Chappaquiddick was an incredible film. It’s been half a century since 1969, and I’m here to explain the significance of the Chappaquiddick Incident a little better. It effectively ended the Kennedy family’s long political supremacy, perfectly in time for American to have a steady conservative shift from the 1970s onward

Wiki: Chappaquiddick (titled The Senator in the UK)[4] is a 2017 American drama film directed by John Curran, and written by Taylor Allen and Andrew Logan. The film stars Jason Clarke as Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy and Kate Mara as Mary Jo Kopechne, with Ed Helms, Bruce Dern, Jim Gaffigan, Clancy Brown, and Olivia Thirlby in supporting roles. The plot details the 1969 Chappaquiddick incident in which Kennedy drove his car into Poucha Pond, killing Kopechne, as well as the Kennedy family's response. Principal photography began in Boston, in September 2016. The film originally premiered at the Gala Presentations section at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2017,[5] and was released in the United States on April 6, 2018, by Entertainment Studios.[6] It received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for its balanced screenplay and Clarke's performance

Several years ago National Lampoon (a humor magazine) ran a fake VW ad about the VW Beetle. The ad showed a picture of a Beetle floating in a pond and a bridge with a broken rail and the headline said "If Ted Kennedy had been driving a VW he'd be president today." The text talked about the Bug's unibody construction and how this made it nearly air tight and would actually float. The text ended with something like, "A Beetle won't float forever because, like Ted Kennedy, it's only 98.9% airtight."

Wow, that is crazy !! Can you imagine National Lampoon doing something like that today? It would be taken down before it went to print. If it did go to print, there would be quite a few people that would lose their jobs. Maybe even a law suit. It's very dark humor but that must have been published at a time when comedy was allowed to be dark.

I have driven over that bridge. Which has long since been replaced. We used to call it Kennedy's car wash. To get over the channel between Chappaquiddick and Edgartown in Martha's Vineyard. It required a very strong ferry called the "on time" to get you back and forth to both sides because the current was so very strong...Swimming across this channel is very difficult for a experienced swimmer. I spent a lot of time there in the mid 1970s and talked to lots of people there about this.

This is the most obvious, and most likely, answer. Legally, there is a vast difference in how the law treats a car accident that results in death depending on whether or not the operator was intoxicated. Had he reported the accident immediately, there would have been some sort of field sobriety test administered, or blood sample taken.

There are interviews with Fords great grandson as well as interviews with Shelby and others involved with the project. The first model car that I ever built was of the Ford GT40. I don't see the point of doing "Once Upon a Time" because it is pure fantasy and the main characters of the film (DiCaprio and Pitt) don't exist.

I heard another version of the story: that the real. reason Ted Kennedy didn’t report the accident for nine hours was because he didn’t know about it. It seems he and Mary Jo were having a drive round in his car when he spotted a police car. Not wishing to be seen with her because of an election campaign coming up, he decided to get out of the car and walk, and told her to drive his car onto the mainland and park it. It was a car she wasn’t used to driving, and wasn’t used to the route or the narrow bridge. It would seem that he was lying to cover up the fact that he was trying to cover things up. I find this story more believable than that one person could escape from the car but not the other, or that he was in shock for nine hours, or why he would deliberately leave it for nine hours before reporting it.

I have to keep telling people that the sobriquet "Lion of the Senate", while sounding like a compliment, really isn't. It's what the French call a "compliment gaucher", or what we here in the US call a left-handed compliment. If you think about it, you can easily comprehend why. Sure, a lion looks regal and majestic, has a ferocious roar, etc., but in the animal kingdom lions are also known for spending a preponderance of their time lazing around in idleness, preferring to leave the brunt of the pride's strenuous work, such as hunting, to the lionesses. Pretty damned drole comment, if you ask me.

McGovern was also a bit of a neoliberal centrist before it was cool (or at least he took a "triangulation" position between neoliberalism, old school New Deal policies, and appealing to more moderate student activists as a base). The "demogrant" was a Libertarian-ish response to welfare programs and would reduce people's felt need to collectively bargain if wages stagnated.

MLK and Thomas Paine were in favour of something like the demogrant, hardly neoliberals. In any case how would a UBI reduce the desire for collective bargaining? If anything it would strength workers by providing them with additional economic security. It also stands in stark contrast the the means tested welfare approach, of welfare in neoliberal era UK and USA which in the case of the first state run antithetical to the ideals of the Beveridgian welfare state.

Joe Kennedy Jr.'s flight was experimental, in that it involved remotely activating an explosion. But what is more interesting is the goal of his mission -- to destroy the little known super weapon the V3. The V-3 was an extremely long-barreled super gun dug into the coast to fire across the Channel into London (worth reseaching!). The allies found out later that the gun was destroyed in a raid prior to Kennedy's to death, so sadly, it appears he died needlessly.

