Me and Gerard decided to check out the mountain biking tracks in the Hunua ranges, south east of Auckland.
We started with a track called challenge track which turned out to be a lot harder than I could have imagined.

🎉I "rode" the challenger track several years ago on my steam bike, managed to go head over the handle bars and walked a fair bit of this track. It's more suited to tramping than mountain biking. I enjoy the other tracks better.

I think this track is better with an e bike as the climbs become a challenge. On a normal bike it is just a lot of walking.

Wow, your Challenge Track adventure was epic! 😲 I tried biking on a much simpler track and thought it was a big deal until I saw what you guys did. 🚴‍♂✨ I've got my own little adventure shared, too. It's kinda funny how different it is from yours! Did you guys come across any hidden gems or have any funny moments while out there? Would love to hear about it!

I tried that track several years ago - and vowed: Never Again! Since then, I've ridden the River and Farm Tracks nearby. Fairly mellow, but much better for riding rather than pushing.

I discovered that place during lockdown, never saw anyone there it was excellent. Saw my first kokako [bird] there too.

It is one of those places not many people go but is a beautiful area close to Auckland.

@@bestdayevermtb2 evidently there used to be a few really gnarly DH trails there too but they all got closed due to Kauri dieback, you can still see the start ramps etc it is as you said actually quite good in the wet too and all the big dams, pipework, pumps, old relics etc are really fascinating

This track is such a waste of time. It ranks 1st equal with Croesus track (off Paparoa track down to Barrytown) as worst tracks I’ve ever encountered by exploring what’s on Trailforks. There should be a separate trail grading for “legal to ‘ride‘ but you’ll spend most of your time pushing/carrying your bike”

Maybe I need to check out that other track you mentioned.😁 Must admit this track is best for e bikes if you like climbing challenges. Not much fun pushing a normal bike along it.

@@bestdayevermtb2 Check out the comments on Trailforks for Croesus track (including mine) and you’ll see what I mean. With Ebike it would be even worse because you’ll be carrying it over obstacles for 80% of the time! Given the effort to get to Paparoa and the new Pike29 track, it would be a real waste of a day to ride it, but sometimes you just have to find out for yourself… Loving your reviews of Rotorua tracks BTW - me and some mates are heading up in a couple of weeks and I reckon we’ll give Ultra Rosa a go 🤘

@@marksouthall3737 I think he started from the car park near the Upper Mangatawhiri Dam - at the end of Moumoukai Road. There are much better MTB tracks - the River and Farm Tracks - that start near there.

What date did you ride this? I do the hunua south trails often but have never done the challenge trail, as this is what i have heard its like. Apparently newr impossible to ride in the winter.

This was a couple of weeks ago. Tempted to retry it with my new bike with a brand new 2.8 on the rear.

Go on Lance Fall up Bugga, Gerard sounds like a good mate. Neat bush trail. Its NOT a laydown. its admiring the scenery. Where you mentioned flipping your were better than 6 feet above Gerard that had some serious elevation

would recommend leaping lizard, bailout and nikau valley at Makara if you're ever coming to welly . Nice native single track

Wow done Lance for making it up that trail it definitely looked very steep. I guess not many riders ride this trail because I noticed it is very over grown with ferns etc .

Yes, I don't think it gets a lot of use.
