Barnes first reaction at seeing The Pastry Chief....”It’s a Peach!” Barnes bought 50+ painting by Soutine on the spot. After returning to his gallery in Merion, Barnes kept 20 or so of the best, then sold the rest over the years making a big profit.

your take on the era and portrait is exquisite as your musical choice , i feel the intensity of the frustrated creative geniuses as they emulate one an other in jousters like jealous competition.....recognition....coming too late to some highjacked by the intensity of their emotions throughout hardship....simple white gladiola stand tall.....

Looks like Soutine got more paint on his face than on the canvas.

How did he mix that bright red?

he painted very quickly so my guess is he didn't mix down very much , that red looks like vermilion with or without a touch of cadmium yellow or lemon yellow , secondly the surrounding colours help it's brightness like deep red and warm reddy browns.

Classic case of inflationary purchasing? Could have been an experiment by Barnes: buy the lot, watch prices soar.

Barnes only bought the best of the best. He made a killing selling the 30 odd painting over the years keeping (16?) of the best for his foundation
