Word to the wise. NEVER doze off into an afternoon nap listening to Nightmind. Nick's voice is like smooth, smoky butter but you WILL bolt up, half away, thinking you're going to get eaten by every shadow in your room. My dog jumped onto my bed and I swear my skeleton almost leapt out of my body.
As someone who actually does experiences hallucinations, this is a terrifying analogy to the downward spiral untreated hallucinations can take you down
strange question but ive always been curious as a paranoid and anxiety ridden person do those emotional states effect the hallucinations content or just there frequency?
@@wilmagregg3131 i can really only speak from my experiences, but I find that my hallucinations become louder (they're auditory hallucinations) and more frequent during times of emotional or psychological distress. As for content, I do tend to hear more frightening things when I'm in duress compared to when I'm not. For example, when my step grandfather died shortly after my mother disowned me, I would hear what sounded like the screaming of someone being tortured or voices telling me I was going to die next, but my baseline hallucinations are people saying my name or trying to tell me things that I don't understand
Nick, I recently suffered an ear injury that's resulted in severe tinnitus. Listening to most of your videos offers huge relief. I know that's not why your awesome channel exists but I thank you wholeheartedly anyway!
Unfiction is one of the only genres that make me feel uneasy in a good way. Something about the nostalgia and liminal atmosphere just captivate my creative senses.
@@i_am_squishy6230 something that exists as fictional in our reality, but its considered nonfictional in the reality the media is from. a lot of analog horror is unfiction, but the example i can immediately think of is local 58.
Hmmm.. Although I love CH/SS, I think Kraina Grzýbow should be acknowledged as the first analog horror series. I don't think KG inspired Turkey to create CH/SS but the first KG episode was posted in 2013. Both are unique and made me spend many hours doing research and have a place in my heart.
I don't feel like KG is analog horror per se, however it's a damn good ARG-horror story by itself. KG is more like Daisy Brown in a sense that it tells you a story by it's characters while analog horrors tell the stories more by telling about one huge threat in video format
It’s older than that. The first would be Look Around You, a comedy series from 2003ish but has that feeling of dread throughout. It’s not even a laugh out loud comedy, it’s a weird one, and our little minds didn’t know that we were discovering the birth of a new genre :)
To me, the whole story of CH/SS feels sad and tragic instead of scary. I still wonder why did the deer creature, aka Katia, continued to hurt people, even after the collapse of Soviet Union. Can’t think of any other reason except for being trained to do that and wanting for some revenge. Also, as a person who’s interested in history of Soviet Union and who lives in a country that was once known as LSSR, it’s really cool to see that the first YT analogue series was connected to USSR!
Off-setting the late night creep factor slightly by knitting a hat while watching. Edit: Note, this is a bad idea - Nick’s voice is too soothing, I started to nod off and almost put out both my eyes on my knitting needles. Also, I find it weirdly hilarious that the horrible cryptid could only speak in Russian at first. Considering the last video I saw before this one was of some Russian guys hand-feeding a wild polar bear, I could see them teaching a nightmare deer to speak, yeah.
Honestly, with any horror story that has some creature that's supposed to be similar to a real animal (in, this case a deer or moose), I always like to think that. Besides the obvious or pointed out differences, it still kinda acts like that animal. Like, you leave out a bag of bird seeds or corn or something, and in the morning you wakeup and see this demonic looking deer-thing just, kinda chilling. Munching on some corn. Not really bothering you (assuming you're not the unfortunate souls that it's going after). Dunno if that actually applies here but, I think it's funny to think about. Anyways, great video man, keep up the awesome work. :D
I have a story idea that I've been working on for a while where this family adopts a hellhound, and the humor comes from that sort of thing- it's a demonic entity, but it's also a Big Puppy with Big Puppy Energy.
Interestingly I've had a somewhat similar idea while watching the video. I thought that it would be fun if there was an unfiction series where amid some other trouble the characters notice that there's a strange creature stalking the area around their house (it wouldn't be their main concern, but rather an another problem to deal with, kinda like the Rake in EverymanHybrid), but over the course of days or weeks they slowly realise that it's not really hostile. Ideally it would end with a tweet announcing that one of the characters decided to leave some salmon out for it, accompanied by a blurry photo of said creature peacefully eating outside.
