Mixed White people are always tested to see if they're too Whitewashed which is often the case that they are more distanced from their minority side. So those types of assimilated mixed ppl and White ppl would be unwelcome in that POC meeting UNLESS they specifically wanted it open to all for open discussion. But what's so wrong about asking White students to skip out on campus that day? The point is also that they experience a FRACTION of what poc have experienced under White government and it's a way for the institution to show they are conscious and contrite of their past. I wouldn't care lol it's a free day to skip school.

Reading a paper someone throws at you is an instant win because typically extreme claims from single papers: 1. Are made up to sell the title and the authors waffle in the discussion section to avoid admitting they can't prove it, or 2. Are possibly legitimate but vastly overreaching based on the data/facts provided (usually politically charged subjects), or 3. Are never actually made in the paper because the person linking it only read the abstract, or 4. Can be disproven by a close reading of the paper itself (usually if it was not peer reviewed or is a pre-publication). The real trouble comes when "science news" or pop science magazines start republishing the claims as if they are fact, and people just cite the newsie's misreading of the paper instead...

Well, to some extent, reality doesn’t require your ideas map onto it to survive. You can go through life thinking the earth is flat and you will have a job, a family, be able to eat food, have sex, reproduce and survive. Keeping this in mind, the internet has provided people with many different “viable” realities to exist in without it being detrimental to their well being or health. The times this doesn’t come into play is when your mapping effects your health, such as thinking in your reality you don’t need to eat. You can act that out and find out very quickly it’s not accurate and won’t work. Whereas in this case, you can believe any of it and it won’t actually matter.

That isn't to say there aren't bad faith actors who are a waste of time to talk to, its just that if you treat everyone who disagrees with you like that just to avoid the maybe 5% who actually are like that then you end up alienating a ton of people who could have been swayed if you just took their concerns seriously and answered questions. My experience with professors is that they either tried to be the cool professor (there’s one that reviews like playboi Carti on RU-vid that’s a good example of this, I haven’t seen him give a bad review to even trash albums) but limit your pushback for the chance of more students to be actively engaged, or one that’s like you’re describing who doesn’t care what the students think of them and are willing to get actively combative to make a point. There’s good and bad professors of each type and I think the based centrist opinion is a mix of both in the faculty. If it’s just kid glove professors just trying to draw students in (most of mine especially the first half of college), you get overconfidence but maybe passion and engagement, and vise versa, you may drive some kids away but you get more critical thinking from the less that are engaged. I am not an expert I am a moron with an undergrad degree but my personal anecdotal experiences all fit into those two categories, and like I said both can be good or bad professors with benefits and deficiencies. However one thing that each professor agreed on is that no serious debate should resort to ad home in ‘em attacks, and appeals to authority are for the trite sophists, and furthermore that slippery slope fallicies are a slippery slope.

@@sams7068 the professors themselves don’t even get pushback. College faculty are typically staffed by people who are ideologically left (some center left but most far left. There is no conservative representation in college). As a result, the ideas never experience any sort of challenge or pushback, nor do the teachers spouting these ideas. The smug character and hubris to think you are more enlightened than anyone else is coming directly from the professors. At least that’s how I view this whole situation. And on and on it goes. It will only get much worse with time. And then these people enter society.
@sams7068
@sams7068 Год назад
@@D3ckstr Well my personal experience very recently going to college disproves the “no conservative representation thing.” I went to a fairly rural school, mainly because I got a good scholarship there, but also because of the quality of the teachers, and here were some of the individual political opinions: 1. A conservative Russian guy who survived living under the Soviet Union He got some pushback, but there wasn’t a single person in my class who claimed to be a communist and tried to convince him of it. Honestly the professor reminded me of Jordan Peterson in the way he constructed interesting ideas about society that cover multiple fields outside of his own specialization, and that’s where he mostly got pushback, since sometimes those ideas were based on broader claims than an expert on Russian foreign policy could reasonably make. Also, he invited us to push back against his ideas in essays. He graded papers both comprehensively and well that disagreed that Marxism inherently leads to some form of Stalinism, and ones that agreed. 2.A liberal guy who had two law degrees and worked in a government agency He got TONS of pushback. Since it was also a law class there were some conservatives who wanted to work as either a federal officer or a prosecuter something and they often made conservative points about governmental agencies to a guy that what clearly very intelligent. He defended his ideas very well yet didn’t make the class a liberal echo chamber, I mean the guy had worked with conservatives in real government, since he was working with a conservative administration to actually get policies to work. Other anecdotes (that don’t suggest a trend but at least show that this isn’t an all-encompassing trend): all my history professors (3 I think since I took them early on college out of interest and not a major) were conservative. One thought the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was warranted yet allowed for debate on that topic (that’s a pet issue of mine that kind of defines the bounds of my foreign policy, I think it wasn’t justified and I wasn’t quelled from discussion.) Geachers in Poly Sci seemed much more afraid of being cancelled for not being neutral and not lending credence to conservatism and liberalism as an ideology rather than the alternative. I only had one professor that was tbe berniebro cliche conservatives are thinking of, and my conservative roommate would debate with them one-on-one in office hours. So basically my claim here is that it really depends where you go. Mine was a liberal arts college where not all tbe professors were researchers and we weren’t in a large metropolitan area. I think not all professors even revealed their political ideology, and even if they did they were willing for people with different views to challenge them (and would challenge them back). I didn’t go to the school because it was describe as particularly conservative.

I don't always agree. Its good to have some people get interested, but when it comes to people like Sneako or Infra Haz, it would be better if they stayed away. They don't actually ever engage with anyone and just shout over people who contradict them, which just poisons conversations for everyone else. For Internet debates to have any value, the people talking have to have some actual desire to understand the other person and listen to what they're saying, even if it's just to refute it.
