“Chasing the Moon,” a film by Robert Stone, reimagines the race to the moon for a new generation, upending much of the conventional mythology surrounding the effort. The series recasts the Space Age as a fascinating stew of scientific innovation, political calculation, media spectacle, visionary impulses and personal drama. Utilizing a visual feast of previously overlooked and lost archival material - much of which has never before been seen by the public - the film features a diverse cast of characters who played key roles in these historic events. Among those included are astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Frank Borman and Bill Anders; Sergei Khrushchev, son of the former Soviet premier and a leading Soviet rocket engineer; Poppy Northcutt, a 25-year old “mathematics whiz” who gained worldwide attention as the first woman to serve in the all-male bastion of NASA’s Mission Control; and Ed Dwight, the Air Force pilot selected by the Kennedy administration to train as America’s first black astronaut.
Part three begins with Nixon's inauguration just a few months before the Apollo 11 crew begins their journey to the moon.

The arms race: “My German rocket scientists can beat your German rocket scientists.”

Except this race was to beat swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks, for the benefit of the entire human future. What's your problem with this?

jim oberg None. It’s just that the “German rocket scientist” became a trope. So in the 1960s sort of dark satire, post WW-II, both sides had “German rocket scientists”. Not a comment on the proxy war of the space race.

@@larryscott3982 -- Thanks for the thoughtful, civil response. Further thoughts: Freeman Dyson and other historians have written persuasively that the net effect of the V-2 program was Germany collapsing six months or more sooner due to the crushing demand for high-tech equipment and rare hi-energy fuels, that if applied to more conventional weapons could have lengthened the war leading to millions more fatalities in Europe and tens of millions in the Pacific -- including inter alia my father and uncles. So be GRATEFUL the von Braun team diverted Hitler from far more effective weapons [Speer in his memoirs confirms this ‘mistake’]. I’ll take any such happy result, inadvertent or not - and we don’t have to forget the V-2’s victims in London and the slave cave factories. The non-existence of the V-2 wouldn’t have saved such losses, it would have multiplied them. Every V-2 built was a dozen fighter jets not built, a hundred anti-aircraft rockets not built, a squad of Tiger tanks not built. The cold-blooded calculus of casualties is morally complex.

If any other country had safely landed men on the moon and returned them to Earth, the date id rtge landing would immediately have vbeenb named a national holidy to ve commemorated annually with ceremony, pageantry and solemnity. Not in America. It has largely been forgotten, yet it is theone thing we are certain to be remembered for in ten thousand years. Make July 20 a national holiday!

You can watch it in its entirety using Prime Starz channel. Or I guess you could just watch it using Starz on your cable plan. I went off the cable grid years ago and I only stream now so I watched it using my Prime/Starz channel.

Can't PBS get off the cry baby train of there political taxpayer paid view point and just play the film of this great achievement of our space program and how proud it made American's feel back then and today?
@jimoberg3326
@jimoberg3326 5 лет назад
No, they obviously can't. Not just PBS -- unanimous mass media acceptance of the factually-challenged narrative of “racist rejection of Ed Dwight’s rightful astronaut career.” Dwight graduated from the two USAF aerospace test pilot courses and was then assigned to an AF test pilot project, was nominated by the USAF for astronaut selection, but was never even picked by NASA [among other things, he was several inches too short to fly the Apollo 'Lunar Module'].

I was listening to NPR on Thursday in an Uber. All they talked about is how the women of NASA were treated unfairly- especially the woman of color (of course). Nothing about the actual risk or motivation or skill or limited technology. I recommend the podcast; "Apollo 11 What We Saw" for the actual story free of biased, divisive narratives. PBS' motivation for this narrative is clear: Every achievement of western civilization before now is the product of slave owners or racists and the evil patriarchy. They want to literally rewrite history simply out of hatred for white people. These people should really travel more. They would quickly find out how racist, misogynistic, and homophobic almost every other country in the world is compared to the USA. We are the most progressive civilization in known history. These people are just IGNORANT.

@@freedomsound4469 == Thanks for the 'heads up', I want to follow up on that National Peoples Republic Radio program, do you recall its name? You're exactly right -- it' a deceitful 'smear NASA' campaign to diminish the luster of the Apollo-11 celebrations.

@@freedomsound4469 and to add to the despicablness .. We the taxpayers pay for pms pbs brain washing machine!now they have women taking up space on our payroll in mission control for the next moon mission that will be privately funded by virgin, Bezos,elon musk...mission control women? In what capacity!!!? What a joke! This is what this great nation has come to equal equality bc of race or gender regardless if there qualified over white men..I want to see a physics,engineers and mathematics test given across the board bfr they get these free hand out positions in our space programs!

WE KNEW WHO ARE REAL ENEMIES WERE, RUSSIA AND CHINA AND IT WAS OPENLY TALKED ABOUT IN THE PUBLIC, NOW WITH THIS ""HIDE YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND" BUNCH AROUND US AMERICAN EXPERIENCE WILL NEVER BE ALLOWED TO PROVIDE INTERESTING MATERIAL. I USED TO GO OUT OF MY WAY TO WATCH PBS AND AMERICAN EXPERIENCE VIDEOS BUT THIS THREE PART ENTRY IS JUST PURE CRAP. 8:55 O I think Everywhere the Intellectuals have to be more or less carefull, these days on some topics. Lots of deadly accidents happen to those not in line.... If there is one moment in this damning post Apollo 11 Press Conference video that draws people’s attention, it’s @ and specifically Neil Armstrong’s reaction to a question that has no meaningful answer, its just a load of useless "hippy nonsense" : “What does this mean for the human race?” To which the only true answer would be ...nothing, on a global scale nothing at all! Did going to the moon suddenly bring an end to man’s inhumanity to man? An end to the war in Vietnam? Sweep aside racial inequality? How would a pilot answer that question? It’s a question better directed to a politician to put some kind of positive spin on it. Only the young college hippies cared of the Human worth of such a expensive dangerous undertaking. But like the so many starving, such Losers have no importance in modern civilised Societies showing off its.... big rockets.

@@shoh95 Admitting is good, rare, Most know and understand everything. Actually I am quoting a Antagonist Apollo shill, I agree on. As their superstar SG Collins said it was a political dickwagon race. Humans... I dont know, USA first was to invade /bomb Combodia no? Wasnt TECHNOLOGY advancing before that? It had stopped??? Those old 25 Billion$ would have help to advance many Technologies. So plenty of meaningfuls aside nothings as feeding the starving humans, what pray would not exist? Hum they did a lot of analyzing for the Vietnam war, doesnt seem to have made a difference. The hippies took to the streets, some tried to live differently, was a important advancement against racism in USA. Yes yes that is why People revolt and the Government does everything to quail them down. And Dear MERCURY GEMINI APOLLO USA project was NOT a Mankind advanture, was theirs with lots of help of Nazis, and cooperation of their British Lords.
