Just wait until Cold Days and Skin Game. Since Changes, every book really ratchets things up a notch. Seeing as how Jim has said numerous times that it's going to be a 20 book series with an apocalyptic trilogy at the end (not sure if he means 20 +3 or 20 total) you really feel things heating up more and more in each book as we approach the end.

@@orcanimal He usually said it's going to be somewhere between 20-22 books + the apocalyptic Trilogy (Stars and Stones, Hell's Bells, Empty Night). Since he had to split Peace Talks into two and throw Battle Grounds in the mix, I'd say we can at least expect 21 books + the trilogy.

What I love most about Changes is it feels like a season finale while laying groundwork for the next season. Butcher was able to wrap up a lot of plotlines in Changes (and to a lesser extent Turn Coat) and also give you just taste of what I am assuming is the end game for the series (you see this the most in Cold Days). Amso totally agree with the ramifications. Next part is spoilery! My favorite quote from Butcher is his direct response to Changes having a cliffhanger, in which he disagrees in the most Jim Butcher way arguing cliffhangers leave the plot hanging and he says "Harry's daughter is kidnapped and he will die to get her back. And does. The end" 😂😂😂

Just wondering, have you been following along with the short story content in "Side Jobs" and "Brief Cases?" The various stories in those collections take place between the main books, and flesh out the DF world quite a bit. Some of them are very relevant to the development of several characters. ***SPOILER FOR CHANGES*** Fun note about how Susan comes back with that big news she has. Jim takes on a lot of bets and challenges. It's how Dresden started and why Codex Alera exists. He was challenged once to write a bondage sex scene into a book and have it be plot-relevant. Ergo, the scene in Death Masks. Sorta plot-relevant, right? Now it *definitely* was relevant.... Still maybe mighty clunky, but there's some basis for it now.

Your description of the different sized waves is spot on, and part of what makes the Dresden files not only good, but so re-readable (which goes into my personal rating system). I've read a couple of other urban fantasy series recently where this was missing: the individual books really don't stand on their own, because it's all one arc. One of my favorite series. I re-read the entire thing at least every other year, sometimes more often than that I just went back and watched every Dresden review you had, and it's been interesting watching your thoughts change/evolve. I was sorely tempted to try to write on several of the other reviews, but I was unsure how much of what I wanted to say was due to knowledge I had of books you hadn't read yet. Evidently, a lot of it, and you clearly already get what I wanted to say. The climax of this book was astoundingly well done. Those three (four?) sentences broke me, and I had to step away from the book for a few minutes to get my emotions back under control so I could finish the book. Then at the end, my jaw hit the floor. I can't wait to see what you think of the remaining books, and I'm SUPER jealous that you are only going to have to wait a few months to get Peace Talks, where many of us have been waiting years. One more edit: One thing I find really interesting about the writing in Dresden Files, is when you read Butcher's Codex Alera series, and compare those release dates to the Dresden Files release dates. He clearly learned a lot about writing while working that other series, and it greatly benefited the Dresden Files.

As a long time Dresden Files reader watching you go thru this arc of reading the series has been very enjoyable. I am very jealous of you still having a few stories left to read. I happy for all of us that we get 2 Dresden books this year.

I think part of the point of the reveal is that it DOES come out of nowhere. It hits Harry square in the face and all he can do is go to Mac's and drink. This event is so huge and earth shattering that MAC of all people SPEAKS A WHOLE PARAGRAPH. So I actually think that the twist at the beginning needs to come out of nowhere because it's from Harry's POV

All us Dresden Fans were waiting for this! It's like all the ASoIaF waiting for the TV series to get to The Red Wedding... But now that you've read this it's highly recommended that you read the first shorts collection Side Jobs. The Murphy story in that "Aftermath" is about just that and is great getting her perspective on Harry, esp in that moment.

subscribed! I love the content. It is so refreshing to see there are avid readers still out there! On your recommendation alone, I'm going to purchase some butcher books. I made it through a couple of books and thought that is where it was headed. Since I'm not a fan of detectives or shizzy 5' o's I put it down. Evidently, I didn't crack that bottle and let it breathe! You sold me on giving it another try.

I've been enjoying your Dresden Reviews. One of the things I tell people when I first reccomend is: The first three books are a little rough, but the fourth, he hits his stride. At 7 he kicks in Turbo. Around book 10 it goes into overdrive, and then a smugglers turn at Changes. 13 you're coming out of the skid, and for 14 and 15 you're trying to figure out where you're going, but you're loving the ride. But... I wanted to say, I don't know if you'd want to review any of them, but once you're through with Skin Game, read the short stories anthologies

From someone who read the book at the release. The words "Son of a B*****" came out and then the book when flying across the room. Followed by retrieving the book to reread the last couple of chapters to figure out what happened. I didn't really care for Ghost, it was just filler to me. The story picked back up with Cold Days.

Dresden did talk about what it would be like to be a parent a few times in the prior books, mostly when he waxes about his Mom and Brother. Everything Jim does to Harry, he foreshadows. For example, how many times did he tell us how Kincaid would what he did at the end of Changes. I am pretty sure I've figured out who Cowl and Kalmori are thanks to Turn Coat and what Molly said happened to Ana. I even think I know who was with Peabody on the island. The story is amazingly complex and if you don't pay attention to what Harry says, then you might just miss the warnings.