"We have a Class:C anomolous entity on our hands" My brain: "We have a classy anomolous enitity on our hands" The entity: Mighty fine day aint it chap?
I've been on a bit of a Monument Mythos kick myself, was wondering if Nick was going to cover it or something else Analog soon. Pleasantly surprised to see an old favorite back on the channel.
I second Nick covering the Monument Mythos series… probably just the first season at the moment and then the second once that ends along with any theories about any loose ends that were still hanging around
I'm always amazed at the odd feeling of comfort I get when a story involves the Russians and particularly the Cold War. I guess despite the genuine fear I felt at a child in the 1980s because of them, it's just so familiar and I know how to feel.
As a zoomer, I don't think that I have any baseline for what it would be like living during the Cold War -- yet so many people that I know have. I think my generation has accepted that the world will end because of human stupidity or whatever and grieves in its way, but I don't think I'll ever get the immediacy, the feeling people had that any moment could be _the_ moment. As fascinated as I am by the Cold War, people's memories of it, and the media about it, I really hope I never have to know.
@@fruitygarlic3601I remember watching the Berlin Wall coming down on TV in elementary school. “Commie” was still a casual insult tossed around. By the year 2000, that was all over. Where Ronald Reagan and Rambo helped the God-fearing Taliban fight the godless Russian invaders, America’s sails were shifted completely by 9/11. JNCOS were replaced with skinny jeans.
My reading on how the antler creature came to be is that it was indeed some sort of creature created by the Soviet Union, but as it was entirely loyal to them, it was probably a member of the party who really did want to do what they could to overthrow the American government. However, once CH/SS was created, the mission was changed to first taking out CH/SS, and then returning to attacking US officials and whatnot. But I believe some time in the late 80’s, the antlered creature was killed, but left behind a human widow, as the creature was formerly human itself. The widow was so distraught she begged the Soviets to let her take his place so she could have revenge, but they either declined, or collapsed before they could go through with it. However, many years later, either the Russian Federation renewed the program or the program was recreated by some sort of shoddy group of scientists, and the widow was unleashed in 2016 so she could finally have her revenge. And the widow is Kadia.
Something else I think they did amazingly, is they were able to take what others did before and make it their own. Listening to this, I got strong Marble Hornets and SCP feelings, yet everything about CH/SS was original. This was truly amazing work, and the creator should feel proud of themself. Not just for this series, but in a way, starting a whole subgenre of unfiction. 💜💜💜
9:51 I'd like to point out once again (I vaguely remember making the same point several yrs ago here on Night Mind) that прославленные лицемеры is not semantically identical to 'glorified hypocrites'. Russian phrase sounds unnatural and looks like a backwards translation from English. To put it simply, 'glorified hypocrites' is probably the intended meaning, but whoever put this text in the video most likely didn't speak Russian. If you're making ARG or any creative project and intend to use Russian, please note that online-translation for Russian language if still far from perfection. It'd be more reliable to find a Russian person and ask them to translate a phrase or two; there are a lot of us Russians on the internet, a lot of us know English and interested in ARGs and such. Try r/russian, for example. Or maybe I can help. Good luck!
oh my god, i was thinking the exact same thing! i immediately knew it wasn't a russian person's work when they said "глядя на неприятности?" and translated it as "looking for trouble?". the actual meaning of the phrase would be something like "...while looking at trouble?" and the correct russian translation of the english phrase would sound more like "ищешь/ищете нериятности?". at least contact a person who actually speaks the language when making your arg, man!
I’m going to admit something. I’m a scaredy-cat and can’t watch the series you cover myself. I love the hidden lore aspects but I’ve never been much for horror. Thanks!
