NOTE FROM TED: This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of the relationship between light, health, and disease. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com...
Many think of light pollution as an aesthetic issue, not a serious environmental concern. Dark skies advocate and photographer Bettymaya Foott shows how disappearing darkness and starlight are causing or worsening many of our other problems, and offers practical suggestions for how each of us can contribute to solutions. Bettymaya Foott works for the International Dark-Sky Association as director of engagement. Preserving dark skies is her life goal, and she finds that astro-landscape photography is the most poignant way to express a love for the night and to educate about the impacts of light pollution. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Such a beautiful speech! It is exactly what everyone needs to hear. Couldn't have conveyed the message any more clear, especially with all of those stunning photos you captured. Thank you!

Incredible encapsulation Bettymaya! You hit the array of points so clearly. Loved your personal experience too. And excellent example of how bright lights can cast shadows or glare such that you are less able to see. I’m a fan of motion detecting downward facing lights for areas you absolutely need surveillance. thank you!

Very good presentation. Like many viewers, I am less enamored with the "climate change" and "social justice" arguments, than efficient and effective use of resources.

Best talk out there on the subject-- this should be shared widely. Great job, Bettymaya. This will surely have the effect you were hoping for, bringing people the message that dark skies have value, are easy to achieve, and better for everyone and everything from your pocketbook to plants and animals to your health and safety. Love that you brought up the environmental justice issue. Many people have not heard of that before. As soon as people's eyes are open to the ideas you presented, they'll see bad lighting every night when they're out and about.

I wish that you were right. As a very early advocate for Dark Skies, I am encouraged to see a few cities have accepted the need to preserve our night skies, but terribly disappointed at how many more refuse to accept their personal responsibility to do their part to help on this project. Most people refuse to accept the problem, or the expert opinions that inform us that our instinctual desire to add more light for nighttime security is counter intuitive - the light is not necessary. I live in a small town on a small mountain next to a huge city, and the people here claim to be big environmentalists, but moving them on this subject has been very difficult. I'm not giving up, just accepting the reality that no amount of logic will make this happen. People are emotional creatures, and they need to be touched, scared, or forced to make changes.
