Chaos and Crash at the Dragon 

A world class bike on a world class road doesn't make you a world class rider.

When I lived in that area for almost 30 years, I never knew the road was referred to by some as the Tail of the Dragon. All the locals just called it Deals Gap Road. It's a pretty good ride, but can get monotonous. There's a lot of roads up in the mountains that are much more fun.

Dude in the vette was hanging tuff! I dont blame him for tapping out after it got squirrelly. He was sitting on some major hp! Dude with camera, u sir r my new hero!

i thought the Dragon was a scenic roadway. i have seen to many riders running it like a racetrack, it sucks when they crash, but some have to learn the hard way. glad the guy is ok, his bike is f'd up. looked like his rear tire slipped on the double yellow going into the turn, oh well, he'll live to ride another day. this time.

Got to remember yellow and white highway painted lines are slick because of the additive so they reflect at night. You notice when leaving a red light or stop sign that occasionally your tires will spin when exiting on these lines.

He's lucky he slid into a ditch and not an oncoming car. So much for frame sliders. Good job stopping and helping him pick up his Yamaha R6. Glad the rider's okay.

This happened to a friend of mine. He says "I'm OK I'm OK" then his eyes roll back and he's gone from internal bleeding, right there on the road. It was a light layer of sand that had washed over the road, you couldn't see it.

Going next week, wife and i will be one of the Harleys getting passed by the speedsters! Happy 27th Anniversary babe!

That area has claimed many bikes and other motorized machines. I’m from NC. Me and my buddies used to ride up there all the time together. I used to take my 2008 Buell 1125R up there and get crazy. Good video and glad that other rider is okay.

Where did the rider that crashed find a helmet to fit his giant yellow head?

He took the right curve too early forcing him to straighten up and slow down. He lost his line as OP said. Very lucky on coming traffic was absent.

I've seen this a lot on the Dragon...novice riders thinking that watching "Biker Boyz" makes them International Sportbike Track superstars. That rider takes no accountability for anyone other than themselves. He's lucky...and stupid. Had there been a rider coming in the opposite direction, he'd have taken them out, too. The Dragon has lost it's edge because of careless riders who don't belong there. Enjoy the Dragon but ride within your abilities. It might not be just you who gets hurt.

Wanna play gonna pay. Mistake was, on/inside the white line ... doesnt take much debris on an inch+ of a tire to put you down. Part of rad riding is sooner or later you're gonna go down. Been there, done that.

I grew up on the N.C side of The Dragon and I've been over it a hundred times but never on a motorcycle. You got to have a death wish to do that.

Show your insurance company how you were intentionally driving recklessly and exceeding the speed limit. Let's see if they pay your claim and keep insuring you.

The county had to buy a special vehicle just to rescue all the Evel Knievels who ride their bikes off into the trees and down the mountain.

When you go to the dragon be careful not to touch those splitter lines, they are slippery

just watching the lean angles on the lead rider, you know there's no margin for error, or sand, or rocks, wet pavement, or someone else over the center line, or an accident in your lane or, ... if you want to ride that hard, go to a track. when you lose the front end, pretty hard to recover on a public highway. potential Darwin Award.

He rode above his ability. You could see it thru most of those curves. I know I have rode the dragon. It will bite you in a split second. Glad he’s alright and went off to the upper side the low side could have been tragic.

Those of us living in these mountains know there are infinite roads to ride besides #129. Hell, just across the lake is #143! Anywho, us locals have long known weekends up here are chock-full of thrill seekers from parts unknown, so we find the plethora of alternate twisties……or enjoy Deals Gap when it’s less “volatile” lol. All that said, it is fun watching all the various machines rumble thru TOD……if you can find a safe place to chill.

Done The Dragon many, many times in my Porsche 911 and my Ducati MultiStrada and seen crashes and it’s always the same 2 reasons, 1) yellow lines are like oil slicks (this one) and going to close to the dirt off paved sides. The worst is seeing a couple slide right off into a ravine. People are total idiots By the way ride The Snake 421 much nicer run

The asphalt through the Gap isn't what it used to be. Also, you've got to stay off the painted lines when leaned over. This fellow got right on the white fog line and that's when the crash began.

Went down the dragon by mistake in a mercury gran marquis with my 80 year old mother. Had to pull over several times but what a ride. The old merc made it.

Hopefully, the bike can't be ridden for a while. I'm glad he's not hurt, but that road is not a racetrack.

We are the people who need to use OUR freakin road to get to work; to get from Tennessee to NC and back. We are the people who are not required by law, nor inclined, to bow to your insanity. If you have a problem with that, go rent some track time.

Trajectory error, the biker is on the right entering the curve on the right. He should be right next to the yellow line

There's always wrecks on the Dragon, I live in the area, but don't go up there much anymore because of idiots who think it's a racetrack. The speed limit is 30 MPG for a reason, it's not a racetrack, there's not many roads crossing the mtn getting from TN to NC and back, trucks and cars use that road, oil is leaked on the road, rocks and debris is pushed on the edges from cars and trucks cutting corners too sharp, plus little or no cell service up there. Lot of bad spots in the pavement as well. I know a wrecker operator that makes good money pulling bikes out of the woods and from the side of the mtn.

Why complain that some didn't pull over for you? It's not a race track it's a public highway.

I like to open up my Soul on the Dragon, but I do it off season so there are little to no others on the road.

Brake fluid reservoir!!! Not enough fluid. When cranked over, may allow air into master cylinder! Could this have contributed? Apexed too early, ran wide, is what happened. But just a thought.

This is what happens when you ride the Dragon like a fool. He's beyond lucky no one was approaching in the opposite lane.

Could see that coming a mile away - head over outside bar on corners, bad lines, bad body positioning, a recipe for running wide, panicking and locking the front. Glad he is okay. Time for some lessons from CSS before the next outing.

This is why I hate roads like this. I’ll definitely never travel this highway. Doesn’t matter how careful you are or how safely you control your bike, you’ll never know what idiot might be lurking around a blind corner waiting to crash into you.

The dragon gets another unskilled rider that with each curve they get braver and braver until their bravado exceeds their talent. Corvette guy should have just blown the horn when he went by and waved.

What an odd crash, almost looks like he grabbed the front brake on the yellow line, luckily he hit the mountain instead of open air. You get some good lean angle on your supermoto!

Well done on how you reacted, helped out. That chap was super lucky that the road was empty. Not going to comment on his riding, the result speaks for itself. But well done on your calm and cool reaction.

He could've done that so much sooner if the Corvette used one of the earlier pullover spots.
