once again, taylor swift.
just when i thought i was done covering her songs, she put another album out. it’s not my fault.
this song. this song is one of the most hard hitting songs ever and i WILL EXPLAIN IT TO EVERYBODY so y’all can actually appreciate the masterful songwriter that miss swift is.
“champagne problems” details the story of a woman who shocks her fiancé and their loved ones by turning down a marriage proposal and leaving them hanging. She seems to have a history of mental illness, which the small town they both live in subsequently stigmatises in their gossip about the failed proposal, derisively calling them “champagne problems”.
Champagne problems are problems which are trivial when compared to real world problems, but nonetheless provide individuals with issues that must be dealt with.
At the end, the boy picks himself up and finds another woman and has a happy ending. Meanwhile, all she gets is “what a shame she’s stuck in the head” with the imagery of watching her ex be in love with his new fiancée through a glass window while she’s stuck alone on the outside.
