Challenging flood! From Deggendorf via Passau to Linz on the Danube river by boat

Today we travel from Deggendorf to Linz while the Danube is in spate.
We spent a sunny weekend at the Donau Yacht Club Deggendorf.
The first route leads us via Vilshofen to the first lock Kachlet, just before Passau.
Then we travel on to the lock Jochenstein, where we cross the border from Germany to Austria.
The next part of our journey leads over the locks Aschach and Ottensheim to the winter harbor of Linz.

Der Schleusenmeister in Jochenstein hat uns mal 1,5 Stunden warten lassen mit der Begründung, dass Sportbootfahrer keinen Stress haben sollen 😀

Bei der Bergfahrt waren die Wehrfelder wegen des steigenden Pegels geöffnet und ich war zur ungeraden Stunde (=Sportbootbergschleusung) da. Er meinte: "Beide Schleusen sind oben. Von oben kommt kein Schiff, von unten kommt kein Schiff, es ist genügend Wasser da, es ist VERTRETBAR, dass ich geschleust werde"... ;-)

Serious flooding in Deutshland over last 3 days and more to come. Are those sluice gates open? Those need to be opened. Water has to have some where to go and the water next door has to be lower for the water to flow out of the accumulated areas to flow into. Flood water may be comeing if they want it or not. So they can help themselves by emptying some water out. Danube Gradient in meters. (Descending). Germany 650ms - 281ms, Austria 281ms - 137ms. Slovakia 137ms - 102ms. Hungary 102ms - 83ms. Sebia, 83ms - 33ms. Romania 33ms - 0ms. Black sea 0ms - Ocean. If there is serious flooding in the higher terrain then those on the next step down (Gradiant) are sure to also get the same water un;less Austria is blocking the exits.

Yes, the German Danube was hit very hard by the flood wave and the highest alert levels have been exceeded there. Let's hope for those affected that no one gets hurt... We boaters are monitoring the flood situation very carefully while our boats are moored in the safe harbor. Based on current forecasts, peak flooding is expected to occur on Tuesday June 4th, 2024. Luckily, given the circumstances, it doesn't hit us that hard here in Austria. In Linz, for example, a water level of 6.30 m is expected on Tuesday. An interesting coincidence is that exactly 11 years ago, also on June 4th, 2013, an extreme flood raged with a water level of 9.27 m, i.e. another 3 meters higher than the predicted water level for nextTuesday. Thanks to the many hydroelectric power plants, the flood flow can be controlled very well through the weir operating regulations. In the most extreme case, not only all weir fields but also the shipping locks are completely open (search RU-vid for "Kraftwerk Freudenau 4.6.2013"). Let's hope that the Danube calms down soon and allows relaxed boating again... Ahoy!
