Brilliant tribute by a musician who brought out the best in Allan Holdsworth's music and embraced what Allan was saying musically. I think Chad, like Allan has made a far bigger contribution to music than he gets credit for.
What a great speech. A fascinating peek into Holdsworth's world. Wow - I had no idea Chad auditioned for the I.O.U. band!!!! I love Chad, but I also love Gary, and I'll probably get flack for saying this, but I'm glad Chad didn't get selected - to me, Gary is a huge, integral part of the I.O.U. recordings. They wouldn't be the same without Gary. Chad's contributions to later albums stand on their own in their excellence and beauty. We're lucky to have been graced with such a variety of incredible drumming expression across all of Holdsworth's ouvre.
My first experience of Allan's music was the album, "Road Games." Chad was my first Holdsworth drummer and he's remained my favorite Holdsworth drummer over the years.
oh yeah, I remember hearing Tokyo Dream for the very first time on my walkman cassette player on a NYC subway. I wore out that tape as I did Secrets. I had to repurchase a lot of his albums because the tape would fail after traveling and play after play. I would walk into tower records and go straight to the Allan section and if I saw two copies of Secrets I'd grab them immediately. I walked the streets of Manhattan for miles and miles. My belt pouch would be crammed with AA batteries and his albums. As long as I had coffee and batteries, his soundscape became the landscape. such a wonderful life Allan gave to me. I knew one day we would meet and I never stopped thanking him all of the times we hung out after the shows. He called me once and I heard my own music playing in the background from his home. His sound is now out there after leaving our orbit and so are my tears.
@@joerose6945 It's hard to feel like I exist in this post Allan state. It's like we're permanently stranded on planet Earth. I have his albums and his signature guitars but my scopes have gone dark.
@@joerose6945 I feel like my Carvin and Kiesel guitars need to be in a museum. I feel like a curator now. All of his albums, rare magazines , signature guitars, and signature pedals that I have are now artifacts that I'm afraid to break.
Allan was really original, one of few musicians that you immediatly recognize. Like Glenn Gould och Jascha Heifetz. I was fortunate to see him play live 5 times and actually shared a pint once after a gig. Miss him so much, but we will always have the recordings. Such a humble and nice person.
Very inspiring to hear Mr. Wackerman talk about Mr. Holdsworth and his music. I've nothing but love and respect for these folks. Thanks for the post!!!
The quote about Coltrane is incredibly spot on. I read an interview with Allan and John McLaughlin where John said that when he heard Allan the first time he thought he was influenced by Coltrane and Cecil Taylor and Allan said thanks and that that was pretty much what he was going for at the time
What a lovely tribute to the most original guitarist of our age. I didn't know about Frank letting him use the studio on Road Games. I listen to both of them daily.
Great Tribute ! I think appreciation for Allan's music will grow in time.. Sometimes it takes a while for the masses to catch up.. To appreciate real genius !
And the best thing that happened is Allan was playing violin in the beginning. This was the best training for his unbelievable skill of tone building! Here Tempest I and Velvet Darkness from Allan!
My Mouth is on the floor I took my Son to see Allan and Chad and Jimmy were there Denton Tx I had no idea Frank let them do road games for 10 days borrow the place im completely speechless and that never happens. I carried Chads drums that night to the van because those guys came to Texas to play for us in Denton Tx and I could not let them load gear not on my watch.. Allan handed me his Delap that night after the show and no I did not play a note that night I was not a guitar player I was in fucking awe and I got Allan's Bags and Chads and helped load Jimmy's gear also... I was so in the moment I forgot to ask Chad about Frank im an idiot but this video just told me everything. I saw Frank close the Armadillo down in Austin and then 2 years later with Chad on Drums and Robert Martin was with the band.. I carry bags and gear when the pros came to town.. Same holds true for the Grandmothers and I carried Don Prestons moog.. I know what your all thinking did he shoot 6 shots or only 5.. Ike Willis you still owe me 3500 dont be going and doing me dat ways...
