In this video, Sinead, a tour guide with Free Tours by Foot London, brings you to the best places to watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony. WATCH OUR FULL WESTMINSTER VIDEO • London Walking Tour: B... .
The Changing of the Guard is a large formal ceremony in which a group of soldiers is relieved of their duties by a new batch of soldiers and are accompanied by marching bands and many, many onlookers.
Technically, the main ceremony takes place at Buckingham Palace, but this isn't really the best place to view it. Parts of the ceremony take place in 3 other locations near Buckingham Palace. And these are St. James's Palace, Clarence House, and Wellington Barracks.
And in this video, Sinead is going to show you the best way to witness as much of the process, pomp, and excitement as possible.

Hi Sniead, how are you? I loved watching the guards when I was in London. Unfortunately, didn't see the changing of the guard. I'm currently working on a story involving a story about a royal guard its called falling hard for the Royal guard by Megan Clawson you should read it. That's the actual title of the book. I. Writing the fanfiction to it. xxx ❤😊

Thank you very much for sharing I’ve been watching the changing of the guards in London for a very long time before the pandemic. I really enjoy watching them marching and listening to the military band. It is very therapeutical to watch them because you forget almost everything that’s worrying you at that time and you just get glued on what is happening and even dance along their music. What Always do is to pray and bless them as they carry on doing their royal March and playing their instruments. It’s lovely to see and I encourage others to support them. They bring the British tradition to life. Brilliant. On the other hand you may hear other spectators mocking them and saying negative words, but in all this I always look on the positive and enjoy myself in what they do because I think if my brother or sister was one of them, how would I feel about the negativity?? Bad indeed. So I choose to look on the good side and support them in prayer, blessing and cheering them up. God Save the Queen and bless us all.

When my friend and I visited in 2011 we took a day long black cab tour. We started at Abbey Road and then we arrived at St. James Palace and the band was playing a Beatles song. Then off to Buckingham Palace. We didn't know about Free Tours by Foot then but our guide knew what he was doing. I loved seeing it again! Thank you!

aww this was the best, i thank you with all of my heart, you know exactly what my spirit needed. Since i have never traveled abroad, and always wanted to tour the UK, this was right up my alley!! I always dreamed of going to the UK since i was 14, it seemed my life started at that age, there was a terrible life before that but my dream started at that tender age. this was so amazing and i called it right, you are my sister and i adore and love you through my soul!!

Sinead, you surely said it right. The amateur way of watching the ceremony is like I have done it the eight or ten times I have been present, the first occasion way back to 1969!, and that is standing outside the gates of Buckingham Palace. The Household Cavalry (Blues & Royals) were saluting the Colour, not the old guard. The Colour represents the Monarch & has been sanctified by a C of E bishop & is considered a sacred object. All soldiers salute a Colour or the lead gun of the Royal Horse Artillery.

Approximately 11.03 they leave the barracks at 11.00 so if you position yourself against the railing you will have a wonderful view Sinead

The only thing I’d say is it’s not set Monday, Wednesday, Friday Sunday. It’s every 48 hrs during winter months, so it’s Monday, Wednesday, Friday Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday etc.

I will be in London in mid to late August. Will the changing of the guard sequence that you showed in your walking video from St James, through the park to Wellington Barracks then on to Buckingham Palace change…I plan to follow that same route unless you have guards that are paid to take that very same route. I am more interested in listen to the music at St James then the marching and the music at Wellington… an other suggestions? Again i have watched your video numerous time and it is really excellent (not really interested in touring the parlance sorry!

The "British Flag" is always referred to as the Union Flag (not Union Jack).

The Guard in the start of the video, ""it's not the slip-it's the recovery that counts"" Sinead, you in the UK have such a Long and Dynamitic History. Between the History, the cities, the small towns to the beauty of the country side you have enough subject matter to last you for years. My neighbors moved here from Manchester about 5 years ago and they call me a "Brit" stuck in a American body because I read so much UK history. A GEM of a watch.... I went way over break, Back to work I go..............

The Changing of the Guard is a "formal" Guard Mount in "military speak." What you call a mini guard change is posting the guard.