I've been on a Mandela Catalogue theory deep dive and when I saw that phone number pop up for the Psychological Survey Initiative I gasped. It's SO similar to the one the USDTP in Mandela uses to request people call with questions about the "television and mirror destruction order". The USDTP number is identical except the last four digits are 0156. The time frame of the late eighties, the DC location, the plague of mental health issues, and the increase of suspicious people/distortion/hallucinations brought on by strange, otherworldly presences, makes me wonder if Mandela is supposed to be connected to CH/SS
@@katpaddywhackgiveadogabone9188 I think it is a nice Easter egg but I would be interested in seeing if there’s more connections and seeing theorists get together to put together wild theories about how they might be connected
Well The first 3 are the same because both are implied to be u.s. government agencies so it'd make sense for them to have washington d.c. area codes. The next three digits are the same because putting 555 in your phone number guarantees it's fake, and that way you don't have to worry about some random person getting called cause of your project
I would like to see Night Mind do a deep dive into the Inscryption game as it starts as a deck-building video game, but then after you beat it for the first time the game adds in some unfiction via in-game videos and ARG mechanics leading you into doing other versions of the game as you play it. It should be interesting.
Would love to see that too, the lore is insane, going from 'within the game itself' to 'several old Daniel Mullins demos that never got full releases' even all the way to 'World War II and one of the first ever recorded card games in history from the 1500s'.
Well damn, so I am missing out again! Damndable depression keeping me from gaming. Thanks for letting me know that Inscryption might be worth pushing through to play!
Inscryption is a good game that surprisingly catches you off guard with its true premise, but there's already tons of people explaining, decoding, and investigating it Edit: oh wait this is a month old thread haha
Omg. I remember watching this after you made your initial video on this years ago. I haven't watched the video yet but now I know what you meant when you said in your recent livestream that if I miss you explaining things, I'm going to like your next video. I always remembered this series as the one where an evil moose (because moose have antlers) broke into their headquarters and they acted as if it was a hallucination because they thought if the public knew it would make their pharmaceutical company look bad. Obviously that is an exaggerated joke, but it's a humorous way I remember this series existence.
I know you probably won't see this NM, but i love the content! I've been fallowing along on this amazing channel along with Nexpo and others for years and it's been so worth it!
Is it just me that feels like this is *everything* the Wyoming Incident wishes it had been or *should* have been? It's genius. And having stumbled upon your channel by looking into the Wyoming Incident, this feels like my first Night Mind experience as a follower - the first major upload since I subscribed. You're awesome, Nick. Side note: I've never heard a voice that can simultaneously be so soothing, and yet when you want it to be - like reading Roy Spencer's tweets - so terrifying as yours.
It is criminal how few subscribers Turkey Lenin III has, their content is truly amazing. It is the only analog horror content creator whose work actually scares me.
This is the first and only series of anolog horror which I watched, analysed and annotated myself to draw my own conclusion without watching someone else's explanation. I remember sitting down, watching the videos and rewatching them frame by frame to pick every minor thing up. Great video, I missed a lot
Y'know, Analog Horror is kind of like the Man Vs. Monster craze that started around the time Night Mind started. Every web series online featured a protagonist going up against a monster, typically with a found-footage style and light ARG elements. I'd argue CH/SS bridges the gap between the online horror of old and new. It's the perfect blend of Man Vs. Monster and Analog Horror, hitting a lot of the tropes of both and letting the two styles play off of each other.
It's interesting how tonally different this is from most current analog horror. This reminds me far more of NOC+10 in the sense that it's immediately establishing a cohesive, singular narrative. Most analog horror is created to be more like self-contained shorts that fit together in a unified setting. There might be a meta-narrative, but it doesn't have a traditional Three Act structure. Watching this series back, it made me realize what makes analog horror effective specifically for me: the fact that they are taped broadcasts of things at least somewhat reminiscent of things I could have watched when it was actually aired. CH/SS, as a result, isn't quite as effective for me as a horror project, but it still is a very clever and tightly written story that I appreciate all the same. Watching CH/SS feels more like I'm watching someone's dirty secrets instead. A different appeal to be sure, but the horror gets lost somewhere for me.
people talking about how soothing nightmind's voice is and I cannot help but agree! Never would I thought falling esleep while listening to a horror video lmao. The analog isn't actually scary like Mandela Catalogue but it is very engaging.
