There is one setting to check before you fly the DJI Avata 2, if you want the best flying experience.
Our Avata 2 footage AND experience in the goggles did not look or feel smooth -- quite choppy and jittery, in some cases, which makes it difficult to fly. We tried DJI's ND8, ND16, and ND32 filters to help smooth everything out. While their filters look great and provide excellent motion blur, our main issue was not resolved. We finally figured out what was going wrong and why the footage looked choppy. In this short video, we explain the problem and show you how to fix it and get the most cinematic footage out of your DJI Avata 2 FPV drone!

What shutter speed is ideal with 4k60p? Would it be 1/120th of a second?
@SunriseWaterMedia
@SunriseWaterMedia 3 месяца назад
If you're aiming for the 180-degree shutter angle rule, then 1/120th of a second for the shutter speed would be ideal when filming at 60fps. However, even if you can't get down to 1/120th of a second, just seeing the video in the goggles at 60fps vs 30fps is an amazing difference, regardless of shutter speed.

I haven't flown in 4k30, I went to 4K60 right away, mainly for the slo mo in post if I choose to. What I would like to know is that when I change the "max forward speed" with the motion controller, does that carry over when I am using the RC Remote 3? I don't see a choice to change the max forward speed mph with the RC Remote 3. Am I missing it somewhere? I do love flying this drone though, much better than the initial Avata which I returned!

Thank you for your 4K/60 suggestion, Kelly. I'm having another problem. At 16:9, 4K/60 I can't set recording at H.265. Recording is at H.264. I can't find an adjustment. Do you?

I believe it's not specifically user selectable. It will automatically record in h.265 when using D-log.

Are you using any stabilization? (Rocksteady or post such as Gyroflow) Which is generally better Rocksteady or Gyroflow?
@readysetdrone
@readysetdrone 3 месяца назад
We are using Rocksteady. Gyroflow is more flexible and arguably "better," but we haven't had any problem with Rocksteady. If we were flying for a client, we might plan to use Gyroflow, so that we could tweak some things after the fact, but just flying for fun or even for someone else, Rocksteady has been great. Plus it's convenient.

I've been on 4k/60 since turning the Avata 2 and Goggles 3 on and now feel like I need to check it as I think in my last flight it seemed jerky more than before. Might have changed back to 4k/30 somehow. Thanks for sharing your wealth of information as these things are very helpful in the drone community. #FacePalm (oh, and, May the 4th Be With You!)

thank you so much! when i fly my avata 2, I can go as low as 1 meter, but never dared to go lower, would the drone hit the ground if flown lower or the sensors prevent it??
@SunriseWaterMedia
@SunriseWaterMedia 3 месяца назад
In manual mode, you can fly as low as you want, but it will crash into the ground if you fly too low. In normal mode, and probably sport mode, it seems to not allow flying below about a foot, or so, off the ground, otherwise it just starts to land.

I usually go with 50fps over here but it’s still sweet! 30 is no good for avoiding danger, such as vicious geese attacks, curious squirrel manoeuvres, or a pissed off honey badger ambush.
@SunriseWaterMedia

Nice! I guess the idea is to avoid the lower frame rates. You might need 120 when geese are around! 😅

Does this improve the quality you see in the goggles only or also the quality of the footage itself ?
@readysetdrone
@readysetdrone 3 месяца назад
I'd say the experience in the goggles is vastly different! You will fly more confidently. Of course, the final recorded footage looks smoother as well, but we normally record videos at 30fps (or 29.97), so flying at 60, we thought, was unnecessarily taking up more storage space. However, it's very much worth doing for the improved experience in the goggles as well as in the final footage itself.
@len5499
@len5499 24 дня назад
Um…the Tx to the goggle while flying is fixed 1080P. Which should not have anything to do with recording. Otherwise, I would record at 120fps so I can have 120fps Tx. Is my assumption correct?
@readysetdrone
@readysetdrone 24 дня назад
That sounds correct. The frame rate is the key factor. Unfortunately, the recorded video and the transmission to the goggles seem to share that setting.

60 fps isnt a big deal if you have either, 1) no editing you plan to do; or 2) a strong enough machine that you can edit it. When I edit with my laptop even when using proxies in Davinci Resolve, it's significantly more work for it to edit 60fps vs 30fps. Adjusting the shutter speed to the 180° rule is the best rule in my opinion.
@readysetdrone
@readysetdrone 3 месяца назад
Agreed that you need more computing power to edit 60fps (vs 30fps). However, the other consideration is how it looks to your eyes. To us, flying at 60fps looks and feels smoother than flying at 30fps when we are in the goggles. Thanks for your comment and fly safe!

Good vid. My problem is with the DJI Goggles 2. Going through the menu when I reach "Status" it ends. I can go only up and down from that point. There is never the secondary screen to offer "03 Air Unit or Avata so I can switch to "03 Air Unit". I'm using these goggles 2 with a Geprc Mark 5. My goggles V2 work beautifully with it. Any ideas? Thank you.

@@readysetdrone Hey, Yes, many times. I can never get the secondary window to appear. The one that has "03 Air Unit" or "Avata". When I reach "Status" I can only go up and down without ever seeing the secondary window that offers a chance to switch channels from "03 Air Unit" or "Avata". A lot of people fly drones with 4k/24 fps for easier editing and cinematic shots. Recording fps doesn't really matter... You just have to use proper nd filter to proper light conditions and shutter speed then you can achieve 180 shutter rule human eye blur
@readysetdrone
@readysetdrone 4 дня назад
Totally agreed...at least, on paper. However, for some unknown reason, in the DJI goggles, even with proper motion blur, and the 180 degree shutter rule, the experience is not smooth. It's hard to explain -- hopefully you can try both lower and higher frame rates with ND filters, and you'll see what we were experiencing. It's unfortunate that the goggle and the recording frame rates are tied together.

not sure why you mentioned the nd filters, as they have nothing to do with anything lol
@readysetdrone
@readysetdrone 3 месяца назад
ND filters are great for adding motion blur, if the shutter speed is set right, and initially this whole video was going to be about ND filters. We flew around the bluebonnets to see if there is a color shift from the ND filters, and also to see if we could smooth out the footage. That's when we realized we were recording at 4K/30. So, we just wanted to share our experience, in case it helps anyone. Hopefully that makes sense now.
