I’ve been looking for a series like this for ages, thank you so much 🙏 I’ve watched as many chaplain videos as I can to get as much info as I can, but this is the best I’ve found so far. Only thing is, I’m not a US citizen yet, but have recently emigrated across from the UK. You said in the video that different requirements can be waived, but I’m assuming this is a pretty standard across the board requirement?
@TheTattooedChap
@TheTattooedChap 4 года назад
Thank you for the kind words! To your question: there are always waivers available, and with each the circumstances vary on what is waiverable--on a case-by-case basis. It would definitely be worth talking to Chap Recruiter to see what is currently waiverable or if there is a program for expediting stuff in your situation. Blessings on your journey and keep me informed! I love following people's journeys!

The Tattooed Chap, thanks very much, I will look online for a chaplain recruiter and see what they say. I’m in the final year of my BA in ministry, so was very interested to hear about the chaplain candidate program you mentioned on another video, and if you have any recommendations for seminaries then I would greatly appreciate it. I also don’t know if you have done any videos on what to expect from active duty on tour, and responsibilities and risk in the frontline and what that entails exactly. Thanks again :)

@@realtomic I'll look into doing a vid like that. There's so many options with seminaries. I think it depends on a lot of factors. My recommendation:1) find one that has flexible scheduling throughout the year, 2) one that will honors your faith tradition, 3) one that understands military chaplaincy, and 4) cheap(er) is always nice. hahaha...

Great video man, I found you on Twitter yesterday and now your video showed up as a suggested video on RU-vid! Working on my fitness now and would like to try and join the candidate program while I finish the MDiV program. It has long been a calling of mine to serve the military as a chaplain, but life has taken me in a few different directions. I stopped attending seminary back in 2013 with 21 hours towards the 72, obtained a different Master's degree in business, have found quite a bit of success in the insurance industry, yet serving our service members and their families is what both excites and burdens me - it's what I think about at night. I am restarting seminary in the fall, and hope to drop the final 20-30 pounds (down from 80) by that time as well - I am trying out a Crossfit course tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes! Also, my son convinced me that we needed a punching bag in the garage, so now he thinks he is my coach because he wants to help me get to my goals. Anyways, just wanted to thank you for the encouragement and thank you for your service, you're an inspiration for those of us who have heard the calling.

Right on! That's exciting! My journey is similar...with getting distracted for a few years due to some obstacles and I gained weight during that time too. But, I got focused, and with God's and my wife's help was able to get back on track. All I have to say is this: keep running the race brother! You got this! I'm here to cheer you on as well. Is there anything I can do to help? Blessings!

Thanks for all the videos. I’m currently debating between the Army or the Navy/USMC to serve as a Chaplain. What would you say are the distinct things about serving in the army as opposed to the other branches, or just distinct Army Chaplain life. Can you choose your units? Deployment lengths and tempo. What else makes the Army a good or distinct decision?
@TheTattooedChap
@TheTattooedChap 4 года назад
Awesome! I think any branch could be amazing. I know a bit about the Navy, but I am not super familiar with it. The Army cares about your professional development (you will have an opportunity to earn another MA or DMIN, or attend CPE, in your career), I think this is pretty cool. You can request the types of units and locations, and typically one of the two can be accommodated--depending limiting factors. Currently combat deployments are winding down, but there 6-12 month deployments around the globe available. One thing I know that is distinct with Army chaplaincy is the proximity you have with the average soldier, so ministry opportunities are vast. Navy has a much more distinct divide between the enlisted and officer corps. For instance, I helped put up tents with my soldiers last week while in the field, and relationships are built doing these types of things. Navy chaplains likely wouldn't be found doing this sort of thing.

