Any plant, animal, or petroleum grease or oil can be used to make "extended burn" tinder fire starters or grease lamps. Let me demonstrate a fire starter with Tulip Poplar Bark and some Chapstick that I found on the Walking Trail today.

I EDC the original Chapstick. I use it for several things in addition to chapped lips. Chapstick works great to protect the blades on your carbon steel knifes. Just a lite coating onto the metal surface. It’s food grade so safe for those who like to peel apples. I’ve also added Chapstick to tinder and kenneling to assist with fire starting. It really doesn’t take much, just smear some on and provide ignition. Another great tip from the David West channel. Thanks for sharing! - Tennessee Smoky

Absolutely. And the form factor couldn't be more appropriate.

That's how Suzie Chapstick made fire on the slopes to keep warm. I consider Chapstick a priority in my EDC.

I find chapsticks and lighters on the walking trail a lot. They must be bouncing out of pockets from all the jogging and bike riding.

Dave thank you - I am a city boy and vet, I enjoy you information as I think the ability to make fire is going to be lost if we do not keep it in practice. From the ARMY I have learned that we have an unnatural hold on what is normal in nature. You have a good grasp on this.

I really enjoy using different greases and oils for fires. I've used chapstick, it works great and I always have some with me. Sometimes I use it for my lips too! Lol!!! Thanks again David!!! God bless!!

I’ve only ever used it a couple of times in my life. Lol! I know people that use them all Winter long.

Just a heads up for ya. I watch your videos all the way to the end and when I go to your channel's 'Videos' Tab, many of them do not have the red bar all the way to the right meaning I didn't watch until the end - But I did!!! This is not just your channel but everyone's. I don't know why youtube is so wonky but it is.

Good stuff. I keep that stuff on me and in my small first aid kit. Have you ever tried using mink oil? I've made some mink oil cotton balls and they work very well and the mink oil I use on my leather boots and its great for haversacks and field packs for repelling water. BTW- I made some of the cotton coal extenders after watching the video and they work great. Thanks for the instruction and be safe out there-

I can imagine, mink oil would be a good one.

Thanks David; I was wondering about Carmex and Chapstick. I know you can get small tubes of Vaseline and Carmex; probably would go well in a lightweight fire kit and avoid the mess of storing the cotton balls with Vaseline in a small plastic bag.

It's good to know common everyday items that can be used for extended burn. I wonder if the pomade from the tin you're using to make charred material can be used too since it's main component is petrolatum.

Hi David.. I'm from eastern Maine and we don't have the species of trees here as you have in your area.. Can you shed any light on the northeast varieties?? Eastern white cedar, Spruce, Balsam fir, White or Red Pine for soft woods or Maple, Oak, Ash on the hardwood side?? I'd never heard of a fire roll before I saw your videos. It works like a champ as long as you can get 2 reasonably flat surfaces.. Thanks for all your info.. ..JW..

Any wood nicely degraded and dry will produce and ember from hand and bow drill friction. You can scrape and shave the woods to ignite with a Ferro Rod. See my fire roll playlist.

Hi David, I love all your videos and I have a question for you... Have you ever made fire with a fire roll using instead of ash or coal, using wood sawdust? Greeting from Venezuela.