Awesome story. I think Night Mind will always be my favourite channel. I like real life mysteries too, but online unfiction is my favourite. And I have yet to find a channel which presents and celebrates unfiction at the same quality as Night Mind. Good job, Nick. Thanks again for the upload, and I look forward to being part of this channel's journey for the rest of its life.
Hey there! Thanks for mentioning this; I've heard of it before, but didn't know anything about it. Now, spoilers typically abound for these things, and I have no idea how to go about consuming this content without inevitably being spoiled about it. Where can I find this content?
@@RedSpade37 if you want a decent review of it, the mythos isn't fully complete but an up to date video by Wendigoon . He had a 3 hour video going over it.
As someone who has a disorder and part of that disorder comes the fun sometimes never knowing what is real and what isn't. This is the first ARG or even "creepy" stories that's has actually got me spooked. I can admit I'm worried about reality right now.
I missed one of these videos, dude. They're why I subscribed to you in the first place. You find these neat horror stories people have made, and proceed to break them down and explain them well.
YOOOOOO WE'RE BACK! I was going through this series very recently, and i had just gotten up to the "VRX-50 Emitters" vid, but college was rough and i fell out of watching it. glad to have you cover it!!
I enjoyed your original video on the video a ton thank you for reintroducing it to your new audience members, I've been watching since the alantutorial video absolutely excellent work nick I'm so proud of you and how far you have came
I always get excited when I find out that a series featured in these is finished. It means that I wont have to be constantly worried it will never get the ending it deserves, and I'll often times go check it out myself because of that. And don't think I didn't notice what you did to your voice there a couple of times Nick, it was subtle, but worked very well!
I have never jumped on a notification that fast. I’ve been dying for long deep dive video like that one, that’s my favorite format, tank you soooo much !
Aww come on Nockturne, right as I'm headed to bed! I'm gonna dream about listening to your wonderful voice and make that dream come true tomorrow then.
It's so cool to see Wendigoon as big as he is now, he is one of the few channels like this who started and have always put out quality content, so cool to see him as big now even when I started watching him when he was so small
I was pondering to myself "who has the best voice on RU-vid?" and after going through a mental list, 1st place was tied between Nick Nocturne and Atrocity Guide.
I love how this series recognizes the tampering of the footages within its own universe. Makes it feel more realistic when characters in the lore respond to bizarre events as they should
This sounds eerily SCP-esque. Either way its really well made. Concrete story with enough legroom for questions to be posed and for audience interaction to be viable. Very nicely well made.
fINALLY I SEE RECOGNITION FOR THIS ANALOG HORROR, IT WAS LITERALLY MY SECOND ONE FOUND AND I LOVED IT TO BITS FOR THE SUBJECT AND ALLNEIURGHER thank you
"Unfiction"? What is that exactly? I've heard of that term before and I'm curious. I just discovered analog horror and I really love what I found so far. Love your channel
16:14 not to nitpick the writing from the creators, but it would have been much more realistic had they done research and actually named a medication instead of putting “anti-anxiety prescription”. I’ve seen hundreds of medical records and never has a doctor been vague in them and said “the anti-anxiety prescription/medication” in any chart. They would say “patients medication has been increased” or “wrote prescription for (insert medication) for patient today for anxiety, F/O next month to evaluate dosage”. It doesn’t change things in the grand scheme of the story but it also makes them work harder to pick an illness or issue the patient will be dealing with and what medications associated with that illness that were used. It will make the story more real to those who understand the medical field.
I don't know if this channel is run by several different people or just one person but I love the voice at the beginning, I tried watching a video a few years ago and I couldn't stick with it the narrator was to high-pitched and was talking to fast for me to get a grasp on things but this slow deep unnerving voice is perfect for these videos pls keep it up
For a first go at the genre this is incredible. The story, the way it’s communicated, and how the creature works is all great. I especially love that the evil isn’t the corporation because it’s such an easy twist. I also love deer skull creatures (specific, I know) so the descriptions given are really cool to me.
