Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow video game review of the arcade version of Rastan, as played on Taito Legends for the PlayStation 2 (also available for PC or Xbox). Clearly inspired by Conan the Barbarian, Rastan (aka Rastan Saga) is a sidescrolling hack and slash platformer that was released to arcades in 1987. You'll fight a variety of mythical monsters and travel through various landscapes in search of an ultimate treasure. This is a tale of high adventure! This review features Rastan gameplay footage and commentary from CGRundertow reviewer Kevin.

This was my first definitive arcade game ever. Sure there were the pacmans and galagas, but to me, this game was ahead of its time back then and totally has a special place in my heart. Totally love its atmosphere and gameplay. Worth feeding every token until you're bum broke. This is one of the classics that deserve a revival.

Have you tried Volgarr the Viking? It's a love letter to Rastan and games of this type. One of the best games I've played in recent years.

The rod makes it so that every time you kill an enemy, all enemies of that type on screen die too.

Back in the day, I played this more on the Commodore 64 then the arcade. Simply because I could not pump enough quarters into the machine for it's demanding challenge levels. The home port was a decent attempt. The game was at it's best with that rare flame throwing sword. Very memorable.

Way back in the way back machine I played this at the bowling alley and it had a glitch. A moving platform would go off screen and never come back. Happened to us all, so I never saw the game past that point.

@NWNisFUN The arcade controls were stiff. To swing the sword, meant going through the swinging action. And, most weapons only had X amount of pixel range to hit the enemies in. Some foes even took a blow or two. At least, Rastan could take a few hits, unlike other challenging games. (Arthur and his Ghosts/Goblins...*cough, cough.*)
