I’m not counting Kyle Busch out lol. Still over a dozen races left for him to improve and win.

Stewart missing the chase in 2006, i want you all to know, was a massive shock at the time. I remember vividly talking with fans and friends alike and the "general consensus" was that Hamlin would miss the chase, hes a rookie and he would stumble. Kasey Kahne as well was hot and cold, he would win one week and then run 20th the next, he might fall out. Even Jeff Gordon, he was stupid close to not making the Chase again. But when Stewart missed it and the other 3 I mentioned made it, it was one of those "Wait a minute, hold up, what the hell just happened here" moments. Great video!

This season is the reason The Chase expanded to 12 drivers. Tony just missed and then finished 3rd in points I think over the last ten races. NASCAR couldn’t let somebody that hot get left out again.

2006 was also a disappointing season for the 2 drivers that finished behind Tony Stewart in points the year prior (Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle)

The shocking part of all? Had Stewart finished top 15 at Richmond in September, the results of the Chase in 2006 would have netted him second in the points. He was out of the playoffs that year but raced with more gusto knowing he had something to prove.

Championship hangovers: Dale Earnhardt 1981-83: Dale Earnhardt burst onto the scene in 1979, winning his first race and ROTY. He did one better in 1980, shocking everyone by winning the Winston Cup. He looked to repeat in 1981, but things soon went south. Halfway through the year, Earnhardt was having a solid campaign with a slew of top tens and even a pair of runner ups before car owner Rod Osterlund suddenly sold the team to JD Stacy. Earnhardt drove just four races for Stacy before they had a falling out and Earnhardt left. He finished the year with RCR but left to find greener pastures. Earnhardt struggled with consistency all year, and failed to finish ten of the thirty one races that year. In 1982, he joined Bud Moore’s team, and would return to victory lane at Darlington’s spring race. Despite this, 1982 would turn out to be worse than 81, as Earnhardt was even more inconsistent, falling out eighteen times, including the final eight CONSECUTIVE races of the year, and slipped to twelfth in points. The year was feast or famine, as Earnhardt finished no worse than 10th in the races he did finish. The first third of 1983 was more of the same. After DNFing for the second straight year in the Daytona 500, Earnhardt did absolutely horrendously, dropping out of seven CONSECUTIVE races from Spring Rockingham to Spring Nashville. After an 8th place rebound at Dover, Earnhardt turned his season around, having an insanely consistent summer stretch, picking up two wins, including his first of ten wins at Talladega. He failed to finish just once in this stretch. Earnhardt remained solid for the rest for the year despite four more DNFs, and improved to eighth in points. He finished 1983 with 2 wins but 13 total DNFs. Earnhardt returned to RCR in 1984 a new and improved driver, and the rest is history.