Ted Kennedy wasn't driving the car. He was drunk, the off duty deputy called out, they took off down a dirt road, at some point before reaching the Dike Bridge Ted stopped and got out and told Mary Jo to drive back, as he was drunk and couldn't afford to be collared for DWI, Mary Jo was accustomed to driving a VW Bug, she lost control and went over the side. Ted Kennedy wasn't even in the vehicle. Its almost impossible to open doors while submerged. Wha did he do? Open the door, exit, then close the door behind him? Why did the diver report there were air pockets in the car? I do believe Ted jumped in a number of times to no avail. Its just my opinion, but I've responded to lots of vehicle accidents over the years including a couple of submerged in water whose currents were far weaker than Chappaquiddick. I have to ask how he opened his door. Then if he closed it? That story makes no sense.

He was drunk. She was drunk. He lost control of the vehicle. He had spent his priviledged life with easy access and familiarity with water and was a strong swimmer. He just saved himself and didn't even think once about her, let alone twice, Then later on, he had handlers for damage-control, and they took care of everything except for the speech he had to make to say he was sorry, which I am sure he was--- for himself. Also, he had no intention of running for president: that would have put a big target on his back for every attention-seeking nutjob out there to aim at. There is no "Kennedy Curse", just a run of bad luck and too much media attention. The Kennedys were a mixed bag; some great, some not, and some gone too soon. You know, like, humans only with money and fame. End of story.

Growing up in an Irish American Catholic household in Kansas City, and given both my parents were born in 1960, the only president we loved more in my House than JFK was Harry Truman, for local reasons. This immediately made me like Ted Kennedy a lot, and I was sad when he died in 09, but I hadn’t even HEARD about Chappaquiddick until at least two years later, when my 8th grade history teacher mentioned it (and I think I was the only one in class who payed attention). The Kennedy’s Clinton’s and Bush’s offer a simple lesson. Elect your representatives based on their merit and not their family legacy or name recognition. Political dynasties are a threat to freedom as it creates an environment of political grooming as the previous generation passes their agenda to the next who feel a sense of responsibility to that generation and entitlement as they then expect to gain power on the strength of their name rather than deeds.

I wish that I watched the same movie as you did. Apart from being a tasteful retelling of events, I never understood why the filmmakers were telling this story. There are a few hints about how the privileged class always protecting themselves at the expense of their victims, but those ideas aren't explored with any depth on screen. The film lacked a thesis for why it was telling the audience this particular story.

I was 9 years old when this happened. Like the Kennedy's, I come from an east-coast, Irish-Catholic family (although we were a bit more southern, living in Alexandria, VA, just across the Potomac River, outside of Washington, DC). Now, in 1969, living outside DC, going to a Catholic, private school where most of my friends had at least one parent who worked for the government or on K-Street as a lobbyist or on the Hill as a staffer, politics was EVERYWHERE....politics even worked its way into the conversations of 9 year olds. When Chappaquiddick happened, ALL my friends, all of whom came from democrat families (I think there were only two republicans in my school: myself and one other kid from down the street), were alarmed, to say the least. I couldn't understand it. They acted like it was THEIR father, uncle or brother who was involved, like they had some personal, vested family interest in the accident. I didn't understand it then and I don't understand it now. Maybe it was some kind of psychological transference, some kind of identity-validation thing....or maybe in their desperation to seem older, wiser and more mature, they were just feigning the attitude they saw demonstrated by their parents and elder siblings around the dining room table at night.

Yeah I didn’t really get the point of the movie other than the rich abusing people and getting away with it. But with Ted Kennedy it’s more complicated because the guy most likely had PTSD from how he was raised and the depression and sadness from seeing so many family members die. I’m biased because I love the senator but what happened there is inexcusable. I wish the film would have dived deeper-no pun intended-into what this did to not only his career but to the country in terms of how progressive Ted Kennedy was and how he could never move beyond the senate. Or it could be tied more into sexism or Me Too-but the movie doesn’t really go there-it kind of goes nowhere other than being a hatchet job on Ted Kennedy over something he did wrong, deeply regretted and ruined his political and probably rest of his alcohol heavy induced life.

@@CynicalHistorian I'll watch for it in a month. I did enjoy the movie well enough, but unfortunately it made the cardinal mistake of having people like Robert the Bruce not act like people in the middle ages would at times. Particularly on his wedding night. HBO's Rome masterfully gave their character's personalities that matched the time period and still make them likable.
