We'll take a look at the new Chandler TG Type L Microphone and compare it with the original Chandler TG Microphone in a few different settings on acoustic guitar. With all the marketing about the new Type L being "ribbon like", I threw in a quick comparison with an AEA R88 for good measure. API Preamps used on all examples.
Time Stamps:

02:34 System A “Flat”
03:38 System B “Flat”
04:41 System A “Dark” Tape Setting
05:46 System A “Super Setting” Tape Setting
06:49 System B “Dark” vs System A
07:53 Ribbon Mic vs Type L System B
09:54 Ribbon Mic EQ’ed vs Type L

Hey - what are your thoughts on the Redd vs the TG? I've heard some comparisons and while the Redd does sound better - I feel like the extra 3k makes it not as good of a deal

@@andrewgoldin6905 if im honest if i had bought and try the TG mic first i would not have bought the Redd , the TG its a very bold and full sound , it can do so much with the voice settings , the Redd its clean and nice but i end up using the TG more , i can describe more about those two but that’s the short version

@@MillSounds Ya! I love my TG, and have always kinda wanted a second one, but whether I get a second one or not, I'm super happy the Type L is different enough compared to the TG(minus EQ/HPF/Patterns, to be it's own unique thing, but still has that familiar Chandler Mojo, and Sys A/B. They are priced great too.

The Chandler Redd would be amazing! Wish there would be a Video where someone compares the REDD against the TGs against Soyuz 017 Tube, FET or both - and a Vanguard V13 V2 as well as a Warm Audio, Stam and Neumann U87 and U47 :)

I'd definitely be interested in how you think the Type L might compare to the Soyuz 1973, on strengths and weaknesses. Vocal examples would be super appreciated. Though I do alreay very much appreciate the great work you've already put in demoing these mics. I have a JZ Vintage 67 on the way. Was interested in the Type L, but for now, I more needed a more affordable pair of mics, for that kind of money. And those were on sale for just over £1000 a pair in Europe. But later on, I think this type L could serve me as main vocal mic. Nice sounding guitar btw, reminds me of the lovely Guild M-20 Mahogany, but bigger sounding. For me the striking thing was how much I preferred System B flat to the System A flat, but with both mics sounding pretty great on that setting. Much bigger difference between the system settings than the different mics. I'm not sure what the pricing is in the US, but here the Type L is about £870 and the Soyuz, £770, whereas JZ Vintage 67 is about £520.

I feel like the type L has lower lows. I could hear vibrations on my couch. Not to be confused with boomy, because it has good upfront mids

Great... Super interested in how it does with baritone vocals
@MillSounds
@MillSounds 6 месяцев назад
I'm not anywhere close to a baritone! If you want things to sound really smooth, the Type L could work well. Usually with lower voices, I'm reaching for something with a little more clarity to balance out the power of a baritone voice. The original TG might be a better choice in theory, I've yet to find another mic that has the clarity the TG does.

@@MillSounds thanks yeah, best I've ever used is a real 251 in a great studio but that's outta reach for my home setup. I want a fet too so I can turn it on in a flash and go. The adk cremona and Roswell colares are so far the only non tube options... Or perhaps just a super clean lewitt with added plugins will get me there. It's an age of options. I'm a noble baritone so I'm pretty thick but like that high end sparkle. Not quite Thurl Ravenscroft but I can do a decent impression. Hard to find decent reviews for mics for deep baritones.

I'm already working on an "Under $1K" mic video that will have the Type L, 1973, and Vanguard V4. General thoughts, Soyuz would be a better choice if you're wanting a more mid frequency focused mic. I still think it sounds amazing on electric guitar as well. Type L is more "flat" and accurate overall with a smooth top end.
@compucorder64
@compucorder64 6 месяцев назад
@@MillSoundsSounds about right. Yes, I absolutely loved the sound of the Soyuz on electric guitar in your videos. Especially with the launcher. A little crunchy in vibe, but in a good way, sort of like the character an 1176 adds. But then I appreciated the Type L when I heard it on vocals. I think I'd probably be looking for a single smooth vocal mic, to go with the JZ Vintage 67 pair. But if a Soyuz came up second-hand, I might go that route.

Can you do the type L on electric guitar compared to the 1973

I know everyone wants to hear that. I'm going to have the Vanguard V4, Soyuz 1973, and Type L in an "Under $1k" mic video soon'ish. Hoping to start on that today and work on it when I have time next week between mixing.

Type L sounds muddy.
@MillSounds
@MillSounds 5 месяцев назад
To be fair, pretty much every mic I've had next to the original TG mic sounds kind of muddy 🤣(even a nice C12 clone I had in here). It's not the Type L's fault, the original TG is just really open and focused.
