Sometimes people can get trapped in the downward spiral of bad habits, and have a lack of motivation to improve themselves, most of the time people around them don't know how to help a person like her, and so they automatically begin to loose respect for that person. My opinion is, these bad habits are usually the result of depression, but before you take my word for it, do some research.

If people took responsibility for their so-called psychological problems and tried to act differently they would eventually start to feel and function better. If your psychological condition makes you behave in a self destructive manner, then the cure is to change that behaviour until that behaviour is no longer your habit, then you will feel better, your behaviour will improve and you will function better within society and maybe even have a happy life. Having other people, sympathise and then excuse your behaviour does not help you one bit, it just allows you to wallow in self pity and spiral further into your deviant behaviour and consequent misery.
