Ian Chappell was a great captain, extremely astute as captain & also as a commentator, very loyal, fantastic at getting the best out of players as captain, and inspired loyalty. However, let's face it, if you don't suck up to Ian Chappell like Shane Warne & Michael Clarke, actual records e.g. win % and facts go out the window. Steve Waugh becomes "the most selfish player," although there is no basis for this claim, no example can be provided. Shane Warne who has never had an original thought, just parrots the Chappell vendetta. Michael Clarke sucks up to Warne and Chappell, therefore he becomes the best captain according to Ian since Mark Taylor, despite having the worst win % and ongoing dissatisfaction within the team. Give us a break.
There's a lot of truth to what you write. No Bradman in this series despite captaining the Invincibles and having a stellar record in the Ashes is another example. Underneath, however the reasons for Chappell's antipathy to these people is more complex then him just having a bias or three. Chappell has an outstanding cricketing intellect and we should take that into account in these videos.
No basis for this claim? I don’t necessarily agree with everything Chappell says but he has given plenty of examples over the years of why he thinks Steve Waugh was a selfish player. As I say, you can agree or disagree with his conclusion based on his examples but to say ‘no basis for this claim’ is somewhat misleading. As for Shane Warne, undoubtedly one of the greatest bowlers ever but also IMO one of the greatest boof-heads ever to hold a cricket ball, but for you to say he has never had an original thought, now this sounds to me more like a gratuitous remark without basis. If you demand evidence from others you should hold yourself to the same standard.
