Just a quick video to let you know what the new name of this channel will be - plus an update on what I've been getting up to. Subscribe to follow my future adventures, whether it's van life or another sailing boat!
Great little update Beth, thanks, the channel name is awesome 👏🏻. Even better news is your consideration of the new boat idea. Please may I ask that take a little time to investigate the Albin Vega. They’re only 27ft and super easy to manoeuvre. There is a very active Vega club in the UK and they’re really helpful. Cheers and hoping that you will have a wonderful festive period in which ever way you celebrate ( should you do so).
If you decide to get another boat, could I recommend a Westerly Centaur. They are fantastic, solid, reliable boats. They are bilge keel so are very shallow draught and obviously can dry at low tide. At 26 feet they are roomy enough for 4 but small enough to easily sail single handed and they sail much better than they look like they should. We have the bigger sister (konsort) but I spent many weeks sailing a centaur and they're great fun. If you find yourself in the Solent area any time look out for Aquarius! She's also crewed by voyaging vegans 👍⛵🥦
@@BethanyIvy plus, there are LOADS of them, great little boats, get a good surveyor though, pay attention to the keel bolts and keel stubs, but other than that there are many good examples
I might be a little biased as I work in a boatyard (narrowboats) but a narrowboat might be a good middleground for you if you want to stay a float but arent open seas confidant. the main issue is during covid restrictions everyone is crying out for narrowboats right now which means the prices are pretty inflated. if you do go that route and find the boat for you, get it surveyed. its about £300-£500 but it'll be a great piece of mind.
The thing about Ivy is it's really strong and grows just about anywhere :) My brother's partner was Bethan, and she was the main lady of the 1960's revolution in the town that I lived in then. We need a revolution now, too. I just wanted to give you some information about the costs of cars vs boats. It can cost more than £1000 a year to keep a car on the road. My boat is on the hard at Port Penrhyn, 22ft, including stands, costs about £66 a month, £150 to haul out or in. The nice thing about Port Penrhyn is, one can also live aboard whilst working on the boat. It's not official yet it seems to be tolerated. It's hard to find that in most places. There is a good cheap supermarket within walking distance although not much in the way of chandlery. Need to order from ebay or similar, as most people do anyway. There are also places around Port Penrhyn where one can anchor for free. Moorings on Anglesey are very inexpensive (sub £200 a year). The harbour at Port Penrhyn cost about the same as on the hard, which is convenient. Best of luck, Adam
Yeah I've been looking into the cost of things, cars can definitely be very expensive and you get much more space for your money with a boat! Food for thought...
As the owner of a camper van and a boat I tend to agree. As long as everything is working. The day to day costs for our boat are not that much (eg only about £50 in diesel for the year) the difference Is repair costs. The boat parts can really get expensive. However we live in the Solent area so prices are kept high for some reason. Keeping an eye on FB market place for things that you may think need replacing and getting used spares early is a great way to save money.

@@saraofnorthwales it's an interesting thought but I don't think it would do much to push my 4.5 ton konsort against the tide over the bar of Chichester harbour. Because of where we are moored we need al least 3 hours range as sailing in and out of Chichester is possible but I wouldn't do it.
Here's a really interesting video made by Sampson Boat Co, just released a few minutes ago, of the very latest Heart-shaped Hybrid Diesel-Electric motor they are about to install in their 100 year old wooden sailboat, based on 25HP Betta Marine - enjoy - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c4UMMQFgmVI.html
you say you might get another boat ? why not keep the one you have and live on that. some marinas alow you to live onboard and if your on low income you can get the morring paid for you
It's far too big for me to be comfortable singlehanding it and the fin keel is impractical in the Bristol Channel. Plus the maintenance is a struggle for me to keep up with on my own and I can't afford to buy Johnathan's share even if I wanted to. I have my eye on a little bilge keeler which would be perfect!
@@BethanyIvy you must be very disappointed having to sell her if you would like to take her out for a sail before she’s sold let me know as I’m in Swansea and only 2 minutes away. If you do get another boat please keep us updated and keep happy in whatever you do next
