Many professions have workplaces structured by the assumption of the ideal worker - individuals who are devoted to work and whose responsibilities outside the home are assumed by others. This model no longer fits those entering the professions, leading to employee turnover that is very costly. This TEDx talk explores the collision between the ideal worker culture and what professionals want. Two fields, public accounting and academic medicine, are leading the movement to provide flexibility as a competitive strategy to attract and retain the best workers.
Joan M. Herbers is Professor of Evolution, Ecology & Organismal Biology and of Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at the Ohio State University. Trained as an ecologist, she studied the inner workings of ant colonies for most of her academic life. A few years ago, she developed a second career concerned with gender equity in academia. She is author of the recently-published Part-time on the Tenure track (John Wiley & Sons).
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
