(There isn't a rule book with chainsaw carving). Welcome Everyone! its my ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY CHAINSAW CARVING!!! The first thing I want to say is that you don't have to follow anything I tell you in this video.- I would advise you to be safe and careful with chainsaws because they can be dangerous.-
SUBSCRIBE to catch part 2 - Tools and Woods and Part 3- finishes, sealers, cracks and moving forward. Head over to my channel to see more carving videos.
This video will hopefully answer or get you in a direction to find the answers that a lot of beginner carvers including myself have when first starting off.
I fully understand this video is long and is crammed with my own opinions I formed from my own experiences with starting off. Please know I am still a beginner carver and I continue to learn new things everyday.
Carving can be as simple or complex, as you the carver, wants to make it.
My thoughts may help but do not be afraid to make your own path.
PLEASE be respectful to others in the comments.
Be Safe and have fun!
Here is some shops , sites and channels I have been and enjoyed. I know they aren't the only places and please forgive for leaving off places or people. I'm still new and going down the rabbit hole of carving as well.

Yes sir. You've blown my mind with the canola oil mix. Hall, Cook, Chad... all of em in your link I know well and have studied. You're right up there if not WELL past them in my book. I just get so much more out of your videos as a whole than I do the other guys. I have, however, never heard of the canola oil thing before now. Ironically, I just left a comment with Ryan Cook today asking about bar oil flow on my Echo 7310 (from his video). That beast is brand new and I don't want to burn anything up. It just doesn't seem to be delivering the bar and chain oil on my 32" like I think it should. Wondering if a 'mix' would make things flow better? Hmmmm? 🙂

I really like the mix. It gives the sticky properties the chain needs but helps with the flow. I’m sure you have but make sure you have the set screw on full flow if it has one. I had a new saw not wanting to oil right the other day. I dumped the bar oil out and took bar off, used some mixed gas and bar oil and mad a real thin oil to run through. That seemed to prime it. Dumped refilled with bar oil and it was good to go. Try not filling to brim as well

i too found my bar oil to thick for my 12" dime tip,even with winter oil ...so i tried your mixed oil method, and it worked great .thanks for rthe tip . I didnt have oil spraying off all over the place but plenty of oil on the bar , just right in fact .

Like you, I jumped right in and had to get the dimee tip bar. I've been carving about a year as well. I've actually started going back to the standard bars that came on my saws. I'm finding that I can do quite a lot with the standard bar. Things I thought I had to have the dime tip for. Good suggestion to start with the standard bar. You are a bit long winded tho! Ha ha

What kind of logs do you recommend for beginner carving? What not to use?
@GlowingJacksCarvings
@GlowingJacksCarvings 2 года назад
hey john, if you check out pt 2 i go a little more into depth on the subject, but alot of times when you start off i would just try to find rot and bug free logs. i would also look for free wood in your area.
