It’s a lot of moving parts.
I think overall she was not the best actress for this role. The dress/corset situation was minor.......I LOVED her in the Harry Potter movies but outside of that her acting was not impressive at all.
She didn't ruin it. We can always look back at the original Disney version. We can watch different live action movies based on the same fairytale. One bad version of Belle's dress does not ruin it forever.
Most people don't understand how the corseted silhouette works physically. If a woman is heavier, she has more fat to be pushed into the desired position and has to wear less padding to make things look right. If a woman has very little fat, like most modern actresses, there is just nothing there to push and any attempt to do so will only hurt. I believe this is why actresses so often complain about pain from stays and corsets. For a thin woman, the corset should only be a foundation and added padding should be creating most of the shape. On top of this, corsets are not made to be worn on top of bare skin and should always be worn over a comfortable thin underlayer, and preferably also a thin overlayer to protect the dress. The structural garment directly on the skin is also a likely contributor to the actress's discomfort. The lesson is to always research structure and always wear all your undergarments, even if they will never be seen.
Yes, in historical times, skinny women put padding on the top and bottom of the corset to create a curvy shape, where as women with more fat on the stomach would tighted inwards to create the "ideal" shape.
