Chanute Air Force Base 1980's

For my fellow Chanute Air Force Base friends, I found footage of Chanute from the 1980's on RU-vid. I combined those plus added films from 1988 from Greg Peck (member of the 3345th SPS). There is no sound. I previously had 80's background music, and it was blocked due to copyrights.

I was 19 years old. After boot camp in San Antonio went to electronics school in Oct 1980. at Chanute. It was cold and windy. We would parade to school each morning in the dark with flashlights with yellow tips. General Norma Brown had lunch with us on Thanksgivings day in the enlisted mess. I truly value those days that send me off on a great career path! I am 59 now. Thanks for video !!

@@kshimels Camp Bullis is where the Air Force Security Police has their combat training school, to this day: www.jbsa.mil/campbullis/. It was called Air Base Ground Defense back in the 80's and 90's. Yes, it is an Army post. Air Force, Army and Marines all train there. It's near Lackland. I went through SP school at Lackland then 8 weeks at Bullis. I later returned with my ABGD flight for a joint services exercise there. Grunt school=combat training school.

I was station at Chanute from 2/80 - 8/80 for minute man III missile training. Lots of fond memories. I remember a base open house with the Thunder Birds performing, bands on flat bed trucks playing music on the run way and a semi with more bear taps than I could count. Jet fuel burns on the run way and food galore being served for free. Coming out of BT I was in heaven. I remember seeing Cheap Trick 2x times in the Pit and Ping airmens club. Good times, thanks for the video. I have a friend I met 40 yrs later in life and we found out through discussion we were both at Chanute at the same time. Small world

I worked in a hotel in Champaign in the 1980s. Trainees from Chanute would come down every weekend to take advantage of the military discount on rooms, get drunk, fight, and generally tear the place apart. We tried to work with the base leadership to get the trainees under control, but they were mainly interested in avoiding getting the police involved, to protect the trainees. We eventually had to ban the military from the hotel unless they had travel orders.

Although Chanute beat Lackland by a mile, I didn't like it at the time and couldn't wait to leave. I was no doubt influenced by the cold, dark dreary weather almost the entire time I was there, plus missing my family and friends back home. In retrospect however, it wasn't that bad, and the four months went by much quicker than it seemed at the time. I've stopped by to see the (former) base and Rantoul a few times over the years when I passed through that part of Illinois on 74, and it's been interesting to see the changes. I graduated in Feb '78 and didn't come through that area again until '93, then 2010, and 2020. It's strange seeing what was a well-kept AF base deteriorate over the years.

@@jrgreiner It's the #1 topic during the reunions. Hell the city won't even clean up the west gate missile. Beyond shithole now. So it was the big husky guy-guitar player! How about that. Kicked out, damn. Times sure have changed but I wonder what the regs are like now. One other guy I knew from the 505th was a short Italian kid, vocalist. He sat in on a show we did (NCO Club, I think) and sang Lights-Journey. And sounded like Steve Perry, really good. Mabel's was downtown Champaign on Green Street. A huge band bar, you walked up a flight a steps to get in. Played on a giant stage. The bar you are thinking of across form the main gate was called Hitchin' Post. I played a lot of gigs there, great food also.

@@TommyG179 Well, in my usual humble opinion (ha), Chanute WAS Rantoul. We didn't refer to it as Ran-gulch because it was anything special. I'm honestly surprised it didn't turn into a ghost town after the base closed. I'm sure the state (and feds) pumped a shit ton of money into the town after closure to at least keep it afloat but I'd also assume that well has long ago dried up. I personally never thought much of the city itself (if you want to call it that), so it doesn't surprise me at all they don't give two shits about what used to be Chanute. Yeah, I'm sure they talk a good game, but we know where talking goes.... Anyhoo......short, Italian kid? Hmm....that doesn't sound familiar to me. Between '83 and '87? I'm trying to remember the male singers that were there when I was and I don't remember any fitting that description. No biggie! There were some that came (and went just as fast) and there were other guys in the band who were there before I got there and spent years there after I got out! Hell yes.....now I remember Mabel's in Champaign! Also remember the Hitchin' Post. Holy crap......like revisiting a previous life!

@@jrgreiner I'm 6'4 so let's call him average height lol. I'm half Italian and he and I once talked about our pasta sauces at a party in Chapman Courts. Really good vocals, Steve Perry range. Maybe he went through fast? I don't know. There was a also female 505th singer that I met, short/skinny, pretty brunette, never heard her sing. Rantoul still has a breakfast spot that my wife and I go to when we are there for reunions called Ott's. Same menu as back in the 80's, grill behind the counter. My wife is from Rantoul, class of 88 or 89.

@RenoSlim I went to the Aircraft Electrical Systems school in the Fall of 1979. Do you remember that challenging schematic, Figure 19, in Block 5? The first two weeks, we were in the old wooden barracks before transferring to brand new dorms. The commander at TIPS (Training Information Periods) told us that without an active war going on approximately 90% of all personnel injuries in the Air Force occurred during off-duty hours. An hour later I saw a guy break his collarbone playing touch football within the first few moments he was in a pickup game.

Stationed at Chanute twice once in 81 for fuels (POL) and again in 87 when I cross trained to Aircraft Electrical Systems Specialist. Not my favorite base and was kind of glad to see it close. In 1987 I lived off base with my wife in a run down trailer park. I felt like the locals didnt like the military presence and took advantage of the military. I had a landlord try to keep my $300 security deposit for a burnt out light in the fridge. Had to file a complaint with base housing office to get my money back. Went from there to Myrtle Beach AFB and loved it. Really hated to see Myrtle Beach close. Retired after 23 years and many bases and Chanute was the worst.
