quick overview on the basics of chalking out walls. in this video we go over establishing both our 3-4-5 square line using a 40 ft tape and a. common reference line to pull measurements off.
I’m a retired developer on MF projects. I was always the guy busting your asses to get the project done on time and under budget. Mostly successful not because of me (I just wrote checks) but all the trades pulling through. Your channel and videos have enlightened me after all these years. I love the work and attention to detail. Cheers
It's all good no one expected you to realize it when you were bitching and moaning doing nothing. I appreciate the fact that you can do nothing but complain and whine while drinking a coffee and talking. Keep up the good work
I always square my sill plates before building the floor and I make sure the dimensions match the plans so the walls match the trusses it can be timely and sometimes you have to hang plates off the foundation a little or in a little but then the floor is perfect
@@ericjaszczur2860 nice observation👌🏼 could be very true, im just used to seeing carpenters with one set of bags, if we need the 40-100 foot tape ill go to the truck and get it. Chalk line and pencil are a every day carry so we dont need a special layout pouch
Like I said earlier I never listened to a man that wears sweatpants and has his bags on backwards. Grab a nice pair of occidentals they're comfortable too....
@@seanmayo206 Terms used with measurements that don't land exactly on the tape line's. Leave the line and take the line are used too. if the measurement is just a hair over 21 inches you say 21 strong or tell the cutter 21 but leave his cut mark. if a hair under 21 its 21 weak or 21 and take the line.
@@framingbeast720 Yeah but if u watch the video. You didn't start on a square floor. Not sure if you built that or not. Seemed weird to me you would used the gable for square also. Wouldn't it be better for the truss walls to be parallel and tweak your gable walls if you have to?
That’s how we do it but for some reason we end up doing the same exact thing as when we check the foundation for square. 6,8,10. Then we check diagonals then check for parallel. We do that process at least 1000000 times because the boss doesn’t trust himself or anyone else else for that matter
@@huejanus5505 ya its through the roof at the moment. I know some builders buy there material years ahead to avoid inflation and insane prices. It hurts
How would u use 3-4-5 when ur dealing with such big measurements? Wouldn’t u go up to a higher more divisible number of Pythagorean theorem like 20,21,29?
It's not even the best method to use. Just use the Pythagorean theorem to establish exactly what your hypotenuse length is per the exact wall length measurements. That way, there is no projecting like when using the 3, 4, 5 method. To do this quickly, use a trigonometry app.
I like the sheathing goods that you're using out there, northwest? Midwest our client purchases this 3/4 osb sheathing that looks like it's been on clearance at walmart. Y u guys wearing you bags backwards tho.
The building should already be square at that point… It should have been squared up at the foundation plates before the joist and deck… And for the building to be out over an inch in what looks to be about 50’ on The joist and deck can be somewhat of a problem… If you hold the wall in on one side and hang it over on the other you will create problems with the siding… If you just go with it you will have problems with the trusses… Again it should’ve been squared at the foundation plates before the joist and deck
A few things to note: 1)no siding, only brick which increases tolerances. 2) why would I waste time squaring the foundation when I'm going to square what's more important above it, the walls. I chalk the foundation middle wall between the units to maintain my 1 1/2 drywall space and away to the races. 3) if the walls of out or in more than 1/2 I make the adjustments sometime splitting the difference.
No disrespect, but you’re telling me that you don’t even check the foundation for square and just joist & deck it as is... then square the walls on top of it... I’ve built 100’s of houses and been around many different builders over 30+ years and never have I ever seen it done like that... So I guess you can skin your cat your way and I’ll skin my cat my way... but you which way is right
Those dewalt hammers( preferably the mig welded 12 and 14 oz) are very underated, my 14 dewalt is about 4 years old and still has a waffle, not alot but still has some and my stilleto mushed out in 6 months

When you are laying out the exterior walls do you run the bottom wall plate so it is flush with the exterior of the rim joist or do you compensate for squaring things up?
If I'm running it through I always mark 5.5 for the 2x6 first then toe to the chalk line...I've seen guys who just nail it flush with the outside of the rim and that is undebatably wrong
NEW SUBSCRIBER. ONCE U WATCH THE BEAST IN ACTION, YOU WILL PRESS THAT SUBSCRIPTION BUTTON TOO....... THE MAN CAN WORK AND SHOW U A THING OR TWO ABOUT FRAMING
GC's job. Framers scope is erecting, providing the crane if trusses are used, and nails. GC provides the material, trusses & hardware. GC is responsible for calling and scheduling the inspections. Fact is a builder is not really a "builder". They are just construction managers.
I'm not because it's the porch and they are going to fill with concrete then brick anyways. It's not worth losing any sleep over. Now on the other hand if it's the stairs or my sunken and it's even 1/4 off totally different matter. I used to square the foundation and chalk it then I stopped unless its for prefabs where there is set panels sitting on those mud sills. I always make a loi t of measuring my brick to brick outside house measurements front to back, side to side then if that's in place I go flush to Inaide of foundation
@@framingbeast720 I respect your enthusiasm but any framer that show's up on one of my jobs and doesn't square the foundation Everytime only lasts a few hours but I have never had to fire a guy for that before you are the first framer I have seen that doesn't square the foundation sorry buddy but that is what hack's do
Im not gonna lie, I have never seen my maestro's do all that when we lay out. I don't know how to layout but something seemed off, it was taking longer than usually lol.
U can't do that. It is what what it is 51/2 off framing regardless it its sq or not. If u fuckwd it up from foundation it is what it is. If your cc guys suck ass like most. U deal with it. Wtf. I remember my first day framing.
