Chahargahzar is a form of instrumental (non-vocal) and metric music that is prevalent in traditional Iranian music. It is generally considered one of the fastest sections in traditional Iranian music and usually follows a 6/8 or 6/16 time signature.
Initially, Chahargahzar was commonly performed on instruments like the tar and setar. The name might refer to the playing of all four strings of these instruments by the musician or to the pattern of four strokes used in playing. However, there are other possible explanations for the name. In more contemporary periods, Chahargahzar has been written and performed for other instruments, including the violin and kamancheh. It has also become common to perform it accompanied by a percussion instrument like the tombak or with the help of two different instruments.
In describing the execution of Chahargahzar, the terms “base” and “echo” are used. The “base” refers to the simple pattern that is repeatedly played in the background of Chahargahzar, while the “echo” refers to the individual notes played between the base pattern, shaping the melody of Chahargahzar.
Musicologists do not agree on the application of Chahargahzar; some consider it a means for the musician to practice and compare it to an étude in Western classical music. Others see it as the result of composers’ creativity to reduce the monotony of performing Radif music. According to some, the purpose of performing Chahargahzar is to showcase the musician’s skill and give the vocalist a break.
Among the forms of traditional Iranian music, Chahargahzar is relatively newer. The creation of modern Chahargahzars is attributed to Darvish Khan, with notable composers of famous Chahargahzars including Habib Samai, Abolhasan Saba, Morteza Mahjubi, Javad Maroufi, Ali Tajvidi, and Faramarz Payvar. Payvar also has an album named Chahargahzar.
