I take a few hours to show how I change the brakes and clean my chain on my BMW F850GS using the pitbull bike stand since I don't have a center stand.

Dude, I can't tell you how happy I was to pick up the tip on using a ratchet strap for lifting the wheel into place! Like all the best "simple ideas" it was a stroke of genius and a complete game-changer for me. Only this morning I had invented a whole new vocabulary of curses directed at BMW, before I saw this video, and after that tip it became so easy. Thank you 👏👏 Also hooking the chain over the swing arm wasn't something I was doing either - so that too was a great tip I picked up from your video 🙂

It's always good to see your video post Chad , great job on the brakes and chain cleaning , and 4000 mile ride, 👍 job man. Sure enjoyed the Pisgah ride.

Thanks David. Pisgah is incredible. Just lots of people in the East and hard to find a campsite. Been back since the video and and had to ride another 3 hours to find a place to sleep…. Maybe after summer it’ll thin out. The ride to Main was great. Far beyond my expectations. Unfortunately, I didn’t video any of it.

I would not use simple green as it will break down the lubricant inside the chain. Only use a chain cleaner that is petroleum based. You will see premature chain wear using detergent s. Love the ratchet strap trick I use it myself. I also don't remove the rear wheel when doing the pads.
@1leftadventures258
@1leftadventures258 Год назад
Thanks for the input Patrick. I don’t doubt your advice but I’ve used simple green for years. I’ve actually found petroleum based cleaners swell the o rings 🤷🏼‍♂️. The ratchet strap thing made it way easier! Cool to hear others had figured that out as well. Anyway, sorry for the late reply. I no longer make videos and don’t check comments that often. My bad. Take care and safe riding. Chad.

Should you remove the rear wheel in order to replace the pads? I use to do it in my other bikes without removing the wheel

From a newby in Australia, thanks so much for this video. Would be interested to know what sort of tyres you are using and the amount of time you were off road.
@1leftadventures258
@1leftadventures258 2 года назад
Oh man. It’s been a while since that video. Without watching it again, I’d think I was using Mitas E07+ at that time. My go to tire for all around traction and longevity was the Motoz Tractionator GPS. Im currently trying out Dunlop Missions. A for off road, I’d like to say more, but in reality I’m probably off road 25 to 30 percent of the time. But when I’m off road, I like the confidence of having a 50/50 tire. Hope it helps. Chad

what foot brake pedal are you using?

I’m so sorry. I stopped making videos years ago. I have replied to EVERY comment. But for some reason, RU-vid stopped sending me notifications of comments…. Sorry. Anyway, I used a brake pedal from AltRider. I loved it!!! Still love it. When I reluctantly traded my bike for what I have now,…. I demanded I take my brake pedal. Truth. It’s made a huge difference when off road. There’s nothing better. Again. Sorry for the late reply. Chad.

Hey Chad! Do you do any other general maintenance after a long trip like tightening bolts or greasing bearings, axle and swing arm or stuff like that? I’ve heard it should be done but I haven’t find any video on RU-vid.
@1leftadventures258
@1leftadventures258 2 года назад
Hey Alvaro. Thanks for commenting! Yea, I do a lot of maintenance on the bike as I travel constantly. Unfortunately, I’ve stopped making videos. I’m just not cut out for it. My advice is to keep watching videos and take what most say with a grain of salt. Many are FOS but some are good. You’ll figure out what matters. Best of luck brother. Chad.

cant you just do the brake pad change with the wheel still on? like on the F800GS? and is there a reason you are not using coppergrease on the back of the pads? just wondering, like the video ;)
@1leftadventures258
@1leftadventures258 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment. To be honest, I didn’t even look if I could. I assume I could have but it’s gotten so easy to pull the wheel that it’s normal. I had just gotten back from a 4500 mile ride and lots of nasty weather. So I had planned on Breaking everything down, cleaning well, and lubing. I used to use brake grease on the backs, but Once I changed them and didn’t have any copper grease to put back so I did anyway. I had no brake squeal. To the best of my experience, the squeal is the only purpose, so I haven’t used it since 🤷🏼‍♂️. I appreciate you commenting and watching. Thanks.

maybe you needed to look at the brake piston seal also. Looks like there was a leak there with all the oil on the brake and pads.
@1leftadventures258
@1leftadventures258 2 года назад
Thanks for the heads up. That oil was from overspray of wd40 where I was cleaning other parts. I wasn’t concerned about getting it on the brakes because I was changing them. But again, thanks for pointing it out.

I’ve not made a video in a few years. Just wasn’t my thing. I tried to reply to every comment, but after so long, RU-vid stopped sending me comment notifications…. I apologize. I got on here to delete my channel and just saw the comments. Again, i apologize. Yep. I do that often. But I usually remove the wheel just to do maintenance and check everything. You are absolutely right. No need to remove the wheel. Was and is just a preference of mine. Happy riding my friend.

Thanks for the video, it’s really interesting to see. You really should have a center stand on the bike. Isn’t it any aftermarket stands that will fit the bike? I think it’s a little difficult to measure the chain tension on the bike, because the chain touches the swing arm before the chain is in the spec so it’s not possible to measure the “upper slack”. If the chain is so tight that it’s not reaching the swing arm in upper position it’s to tight and not in spec. It would have been better to know the correct values for the down position of the chain. Like if the downwards chain slack is between “x to y millimeter” from swing arm it’s in correct spec. They also could have pointed out another point to measure the slack than the center of swing arm.
@1leftadventures258
@1leftadventures258 3 года назад
Yes. I agree. A center stand would make things much easier. They make aftermarket ones, but I’ve really gotten used to my snap Jack and Pitbull. It really doesn’t bother me anymore. I think (off the top of my head) it’s around 40mm of total play. I used to push the chain to the plastic guide on top and measure to the downward point. Sometimes it worked, some it didn’t. I’ve done this so much now, I have learned by just lifting and pushing by hand to where it works best. Kinda hard to explain how I do it.
@JoonesAdventuresMC
@JoonesAdventuresMC 3 года назад
Yes I can imagine that when you have done it a lot of times you know by the memory in the muscles how to lift and use those things. An it’s the same with the chain. After all those times you can almost see by just looking at the chain if it’s out of spec. That’s that type of knowledge that can’t be teach in text. You have to learn it by doing.👍