@TheTattooedChap
@TheTattooedChap 4 года назад
I am not aware of waivers for this, but again, I think it is worthwhile talking to a chap recruiter as they have the inside scoop on current waivers being offered and maybe some work arounds. Fo me, I had a MA in Theology & Culture (48 credits) and found a school (Southwestern Assembly of God Uni) that transferred 42 credits into their M.Div. program...That could be option maybe? But, really, contact a chap recruiter. You can text "chaplain" to goarmy (462769) and one will reach out to you. Blessings on your journey & let me know if I can offer any other help!

Thank you for the video! I'm wondering if you believe that it is important for a chaplain to have served before (either enlisted or commissioned as an officer)? As someone entering the seminary and considering chaplaincy, do you think that my not having previous military experience will hold me back? Thanks in advance.

I work long hours in insurance sales and it is hard to be motivated to workout when I get home. What advice do you have to get oneself motivated, and over that hump when you get home from work to work out? I need to lose weight and gain strength so I can join the ANG as a chaplain candidate in the fall. Thank you, I have been following you on Instagram for a while.
@TheTattooedChap
@TheTattooedChap 4 года назад
Hey! I think there are a few things. First, motivation is overrated because it is tied to our emotions and feelings. Instead of motivation, start to develop discipline. Discipline is the doing the thing even when you do not want to do it. So, begin to discipline yourself with baby steps. 10 pushups when you get home, no matter what. Or, no eating after 700pm, no matter what. Or, go for a run after work before you go home, just 1 mile everyday no matter what. Build this stuff into your routine. Then build off of that. For instance, I do 10 pull-ups every time I go into my garage. Second, I think have a partner to workout with is important. You're forced to meet with them. Third, put your dream/calling in front of you to remind you. Like a picture on a mirror, or something like that. Fourth, give yourself a goal. Like, if you've never ran a 5k race, sign up for one and start training for it. Lastly, make your fitness journey fun. I listen to audiobooks and podcasts when I run, things I really enjoy listening to. It makes me want to go run so I can listen to the next chapter! Hopefully, these can help a bit. Keep it up! You can do it!

Struggling a bit to lose a little more weight so that I can even go to MEPS. I'm in seminary and meet pretty much every requirement you mentioned. My CH recruiter wants my weight right where it needs. Got any tips or even some motivation you can throw at me brother? 😊
@TheTattooedChap
@TheTattooedChap 4 года назад
Keep on going! A few things that have been helpful for me: 1) jumprope: It burns more calories than running and easier on the joints for us older folks. I have a TV set up in my garage and jump in there. It's pretty much my rule, if I watch TV I have to be jumping rope. When I first started I's jump for 40 seconds, rest for 20 seconds. 2) When I run I listen to good audiobooks or podcasts that I don't want to quit listening to, it motivates me to run more. 3) weight loss is less about exercise (though it helps) and is more to do with diet. I recommend taking a few days to honestly track your calorie intake. Keeping it at roughly 2000 for maintenance weight, and down to 1800 for weight loss. By doing this you learn which foods are "worth eating" calorie wise. For example, it is easier to forego the two slices of pizza when you realize you can have two eggs, 2 bacon strips, a banana, and toast. You can do this! Many have before you, and remember that all journeys start with a single step. Just keep stepping in the right direction and you'll get there. Blessings!

It wasn't too difficult, though I went from AD to Reserves to Nat Guard to AD. So, I transition from the Guard may look a bit different. I had to get a DA Form signed (cannot remember which one) by our State's Adjutant General (I think it only needs to be an O-6 though but my State required higher). The Conditional Release and Commissioning Physical were the two hardest things, the rest was just gathering paper. Then I had to resubmit another chap packet to the board for approval again. In all I started in late Sept and got the nod in early Jan. But I am also a bit tenacious and probably bothered my chap recruiter a bit too much.

That is a tricky question as I know your tradition's ordination to the priesthood is different compared to most Protestant denominations. They way I understand it is that the Army wants two years ministry experience post-MDiv (or equivalent) degree--but they do allow waivers (I got one). I know that we have several LDS chaplains in the Army (and could use more based on the statistical makeup of the Army), so there is a path.
