An Australian Army research film produced by the Military History Cinema Section and directed by G Armoured Corps on behalf of the War Office. This film was photographed during trials of the American M-24 General Chaffee Light Tank and provides a graphic illustration of the facts submitted in a report to the War Office. The tests included driving through swamp and undergrowth, steering continuously for 4 hours in low gear, mud trials along a 200 yard track with a Matilda tank used as a comparison. Recovery of a bogged Matilda tank by two M24 Chaffee tanks using a snatch block. Trench and creek crossing. Climbing trials. Armament test on Japanese style bunker using 75mm (HE) High Explosive with super quick fuse and delay fuse. Landing trials from a ALC 40 landing craft and subsequent trials negotiating the sand banks and turning on beach sand.

It certainly shows the need for good recon when using tracked vehicles in a jungle environment to avoid impassible obstacals. It would seem that tanks in very difficult terrain should operate in groups of at least three. A lead tank followed by a tank to perform a rapid extraction if the lead is stuck. The third tank would provide covering shell and machine gun fire during the extraction.

I kind of love the Caffee. As the war's start the Americans have to make the M3 because they can't make a turret big enough for a 75mm gun. By war's end it's the main gun of the light tank!

The M24 was really a great tank to use in the Pacific theatre against the Japanese. In Europe, obviously not so much. But, with a big gun, speed and acceptable armor protection it could drive rings around anything the Japanese could field. And more of them could be shipped than Shermans. Unfortunately, it came along too late in the war contribute too much.

Australia has jungle?
@Teh_Monk
@Teh_Monk 4 года назад
Virtually all of the land around them (in neighboring countries/territories) is jungle-like terrain. They fought in lots of those places during WW2, so it probably made perfect sense to test them in those environments since future wars might also be fought there. Plus, if the tank can handle jungle, then it can handle most, if not all, of Australia.

Ask anyone who has served in the ADF or deployed to train with the ADF about Tully jungle warfare center, it has prepared service personnel for the worst jungle environments because it is a tropical hell, humid, hot with a wet season that is torrential and relentless with cold wet nights and hellishly thick jungle filled with not only animals that can kill you, but plants that will also take their piece of flesh. From WW2 to Vietnam and even now, countless soldiers have laid in a slit trench in torrential rain with ticks, leeches, scorpions and snakes trying to share your dry spot and body warmth at night. I did 4 visits to Tully including jungle survival training when I was in 1RAR and have not one nice thing to say about that little piece of green hell that looks so luscious and inviting, until you take 5 paces into it and disappear into that dark and dangerous green.
