oh wow... if this gets other comments, they likely won't be as kind as I'll be. I wonder when this interview was done because Robert did not look good here, it couldn't have been more than a couple years after he did this movie. Despite the shape he was in, I'm still in awe with how he explains himself and Chaplin. The man himself defies description and likely, he'll be the only person about to come close to explaining Chaplin.
I think this might be from "Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin" from 2003. I know it did premiere on TCM so that would make sense. In any case, I agree, RDJ didn't just play the role and split, he really seemed to embrace Chaplin and do his homework. And it is great that he's doing so much better now. :)
@@TheCinematicPackrat1 Yeah, it also struck me that this must be just before he got clean. His role as Chaplin is still one of the best performances I have seen on screen.
It’s great to hear Robert Downey, Jr. talking about Charlie Chaplin. Plus he’s amazing in Chaplin. Honestly, I wish won the Academy Award for Chaplin. I know Pacino won for Scent of a Woman, but that was more due to him not having an Academy Award at that point after so many nominations. Denzel Washington was great in Malcolm X as was Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven, but Downey, Jr. as Charlie Chaplin just sticks with me more than the other nominees.

The one thing attenborough failed to realize or perhaps overlook, was that Charlie had beaming, bright, crystal blue eyes. Had they simply given him contact lenses he would have been an indecipherable. Insanely good performance regardless but damn, the blue eyes would have sold it.
