Chaos and Crash at the Dragon

Crazy run through the tail after catching up to a 81 year old man in a C8 Corvette. C8 passes a couple bikes and gets chased by the crf450l supermoto(me) and a R6. After a few turns the C8 pulls over and we pick up the pace a little more. Rider of the R6 was very skilled just took a wrong line on the turn coming up to gravity cavity. Rider was ok, got his bike out, dad had cable ties and he tied up his front plastics together and the rider road the bike back to where they were staying.

When I lived in that area for almost 30 years, I never knew the road was referred to by some as the Tail of the Dragon. All the locals just called it Deals Gap Road. It's a pretty good ride, but can get monotonous. There's a lot of roads up in the mountains that are much more fun.

Definitely! 28 right off deals gap used to be my favorite road and the cherohola skyway is far superior for those with bigger bikes looking to cruise it comfortably! The whole area is beautiful and everyone there is so nice!

i thought the Dragon was a scenic roadway. i have seen to many riders running it like a racetrack, it sucks when they crash, but some have to learn the hard way. glad the guy is ok, his bike is f'd up. looked like his rear tire slipped on the double yellow going into the turn, oh well, he'll live to ride another day. this time.
@duanenichols2703
@duanenichols2703 Год назад
Got to remember yellow and white highway painted lines are slick because of the additive so they reflect at night. You notice when leaving a red light or stop sign that occasionally your tires will spin when exiting on these lines.

Once you've reached the center line on the apex of a curve, you have already lost control. The "slipperiness" of the stripe, when already entering the oncoming lane is the problem!? His earlier toying with the Corvette showed wrecklessness and immaturity. This is a lesson for him, hope can learn it.

I've seen this a lot on the Dragon...novice riders thinking that watching "Biker Boyz" makes them International Sportbike Track superstars. That rider takes no accountability for anyone other than themselves. He's lucky...and stupid. Had there been a rider coming in the opposite direction, he'd have taken them out, too. The Dragon has lost it's edge because of careless riders who don't belong there. Enjoy the Dragon but ride within your abilities. It might not be just you who gets hurt.

There's always wrecks on the Dragon, I live in the area, but don't go up there much anymore because of idiots who think it's a racetrack. The speed limit is 30 MPG for a reason, it's not a racetrack, there's not many roads crossing the mtn getting from TN to NC and back, trucks and cars use that road, oil is leaked on the road, rocks and debris is pushed on the edges from cars and trucks cutting corners too sharp, plus little or no cell service up there. Lot of bad spots in the pavement as well. I know a wrecker operator that makes good money pulling bikes out of the woods and from the side of the mtn.

Could see that coming a mile away - head over outside bar on corners, bad lines, bad body positioning, a recipe for running wide, panicking and locking the front. Glad he is okay. Time for some lessons from CSS before the next outing.

Did you notice his brake fluid level. I doubt he cut a brake line with that slow slide, doubt it leaked out either. Just riding around low on brake fluid.

Any time you're in a curve, cross that yellow ribbon you run the risk of siding. Same with snakes in the road(tar stripes)

This is why I hate roads like this. I’ll definitely never travel this highway. Doesn’t matter how careful you are or how safely you control your bike, you’ll never know what idiot might be lurking around a blind corner waiting to crash into you.

The dragon gets another unskilled rider that with each curve they get braver and braver until their bravado exceeds their talent. Corvette guy should have just blown the horn when he went by and waved.

When I was young, we would race from the lake side of the Dragon to the old motel at the other end. There was rarely any traffic on the road back then, so it was like having a personal racing course most of the time. However, times have changed, and the area is too commercialized and too heavily trafficked. There are many better rides which are far more enjoyable, such as the Cherohala Skyway and then on to Cherokee, NC or taking Hwy 68 South from Madisonville, TN to McCaysville, GA.
