Hi there :) We're Marc & Allys, a couple who left the UK in 2021 to search of somewhere we could build a homestead. This led us to one of Portugal's beautiful natural parks.
Self-sufficiency is important to us, whilst we're not off grid, we're keen to rely less and less on external systems. Follow us as we take on many things for the first time - learning as we go. DIY, Gardening, Growing our own food, Homestead'ing, Studying our land, Learning about permaculture and other farming techniques. We also plan to regenerate our abandoned land and create a thriving ecosystem - which isn't an easy task given we're in Portugal's hottest region (Alentejo!)
Follow us on our journey as we face new challenges, and acquire new skills!

For circular saws and table saws there are specific blades for ripping wood along the grain of the wood, and there are specific blades for doing cross cuts that are perpendicular to the grain of the wood, and there are blades that are made to do both. When you try to use a cross cut blade to rip wood along the grain of the wood you will get smoke, and when you try to use a rip cut blade for doing cross cuts it will also start to smoke. What type of blade it is is often specified on the blade itself or specified when you buy them. Your wood was probably hardwood ply with a hard janka hardness index, and the grain goes in both directions, and that particular combination, hardwood and grains that go in both directions, makes it hard to saw to start with, for any type of saw. But for hardwood ply with the wood grain that goes in both directions I would recommend the blade that does both cross cuts and rip cuts. Let the saw do the work, and make sure that your work piece, especially the cut of, lays flat and flush when you saw it so that it can't pinch the blade. With a good blade even your cheap saw will cut wood like a hot knife through butter. Just get a set of extra blades and you will be good to go for every type of job. And you do not need to buy the most expensive blades either. They just need to have the right specifications. I think that the coop looks great. If something bothers you a lot then you can always add some wooden trim to hide the little imperfections. Out of sight is out of mind 😉👍 I am in the middle of updating my aquaponics system, but the weather is killing me. It is bitter cold, and the minute that I step outside it starts raining. Today I didn't even attempt to do some work. But for this weekend the forecast looks a little better. I would be happy with 15C and a few consecutive dry days. 😐

The changes to holding the roof looks much better, the good thing is that you realize that it could create problems and you change it. It's the best way to learn for sure, it's looking really good.👍

The branch of wood would be perfect for a nice porch. Depending on the number of chickens you are planning to get, you can also add another branch inside the coop. They will love it. 😊

Make sure that any paint/wood stain that you use for the Coop is safe for Chickens. Don’t forget to add some perches in the main run area, that branch you had would be ideal. Set it about 2’ from the ground. Underneath the Coop should also be included in the run, providing extra shade from the sun. Rob, Cardiff, Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Change your reciprocal saw blade. They sale them separately. You do not need to buy an entire saw just to get a sharp blade.

I'd be happy staying in that coop. 😉 Also if you paint inside with a regular white gloss paint, put it on thick it will help seal all the nooks and crevices that mites etc will go and hide during the day and whatnot. It will also help you when cleaning it out as you could put a hose to it no problem. 👍🏼

If you can budget in a track saw you will be able to make endless straight cuts…great for breaking down sheet goods for making cabinets and and the like as well, you will still want a sharp blade though. Looking forward to meeting the chickens 👍

The false eggs are great training tools: if you put one in each box while they are young it can teach them to not peck at their eggs when they begin to lay. I did it with my black austrolorp chickens and they have never eaten their own eggs. The reason is that they get tired of pecking at something that will not break or open up. Good luck!

Blunt blade. Also, the body is on a hinge. There is a lever at the rear. The thinner the wood, board, the higher the body., also, set your straight edge up from the inside of the blade and the remaining width of the plate.👍

Hi you two, don't forget to put chicken wire on the outside bottom of your poly tunnel (two or three feet) and fasten it with zip ties. That way if predatorso try to dig close to the tunnel they will not be able to dig under.

Well done 👍🏻 looks fabulous and am sure the 🐓will be very pleased 😁 a little tip with chickens as they 💩 so much and it’s messy 🤦‍♀️ builders sand on the floor , serves two problems. Soaked up the wet 💩 and you can then rake the dry poo 💩 and use it for fertiliser. The idea is to keep it as clean as you can as you don’t want to attract too many flys 🥹

Just an observation,,,, Mark you work at a fast pace maybe cause you think we will get bored. It’s ok to slow down and enjoy the build, I for one really think you should. You put a lot in to your videos and they are great so take some pressure off your self and slow down. I really admire what you two are doing.😊

We recently just took my chicken coop down. I have an Omlet Eglu, and as we moved it my Son's Girlfriend said that there was still an egg in it. I was a bit confused by this, since I've not had hens for a long time now... oh no, that's not good!... oh, hang on, it's the fake egg! It's also handy for when you get a Hen that insists on trying to eat the eggs before you get to them too. The Hen Penthouse is looking good.

Looks like the blade on your circular saw is blunt, if it burned the wood that's what's wrong. As long as the smoke wasn't from the motor the saw should still be good to go.👍

Does Temu provide chicken boxes to match those mats you found? Glad to see you are planning a broader width for the chicken perches. I recently found a farmer who researched that the conventional 2inch by 4inch board is better for their feet to prevent bumble feet - how, I don't know, but it seems they can rest better on the broader board. I trust you are familiar with inches in some former life! More power!

Your circular saw probably just needs a new blade personally I prefer hand tools a lot less can go wrong you should definitely get a standard builders handsaw cheap as and pretty much last forever as long as you avoid sawing through nails and stuff like that what's more you get a good workout ,the coup looks awesome btw👍

If you make a portable coop you can pull it along your swales while letting your chickens till and fertilize the dirt as they go, or pull it along your garden site and let them prepare it. Her is a cheap one you can build yourself. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8o1X9-Ro_yw.html You also can use the deep bed method in the coop with straw. (5 to 6 inches deep) The chickens will turn the straw into compost, and you will leave it behind as you pull them along.

Mark, it's not the tool, it's the blade. The blade will smoke when the blade is dull. You need to change the blade when it's dull. As far as feeding the chickens. It should be you and Alice who need to feed the chickens each and everyday. Make it a routine, then the chickens will associate you with their food. It will build a relationship between you and the chickens, not the chickens and the food bin. Not all items from TEMU are worth the cost.
