1:04 was such a necessary change, even if it broke from the source material. The sub's "Damn it..." and mildly angry VA's voice makes it sound like Aki just thinks this is going to be a hard fight, but doesn't sell gravity of what he's seeing at all. Aki not only just lost his partner/best friend/almost lover, who sacrificed herself to her contracted devil to try and save him...but her killer is now using HER contracted devil? The language combined with the choked venom of the English VA's voice really sells just how savage that is on both Akane AND The Ghost Devil's parts.

It’s not even meme speak, it’s just different wording for the dialogue that’s still accurate and in-character, and still work in context. That’s why dubs like this manage to pull that off well while other dubs come off as cringy or forced doing it. It’s more about intent and execution than it is just making whatever changes the translators feel like.

It's more accurate to the manga and the context than the sub's "Damn it..." In the manga (chapter 34, page 17/18), Amanda Haley's translation was "Son of a..." Japanese doesn't really have a lot of curses so generally when localizers handle it, they go by context. Akane has done something deeply, shockingly disrespectful. Aki is understandably pissed. You see it on his face in the manga panel that closes out chapter 34. Seeing Himeno's devil easily gets under his skin. So I would say "son of a..." And "oh you motherFUCKER" are both appropriate here.

@@Cleverconveyence If I recall, Funimation (now part of Crunchyroll) usually references the manga for dubs of adaptations to help speed up the dubbing process. This is probably why they English version has dialogue closer to said manga than the Japanese version.
