1:22 Oh wow, I've just realised that the 4 design is actually from a commissioned overhaul of the channel's logo which was ditched. Looks like it was too late to stop it going out in the news titles. I see they amended it with the proper 4 logo soon after.
For 40 years, this piece of music only had slight changes, like the note pitches. But other than that, it’s literally the same tune for every visual change.
The theme from 2 to 6 was the best reminds me of growing up as a child and teenager. Peter Sissons, Jon Snow, Nicholas Owen etc were the legendary newsreaders. If anything I don't remember the 1st theme at all grew up with the 1 after
Wonder why the original 'Channel 4 News' theme lasted less than a year, and the second theme continued to be used with some modifications, for decades?
I think it was because C4 News was an utter disaster (and that's putting it lightly) in the beginning, so it was completely overhauled, and that included the music.
How long did the first one last for? And were they intending to change the music even at the start of the channel, since they must have had it being composed in order for it to be ready for the end of 1982 on 4th November?
It didn't last very long. Maybe just a few weeks. It has been forgotten that at first Channel 4 News was a disaster. There is another video with some continuity before the first edition Channel 4 News which described it as a "completely new style of news programme". That new style was practically unwatchable and quite soon there were rumours of it getting zero ratings it the viewing figures. This prompted an early major revamp which included putting the presenters behind desks an having the headlines and main stories at the start of the programme as well as as changing the theme music to the one we are familiar with today.
In the early days, the ITA ran channel 4 but now I believe its a seperate thing. C4 was also promoted on ITV and ITV produce programs for C4. ITN have always made the news programs on ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.
Channel 4 News was more in depth than the news on ITV it seems ITV rushed their news programming Channel 4 took their time and had more than just the news and weather
We had all day to work on Channel Four News and the programme was longer. But over on ITV we did News at One, Five Forty Five and News at Ten all on the same shift.
