In this video, John Jackson, DipWSET a/k/a Attorney Somm discusses a special vertical wine tasting of 12 outstanding vintages of Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou and reveals 8 takeaways for wine collectors. Many of these wine collecting takeaways apply generally to Bordeaux and not only to Ducru-Beaucaillou. The Ducru-Beaucaillou Bordeaux wines involved in the tasting include the following vintages: 1982, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2005.
Thank you to my good friend @winelineup from IG for organizing and hosting this special wine tasting! Please give him a follow!

Enjoying this today! You know, if I were to create a list of top favorite YT videos of 2023, this retrospective tasting (of many of Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou's best vintages from the past 40 years) would be one of my best-loved favorites. It’s that good! Superb assessments, astute comparative analysis, excellent insights, expert conclusions including your “top two”, and great recommendations especially for Bordeaux collectors. Very much enjoyed and appreciated the key takeaways you enumerated and explained with clarity, precision, and authoritative expertise. Also love your social media integration on this one. What an epic tasting, and an epic video as well. Thank you for always churning out the most brilliant content on YT and other platforms. Santé, John!

1988 to 1990 was a rough period for taint at Ducru, I'm wondering if any of those were reconditioned ex-chateau. Ducru is one of my favorite Bordeaux, and it has reached new heights in the past 20 years. The 2014 Ducru is outstanding in that classic, underrated vintage.

@@AttorneySomm My experience has been between 10-20 years is the optimal age for anything other than first growths (which I've never had the opportunity to try). I haven't had very many aged Bordeaux wines, but I have generally found the 2nd and 3rd growth wines from the 2009 and more recent have been more consistently impressive than any of the aged wines I've had.

Wow, what a tasting. I’m the most wine-obsessed person I know, but I feel like a complete novice sometimes compared to your experience! Previously you’ve encouraged me to start or join a tasting group, which is great advice and I hope to do that someday to make tastings such as this possible. Unfortunately it’s a tough stage of my life to do such things; kids’ activities control my calendar.

Chapeau! What an amazing review of this memorable tasting of the best vintages ‘80 and ‘9O of one of the most distinctive, elegant and irresistible Château in Bordeaux. (IMHO) While I watched the video I was imagining that it was like being in a lab observing many factors to get an accurate result after so many surgical strategies. The most important one: to be objective to fairly declare a winner of 12 impecable vintages. (Not easy at all) And not east to put all these in words either. I really appreciate you share this incomparable video so well edited and full of treasurable content. I have found that some palates are repellant to this Chateau and I seriously wonder why?! The 2000 vintages are doing extremely well despite the excessive warm weather. Here is when the skills of the team and admirable winemaker give the character of the vintage. Fresh and attractive wines that take our breath away. Being able to drink now or in years to come. The amount of tannins is a constant as we all know. If I analyze the ‘80 and ‘90 I’ll find, as you well say, that they’ll open slowly but when they do one can’t deal with so much in a glass. The winemaker surprises me deeply when combining the vintage and terroir plus its intriguing methods that keep the constan freshness and restraint, printing Ducru signature forever. The tip about how to get these bottles is prescindible too! And to know which one was the winner is a pleasant respectable news! What a fun deep tasting John! Santé.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful response and for the support, Gabriela! Truly appreciate it! You make many good points. @ronmcmartin4513 Год назад
@@AttorneySomm--"lower acidity" ...Surprising in the context of the 2005 vintage. I think of 2000s as a "complete" vintage(everything in place, hitting on all cylinders, etc.). Best 2005s need 5 years. Good lesser Growths, drink up. 2005 is "fresher", but not as Complete as 2000. Except for the best 2000 long-termers(Latour, La Mission, etc), drink now. I wouldn't buy older than 2009, and fill in with 2011-14, rather than 2006-08. That's just me.
@AttorneySomm
@AttorneySomm Год назад
@@ronmcmartin4513 Thanks for weighing in. It is possible that this 05 will improve with more age. Again, it was an enjoyable wine - I just preferred the others in the lineup on this night. The top 3 were head and shoulders above the rest. And the bottom 3 were also pretty clear. The middle was harder to sort out. By itself I would probably enjoy the 05 and have a much higher opinion. But in the context of this comparison tasting, it did not show well.
@ronmcmartin4513
@ronmcmartin4513 Год назад
@@AttorneySomm --We've discussed 2005s before, and how it's like the acidic 1995s, just not as austere(Suckling & his Italian palette loved the 95s). 1986s & 88s were always too tannic for me, so I preferred the 1985s & 89s.

@AttorneySomm
@AttorneySomm 6 месяцев назад
For the 1992, it does not really need any air. Ideally you would just stand it upright 4-5 days before and then be careful not to include sediment from the bottom when pouring it. Alternatively, I would pour it directly into the glass with a strainer. The 2000 we poured into the decanter for an hour and it was in great shape after that.