That is not very good security, advertising when Her Majesty is in residence at Buckingham... I.e. 7:08 UK does have the best military bands in the world ! Many of us Yanks were touched when Her Majesty bid the Coldstream Guards band play our National Anthem on 9/11/2001 ! 27:38 playing one of our most popular marches, National Emblem

Best view I ever had was at the Wellington Barracks. Seeing the inspection of the old guard was cool, but the best was the day we were there, one of the band members had his last day and the band played him off as he left the group.

There would be some appalling characters hanging around these areas years ago. They were "photographers" . They used to randomly start taking pictures of people without invitation (like windscreen washers at an intersection) and then give them a line of bull that often resulted in them taking the name and address of the tourist and two pounds per photo. I saw some of them with inches thick stacks of envelopes. Of course no one ever received a photo , the cameras were probably empty. To be frank they were scum!!! Modern cameras and mobile phones sent them into extinction ( I hope ) !

Thank you for this video. Plan to follow it exactly in a few weeks! Question though, if we'd like to watch the changing of the guard in the exact way that you show in this video, what time are we safe to have our tickets to tour the State Rooms @ Buckingham Palace? Options now for 11, 11:30, 11:45am? Will we be blocked off because of the guard ceremony to get to the tour entrance? Can we fish through the crowds to get to it on time? Next after that is 12:30pm, which I fear we'd be wasting time in between. Would love your advice on what to book, and if you have any other suggestions on where to grab a snack if you happen to say book the 12:30pm tour. THANK YOU!

Thank you for this, I lived in London for many years yet never saw the Changing of the Guard because of the crowds. If only I’d known how easy it is! It was great to see the Household Cavalry too, my great-uncle served with them and was part of the Sovereign’s Escort at the Queen’s Coronation.

Informally known as the Punishment Parade, the tradition of the 4 o’clock inspection began in 1894. Queen Victoria arrived at Horse Guards, expecting to find the Household Cavalry ready and waiting to escort her back to Buckingham Palace, only to find the guards either asleep, drunk or gambling on the job! Deeply unamused by this, Victoria commanded that for the next 100 years, the guards be inspected every day at 4pm to ensure they were taking their duties seriously (hardly surprising she would wish that, given by 1894, there had been seven attempts on Victoria’s life). The century of punishment technically ended in 1994, but Queen Elizabeth II ordered the Household Cavalry to carry it on indefinitely as a regimental tradition, one that continues to this day.

I took the Changing of The Guard tour with Sinead a few years ago. I remember her saying “ tour group Go! Go! Go! “ as we dashed from place to place. Sinead is very informed, knows all the tricks, and has a lovely personality. Her tours are a must. Graham Sydney Australia

The foot guards for Clarence House were a mix of Grenadiers ( single buttons and grenade collar tab) and Scots Guards (group of 3 buttons and Thistle collar tab) and not surprising that they are mixing and matching right now.

At 8.30 minutes That is not the Captain of the Guard. That is Drum Major Fitzgerald (Coldstream Guards) about to take up position to wait for the band to come out.

Sinead , the story of the "sobriety march" is absolutely true . You will also see guards officers doing a "sobriety march" when troops are paraded . The officers will march backwards and forwards in a straight line . This goes back to when officers got drunk in the officers mess , the "sobriety march" was to prove to troops that the officers were sober and fit to command them .

excellent video as usual by you, though I was born in London I never got round to visiting any of the famous places or sites. I used to go past Trafalgar square often when I came to London to buy jazz albums. For many years I have lived in Essex but whilst married in 1st marriage I never had spare money to visit London. my last marriage ( until 2002 ) I also lived in Essex, but never got round to main London venues. Did go to London to view with my wife and children . Now I live alone and I am 80 and so not keen on a lot of walking. anyway Sinead keep on making your great videos, thanks

So, the little gem of knowledge regarding Queen Victoria encountering drunk troops. My understanding is, that it was the Officers that were drunk and thereby, when you see a Changing of the Guard, the Officers are pacing up and down as proof that they have not been drinking. (It's also quite interesting to see how they walk backwards a few paces without tripping over their Sword scabbards)
