Changing Snow Tires at Home Fast

An easy way to change shows - changing wheels, saves money and time. The two hacks I’ve found which speed things up are a) use an impact driver, full 1/2” mechanic version ideally but even a regular 1/4” followed after a long handled ratchet speeds things up. And b) welding on the same size but as the tire studs are to the Jack. And a third!
Take off all the studs part way and kick the fire to break the rust adhesion which forms. This allows the vehicle weight to do most of that job for you.

Excellent tip. I fight the damn adhesion every season. Thanks.

You always start the lug nuts by hand , otherwise you can easily cross thread them when you put them back on with a drill. Start by hand then use drill. I've even had an auto repair shop cross thread my lug nuts twice by only using the drill.

Yeah it’s a good tip, I go slow at first but often I will start em by hand when not moving as fast as in this video.

Shockingly rookie move on his part.

No. Do not spray lubricants where they can come into contact with your brake rotors - can cause brakes to perform poorly or fail. Do not knock the tire off the hub center while vehicle weight is on the tire - can mess up the threads on your studs. Do not tighten your lugs in a circular pattern - they need to be tightened across from each other. May be more but I had to stop watching. The only items here I can recommend are the impact wrench with the scissors jack, although you really should put a block in front of the opposite tire (at least!).

Thanks for the input, I am careful not to let the lube on the rotors and have never had an issue in doing this for about 10 years. But it's no surprise to me that you don't want any lube on them. I generally tighten first across then around, maybe that's not clear in this clip. I'll go around lightly then tighten fully in opposite pattern. Interesting that the weight can damage the studs. I put the E break on which seems to suffice but i'm sure blocking would be better.

I reread your comment - i only back the studs off slightly so the threads seem quite protected as a result, because the stud keeps the hub from impacting them except the very inner most one perhaps.

- Lubricants will burn or wash away over time as a properly functioning pad will always be in slight contact with a rotor to protect from debris and will work away any lubricant. - The wheel partially supported from the ground will not damage the threads on the stud when bumped loose. - The rule of tightening opposing nuts lowers the risk of tightening a wheel not properly seated and is wedged. Tightening in a circular pattern has no negative risk in itself when the risk of tightening an improperly seated wheel is paid attention to and avoided. The lubricant idea for inside the wheel is an old trick I still use for my truck. I use Jig-a-loo, it's a water repellent and the coating lasts a good while, snow doesn't stick. I've heard of people rubbing paste wax on their wheels and tires, both as a rubber preservative and a non-stick surface for dirt and snow.

Thanks for the tips. I am doing well, hope the same for you and yours.

A floor jack is my hack. I rarely have an issue getting wheels off if I'm swapping tires twice a year. Snow tires are so very worth the extra cost!

Remember to tighten the nuts across from each other. Or maybe it doesn’t matter..?

I generally do, circularly it's light, then tighter across from each other.
