My first one was a 77 tt500. Loved it but it was stolen after a year. Then in 92 I found a 80 sr500 for sale at a yard sale for 600.00 us dollars. I still have it but I need to restore it. Hope to do that in the next few years. I plan to keep it as stock as possible. The exhaust does need to be a bit more loud to enhance the thumper sound.
Hoi Tom...nice bike the sr 400....modifications are so nice to put on and i;ll be glad to follow you in you're modifications on you're amazing Yamaha love it and see you soon....greet from Holland
Hi there Do you still have your SR400 ? I've got a question, if you still have them could you tell me the width of the original handlebars ? I have an SR500 the same as the bike on the dealers pamphlet at 2:55 in your video, that's an Australian pamphlet from 1978 I'm pretty sure the "Single 500" on it's sidecovers is unique to the Australian New Zealand release 2J2 The other difference to the US Canadian release 2J2 is the Australian NZ model had a metric speedometer and only came painted black and the US Canadian models had imperial and metric speedometers and may have had slightly wider handlebars and came in black and I believe they also came in red Anyway I was thinking of replacing my original slightly rusted handlebars for factory SR400 bars they appear to be very similar to my original bars If there's a difference maybe the bends on the new 400 bars are a little tighter but they look like they are basically the same in most respects About 90% of the parts from recent SR400s will fit the original 78 models and many still have part numbers beginning with 2J2
@@los_gasolinos Thanks I wanted to fit Renthal alloy "755 Road Medium" bars, they're 73.3 centimetres wide and a similar shape to the standard SR bars but they're a bit too narrow where they clamp on so I thought I'd get the standard SR400 bars from Yamaha The standard SR400 bars cost $70 from Yamaha Australia To get my original bars re-chromed locally would cost about $250 I did look at the Kedo site their replica standard SR400 bars are $89.90 We have a local Kedo agent and we also have a local Wemoto, the bars Wemoto have are wider and cost $120 Australian My original 1978 SR500 bars are 72 cm My original bars are only very slightly rusty I might put them back on and think about it
Love the SR! I only wish they’d made them available between the 80’s and the bike’s return to the US in 2014, they’re very rare here, unfortunately. I’d love to get one, they’re classics!
Hi love the look of your bike. I want to get that seat and was wondering how many inches or cm did you lose with that seat compared with the stock seat? The stock seat has a tall height of 31.1 inch and I'm trying to get it to a 30 or maybe even a 29 if possible. I'm short.
Hi, I'm 1,68 m, not the tallest of guys. I had no real problem with the stock seat although there is a real difference with the Kedo seat (can't say how many cm). I have both feet firmly on the ground. The stock seat is softer and thicker, the Kedo seat is thinner, firm but not hard. I have done maybe 8-10.000 km on it, no problem, it's very good quality, I can only recommend it. Kedo gives a good notice on how to switch seats, all bolts are included.
I just bought a used SR400 too, and I love it! There are not so many videos on it, especially if we talk about minor modifications like the ones you are pointing out. I'm looking forward for pt. 2! Keep it on! PS: could you link the sites where you are buying your stuff! EDIT: nevermind! Part 2 is already up, just saw it! :)
Hi! The original seat is thicker, so somewhat softer than my new seat as the foam is thicker. But the Kedo seat still is very comfortable. I have done several large tours over 2,3 days on it and everything was fine!

Here in Australia they now class registration by Horse Power instead of Cubic Centimetre In the passed the SR500 was in a highest priced registration category, since this change from CC to HP they are now in the lowest price category and can be ridden by beginners
