The save data will be lost as soon as the battery is disconnected. The safest way to backup the game save for a battery swap is with a device like the GB Operator - which will let you dump the save to your computer, and then upload it back to the cartridge when the new battery is installed.

Yes, I think many people use the words 'dry' or 'dead' interchangeably when a battery is too far discharged to perform it's job.

Short answer yes, it's risky. The safest way to preserve your save file is with a cart reader like the GB Operator: www.epilogue.co/product/gb-operator If you're trying to preserve the save file and have access to a gba, yeah you'd need to have the game running with the save loaded. Yes, it's pretty risky - a lot could go wrong. For instance, if you slipped with the iron or dripped solder accidentally you could bridge components or traces unintentionally. Creating a short with the game running could cause all sorts of things to go wrong including destroying the save or potentially permanently damaging a component. Then there's also the risk of just having a hot iron near the plastic game cartridge and your gameboy.

@@yocacola It's still a really neat trick though. I've got a Monster Brain which can back up saves, but the GBA thing is a nice last resort if you're not looking to spend a bunch of money to replace the battery. You could certainly reduce the risk a fair bit by using some masking tape over the rest of the board that would probably be enough to stop the odd small drip or brief iron touch from making direct contact and causing damage.

I gotta admit that the aluminum game shell combined with the extra weight of the funny playing screen kit makes the Game boy a little precariously top heavy. But it does look super cool 😎

The sticker was applied to an aftermarket cartridge, and the original cartridge still has the original sticker. Nothing has been destroyed or discarded.