The full conversation goes like so "and you would have let me off so easily." "We finally meet in person" "if I'm guessing correctly I'm either dead or dying, either way you're not going to have me for long" "I'm not here to gloat I've lost this crew game since day one, and I'm standing a chance none of us did not sullivan" "torture me show me" "I know he's still here I know he's still alive somewhere" "he has no part in this you want me not him, you've already taken his father let him go" "what's it going to be"
ch/ss was my first REAL horror series that i actually kept up with. i respect the living hell out of turkey lenin iii for just how talented they are at telling a story -- and you're really right to say that it basically pioneered the entire genre of analogue horror.
What’s really interesting about this series, is it’s one of the few Unfiction ‘creature features’ where you could very easily root for the villain. I know throughout this I certainly sympathized with Katya far more than I did with Roy or Pierce
Man thistook me back to your origins, as in marble hornets, everymanhybrid, tribe 12, human pet, the [number] experiences (can remember how many) and so many others. That you for entertaining us for so many years and hope for many years to come
Finally! I often debate with myself whether or not CH/SS is better than NOC-10 but ultimately I always come to the same conclusion, that they are *both* my favorite webseries
By the way, just my personal opinion, but I loved the "live reaction" style of your Just Acquaintances video. Ever think of doing another one in that style?
Every time i come across a new horror series/ARG/Analogue i come here to see if you have covered it as thats when you know its worth watching lol Plus you ease the fear with your ever so soothing, kind and safe voice We are all safe in the comments with good ol nightmind 💪 Thank you for the video, goodnight and stay safe nick 🙌🏴
Just a remark from russian: “глядя на неприятности?» does not really translate to “looking for trouble?” if only as really direct translation, which missing a wordplay. More fitting would be «напрашиваешься на неприятности?» or «нарываешься на неприятности?». I know it’s just a nitpick to old analog horror, but still worth of noting, imho.
ARGs always have this unique thing about them, probably cause alot of them are filmed to look like they were filmed by old cameras or things like a morbid version of the world with the moon somehow being involved
Whoa this is so creepy! I was just thinking the other day to myself that there aren’t any analogue movies or series out yet and I’ve always been curious as to what people can come up with. It makes me want to start going down that path and trying to make my own short horror films based around this sub genre of horror. Especially during a time where literally every horror movie is a copy of something else these days. I’m tired of modern horror cinema, so to see this is a really refreshing take.
I also would love to start making them because I have some strong ideas. i'm not sure where to start as far as resources, other than my video editing and music knowledge.
@@IKARIking67 What country do you live in? I’m looking for possible actors, directors, editors. I’m from England and I’m already brainstorming a few ideas myself. Would be interesting to talk to someone with similar goals.
I've seen that first video from CH/SS so many times and knew the location was familiar. That was filmed during a demolition project across the street from the Vancouver Art Gallery. Right next to it you can see the reddish "Pendulum Building" and the white building is the Fairmont Hotel
Recently, analog horror has started to become over saturated and generic, to the point where it loses its aspects of horror. So, with that out of the way, I'm glad to see you do a video on the very first analog horror series.
I think it's such an interesting discussion as to why analogue horror has exploded in the last few years. When you think of the market it appeals to, it's kids who know of VHS as a technology from the past, and then people like me who grew up with VHS and CRT's but had all but phased out before the end of childhood. I think it speaks to how so much horror can be distilled down to "old thing we don't understand" or "thing we knew from childhood but creepy". Really cool to see the evolution of horror demonstrating this in real time.
"Глядя на неприятности?" doesn't translate as "Looking for a trouble?". Actually this phrase is incorrect and doesn't make sence. It translates as "while looking on trouble?". The correct phrase will be "Ищешь неприятности?"
It's really fascinating to see the first analog horror series. Thank you for shedding some light and letting the atmosphere seep through in the video. It feels like watching an adult swim ad in the dark. ♥
